I mean Jordan would go out to dinner with guys like Barkley right before kicking their ass on the court. He had no problem being your friend and then turning off that friendship and being 100% full competitive mode once on the court. It was the coaches, like Barkley's coach at the time, forbidding him from eating out with Jordan or anyone else they were playing against, saying "no fraternizing with the enemy." So yea, that attitude existed back then, but it seemed more the coaches that wanted to force that type of mentality than all of the players. Sure, some players wanted it that way too, but it seemed like the reason that era was like that (aside from the different rules to the game itself) was the coaches forcing that type of air to the situation.

So instead of keeping it quiet like he did in the past, he sent a message from the beginning; to Detroit and also his teammates. This year would be a different story.
Jordan's attitude towards his enemies and teamm8s is part of the reason why they went down as the greatest NBA team of all time. He really pushed people to become better than ever before.
What I love most about this game is that even though it wasn’t a strong game overall for Jordan, he started it off so fiercely and boldly, keeping the Pistons so off-balance and on the ropes, that the rest of Bulls were inspired to follow suit. Especially Pippen, who was an absolute gunfighter in the 3rd quarter, and the bench, who definitely weren’t playing scared as they had in the past. My favorite moment is Hodges’ key three-pointer to put the Bulls up by 9 in the 4th quarter. The crowd just goes bananas; there was no doubt from that point on that the Bulls could take anything the Pistons threw at them.

The only difference is there is greater cultural concentration on weight training but plenty of athletes in MJ's day lifted. Still, it's not teams pushing this - it's up to individual players during the off season to develop physically and in terms of skills. Go look at players on teams today from top to bottom - sorry but not everybody is built like LBJ. Furthermore, the leagues is littered with 18-20 year olds that are puny and there are too many little guards today - the NBA is smaller than it's been since the 60's. But this is largely irrelevant. Today's players have the luxury of using athleticism because of the space they have whereas in the past, you could not drive a crowded middle and you could not jump over 7 footers. What is relevant are the on court conditions and it is simply so much easier to score today. There is a reason why scoring increased dramatically in the '04 - '05 season - rule changes and changes in foul interpretations. This isn't debatable - it's documented even on the NBA website.
Back then teams didnt play good schematic numbers type practiced defense....teams would just hit you and hand check and didnt bother ....defenses now a days are way more advanced with stats and information and ways of figuring out where a player doesn't want to shoot it from cause he is poor from there
And there are some people who call this as not being "physical" lmao....For all of you fans who don't think this is physical, you do know that some of the fouls occurred here would be ejections and suspensions today?
+Abel Mehari Aguirre acting though, he even shove down the already floored Pippen. Lost some sense of self-esteem after being shut out in this series of plays.
Mark "Donuts" Aguirre gets rejected twice on the play. Lard boy. Bulls D was their key to success. When they picked up Harp and Rodman for last three rings, the D went up a couple more notches.
The bottom line is the Bulls beat the Pistons and it was legit. The Bulls finally found a way to get everyone involved with the triangle offense while using Mike strategically instead of wastefully. They grew to be a monster of a defensive team and mentally was no longer afraid of the Pistons. That is why they won; no conspiracy. Your theory is an entertaining mix of your opinion along with facts born out of situations that had nothing to do with the playoffs, i.e. the dream team practice.
i hate to say this but as much as i hate the pistons bad boys and the way they played the game but without these bad boy piston i am pretty sure the bulls don't pull off 6 championships in 8 years. Jordan and Pippen really learned and understood both physical and mental strength through these years and filtered out through the team so just like jordan said in his HOF speech I like to thank those bad boy pistons for throwing that long on the fire for them and i'm glad the pistons walked off the way they did there true colors came out and showed just how unprofessional they were with the exception of John Salley and i think James Edwards
John Salley, James Edwards, Joe Dumars, Chuck Daly (of course), & some pine riders shook the Bulls hand. The rest of the ream followed Laimbeer & Isiah past the Bulls bench denying them the respect they earned.
The Bulls were out for blood. They didn’t just want to win the series, they wanted to literally destroy the bad boy Pistons team into absolute irrelevancy. And they succeeded in doing so. Isaiah and the boys never made noise again.
I said the same thing on another post …. Cause isiah said that Jordan wasn’t competition to him…lol…as soon as Jordan toughened his teammates up from getting bullied they simply dominated the pistons. Never to relevant again.
...from a Huge Pistons Fan...they went HARD in this era. This was a battle. Mike & Scottie had a personal block party at the 6:09 mark...at Mark Aquire's expense. Damn, Homie.
Jordan went to the gym and worked on his game gain muscle over the off-season after the 89-90 season LeBron after the losing to an older Celtics team ran to Miami and team up with with other super stars
rofl first comment and nice vid... MJ, the reason why he is so great is because he can perform on call. even if his shot is not falling he see's his teammates and that way he can be effective. Thing about MJ is that he is undisputedly the best while there are great players that are on par with eachother
I could give a pretty good argument that if the NBA had not allowed the Pistons to smash MJ and Pippen, the Pistons would have not won their two championships.
It's no argument needed. You're simply stating facts. 1989 Pistons in 6. 1990 Pistons in 7. Jordan should have 8 titles, but not because of the two years he retired in 93-95.
Ulysses432, you talk about game 7, but what about games 1-6? Pippen was there. They lost. The entire league played that way. The Knicks played that style, but they couldn’t beat CHI. Please, don’t discredit DET. In 1991, DET lost, no excuse. Jordan can’t win all the time.
It only became a thing bc jordan and Jackson cried so much about it in the media. That's the game was played before then. It used to be a physical real stat game. It didn't bother jordan so much when 3 of these pistons were playing w him for that 2nd 3peat. Cry baby.
These were games, the crowd, the defense, no bullish calls, trash talking, the intimidation factor, the rough play, I would love to see today's star go through this!
@@philcrenshaw2465 Yes I remember when they were around from 88 to 91. They got it for their rough play in 87 and If I remember Jordan got his first MVP around that time and his 3rd or 4th scoring title. Even Mark Aguirre said that Jordan was the best in the league but he needed help.
I remember this. Chicago played very wise in this series. They never let the Pistons bully them. Yet they picked fights, they did not let Detroit's cheap shots affect their game. The Pistins lost miserably because they could no longer bully their way to victory. The Bulls exposed them and that was why this is the beginning of the end of the Bad Boys.
That foul by Laimbeer at 1:25 shows how good a player he really was. That was a smart play, and a difficult one to make. Jordan quickly shifted his drive down the court so that he had Bill turned around, yet Laimbeer went up at the right time and still was able to get a body on MJ, preventing the easy bucket. And he did it in clean fashion, which he didn't always do. LOL
It was the triangle offense Phil Jackson installed. By preventing the Pistons from easily double teaming Jordan, combined with the league changing the flagrant fouls rules in 1991, Jackson was finally able to get the Bulls over the hump. Doug Collins swung players to one side of the floor to give Jordan space to work with, but the triangle is what gave Jordan the easy out (pass to Pippen or a spot up shooter like Paxon) when double teamed. If the Pistons had been able to run zone defense like the teams do today (anything but man to man was illegal defense at this time), the Bulls likely wouldn't have made it to the Finals until after Isiah retired. Jordan wouldn't have been able to make it into the lane as easily. See the New York Knicks during the Phil Jackson era if you want to see that proof of concept in action.
The bulls swept 2 time defending champion Detroit who won the east 3 years in a row and were in their 5th straight conference finals and could have won 3 straight titles bested la 4-1 a team that had been to 4 of the last 5 finals and won 2 before Detroit and were in 10 straight conference finals and 8 finals in those years and 11 conference finals and 9 finals winning 5 of them in 12 years..they were better at this point...they went 8-1 lol...5-0 on the road...
Well, 1990 and 1991 were the first years the Bulls and Pistons could be looked at as equals. Prior to that, Jordan was waiting for Pippen and Grant to develop while the Pistons were already a championship-caliber team. One thing is for sure, it was one hell of a rivalry.
Because what he doesn't seem to understand is this: Michael Jordan, once he took the punishment the Pistons gave him, became even stronger and, in this case, unstoppable. The Jordan Rules did not so much knock him down as they forced him to grow up. A painful process, yes, but it taught him to trust his teammates, to play even tougher and smarter basketball. The Pistons' 'job' was to prevent him from winning games, but they could not sweep him in a single series or keep him away from a title.
Pippen waived off someone? That's disrespectful, that someone was John Paxson. The man who would later in the finals shoot down the Lakers! That same John Paxson would hit the "Shot" that put an end to the Phoenix Suns in the finals
James Speller wtf are you talking about?? john paxson was a one dimensional player. a spot up shooter that’s all. you stupid if you think he would have made that DEFENSIVE stop.. Pip was right to waive him off and i’m sure pax would agree
You can say that the pistons made Jordan better. The "Jordan Rules" made Michael Jordan use his teammates more, pass more. It also made Pippen better, he became more mature and more focused. The rest of the Bulls were inspired to play better they gained the confedence to win.
Jordan played among the all time greats, which set the stage for him to be named the greatest of all time. I cannot fathom how anyone can say that Kobe Bryant is on the same level. Kobe is just another imitation, he owes his entire game to Jordan.
I was at the 1990 game 6 home game where the bulls won to push it back to Detroit For a game 7 and we went on to lose it. The Game 6 Night of which I was there for was mini-bull horn night. So, Im up in the rafters and I was yelling to my dad sitting right next to me with it and he still couldn't hear me say I need to go to the bathroom. That place was so loud. The loudest sporting event I have ever been to, to this day.
This was classic true basketball. They let these play. Mike was task talking, Scottie was trash talking, and so was Rodman and Aguirre. Let them talk, let them play, and let the best team win
I don't care what anyone says. The Pistons were the dirtiest, nastiest, most classless and for me any way, least respected NBA champions ever. They could not win without being nasty. On top of that, they whined and cried whenever someone retaliated and whenever they lost (walking off the court without congratulating the Bulls when losing this series). And what is worse is looking at the Bad Boys documentary and Open Court on NBA TV and hearing Isiah make up these lame reasons for why they didn't congratulate the Bulls and complain about the fallout from how they played the game. At least some of them own what they were and you can some what respect that. But overall as a fan of the game, I have very little respect for their titles.
+Iceburgg Slimm I actually hated Isiah as a player but I love him on open court. A lot of the things he says is correct. He can just be brutually honest. I respect him as a player but he went out like a bitch when they got swept and that should and will forever be apart of his legacy.
No lies..the Pistons were just court yard thugs who kept beating people down physically. The way they crumbled after being swept is testament to your position
Isiah never had any class to begin with...was extremely jealous of Jordan all his career...and more bitter given how MJ took Chicago from him...he wants to feel like the victim in the no handshake controversy that led to him excluded from Barcelona...but he forgot the years of conduct that alienated him from even his peers...Chuck Daly couldnt even stand up for him being included in the Dream team..as a player, I do respect his contribution to the game, but he is really a two-faced person who smiles at your face and knifes you while you're not looking...

Everytime I see a Knicks game these days I'm wondering how Isiah can stay that calm on the bench. It's like the Knicks of today are the antithesis of his old Pistons team. It boggles the mind, with the knowledge, experience on a championship team, how can you assemble a squad like that? I think part of his pleasure in beating the Bulls comes with his background as a native of Chicago and the fact that Jordan in a way took his place when he entered the league.
The Pistons were slower.. but they werent injured. Only Thomas, who was recovering from one. And both teams had almost the same age. Dummars, Sally, Isiah, all under 30.. as Jordan, Pippen etc. The oldest players were Lambeer with 33 and Cartwright 33.
This video saddens me ... it was the beginning of the end of Isaiah and the Bad Boys era... as being dominant and the only team to consistently contain Jordan. They never get enough credit they were nasty physical and I miss this type of NBA. I can barley watch today’s NBA because it’s that bad.
In the 90's only team that had won a championship from the west was rockets and spurs. During 2000's from the east are pistons, boston and heat. During 2010's 3 championship teams from the east (miami, cavs & raptors) and 4 from the west (dallas, spurs, warriors & lakers) Teams are so skilled and more stacked nowadays compared to the old days!
Don't you miss the days when teams had real animosity towards each other?

And there are some people who call this as not being "physical" lmao....For all of you fans who don't think this is physical, you do know that some of the fouls occurred here would be ejections and suspensions today?
Well the 1989,1990 series say otherwise.
Pistons were physical and a force both at offense and defense.
You can't even trash talk today. Bunch of female genitalias
Stop regurgitating popular rhetoric. Thus was not "physical".
almost forgot how fucking good Jordan was..... damn!
Indeed this was a statement!! This was the beginning of the end of the Bad Boy Pistons!! As lifelong BULLS fans we still relish this!!
Check out the defense the Bulls played through the sequence (6:05-6:36)
+Abel Mehari Aguirre acting though, he even shove down the already floored Pippen. Lost some sense of self-esteem after being shut out in this series of plays.
See a goal tending by Scottie Pippen to start it off.
Mark "Donuts" Aguirre gets rejected twice on the play. Lard boy. Bulls D was their key to success. When they picked up Harp and Rodman for last three rings, the D went up a couple more notches.
Bulls got away with two no-calls on defense. Tell me 6:14 wasn't a foul.
@@greatestmedical you're an idiot
Why do we even question Jordan? Even if you’re a LeBron fan? We will never see another Michael Jordan...
Because hate is blinding. People see what they want to see.
We hate you too
Without these Pistons, the Bulls don't make it past the Knicks in 92...
Remember watching this game, bulls got on a roll, and never looked back.
Michael Jordan was the 5-time league MVP,who was being held 22 pts,9 pts below his playoff avg, but getting his teammates involved against the Pistons
What a wonderful high-pitched ringing noise. It really enhances the audio experience.
Jeez pippin was so smooth when he was on
OMG! What a game, what a defence and emotions. Greate!
Jordan went to the gym and worked on his game gain muscle over the off-season after the 89-90 season LeBron after the losing to an older Celtics team ran to Miami and team up with with other super stars
I love Watching the Bulls Play, But I'll always be a Pistons Fan :)
rofl first comment and nice vid...
Nah they were the better team till 91
@@bwade5544 indeed...in those two years the pistons were champs, the Bulls gave them their toughest challenges in 89 and 90...
MICHAEL JORDAN AND THE BULLS ARE THE CHAMPIONS IN 1991!!! JORDAN IS THE BEST!!!
The bad boy's made Jordan
@@philcrenshaw2465 No Jordan was an MVP winning player before the bad boys.
@@donnelladams340 do you know when the bad boy's was around
@Greg Hubbard really you must be a bull's fan
@@philcrenshaw2465 Yes I remember when they were around from 88 to 91. They got it for their rough play in 87 and If I remember Jordan got his first MVP around that time and his 3rd or 4th scoring title. Even Mark Aguirre said that Jordan was the best in the league but he needed help.
It was so nice watching 🏀 in the 90s when most players weren't covered in tattoos.
These are some of the best games of all time
Highlight play after highlight play after highlight play.Real baller's from back in the day.
LOL
I used to watch sports. And I still watch these games. What I won't watch is anything endorsing Queen James
By this point, 1991, Mike flat out kicked Detroit's ass. They knew it and he knew it.
Im from detroit, i also thought the bulls were the better team that year.
+jaboo82681 I actually looked that game up. February 7, 1991 at the Palace
@Ulysses432 actually they did fam they went to the ECF 87,88,89,90, & 91 and They Won The ECF 88,89, & 90
@Ulysses432 I said Jackson installed the triangle offense. I never claimed he invented it...
What a great game. Thank you!
This is the epitome of great basketball
Well, 1990 and 1991 were the first years the Bulls and Pistons could be looked at as equals. Prior to that, Jordan was waiting for Pippen and Grant to develop while the Pistons were already a championship-caliber team.
One thing is for sure, it was one hell of a rivalry.
It was a one sided rivalry for sure in favor of the DETROIT PISTONS.
@@realone7405Then Detroit got spanked and where never heard from again.
Put This Game On NBA TV Hardwood Classic On TV
Detroits game plan was just to agitate and distract jordan. But the bulls are so physically strong and focus during that season
Dennis Hopkin,Cliff Levingston and the Rookie Scott Williams we're added in the off-season to revamp the Bulls?
And a historic one too. It had great ramifications for both teams and the NBA.
Thank God for digital this was like watching the game with a blindfold on
Because what he doesn't seem to understand is this:
Michael Jordan, once he took the punishment the Pistons gave him, became even stronger and, in this case, unstoppable.
Back when players didnt jump ship on they team. And join their competion.
MJ said I'm tired of you kicking my a.. Not this year. Great series, great rivalry when defense could've played, unlike in today's game!!!
Isiah got dunked on.. and is speechless.
His face...... Priceless.
Wow I can’t believe a tape exists of Jordan having an off game. The media would have you think he was perfect and won rings every season
I know right.
Jordan was always competitive but he was homicidal this year to beat the pistons.
Scottie's block on Aguire may be the greatest defensive effort I've ever seen.
4:16 Rodman looking like “I’m gonna be your teammate one day” 🤣
6:07 pippen waives off someone and called out his own block three paces behind aguire .. damn he was so dominant defensively.
The rest of the Bulls were inspired to play better they gained the confedence to win.
laimbeer secretly watching this vid:
"should've shook those damn hands"
Laimbeer would never say that
When Chicago won game 1 of the '91 ecf. I expected it that they will close out Detroit quickly. And it showed.
1:27 Lamebeer looks so sad trying to keep up with Mike 😩😩🤣🤣
Jordan was the man from day 1. and never fell off
This was the most intense I've seen MJ in a game. He was trash talking all game, they finally owned the Pistons. The beginning of a SWEEP.
Jordan played among the all time greats, which set the stage for him to be named the greatest of all time. I cannot fathom how anyone can say that Kobe Bryant is on the same level. Kobe is just another imitation, he owes his entire game to Jordan.
wow, that block from Pip, 6:42
It still feels like the Bulls should’ve had the Pistons number a year earlier in 1990. Because by ‘91, Detroit didn’t stand a chance.
Nah, Pistons still won more games in '90, and no team lost at home, so home court advantage was the deciding factor.
Facts. If the flagrant 2 rule existed back then, the bad boy Pistons team would not have a single ring.
@@nnamdionyido4885 can’t believe ur name is Nnamdi what pathetic take saying u don’t respect what Isaiah brought to the game of basketball u need to be tested cause I don’t know what drug u on bro
12 and 28 against the Pistons going into this series, wow. Detroit had their number for a long time.
The Bulls made the right adjustments to take the next step towards the NBA FINALS. Detroit was still an awesome team
But no matter what the Pistons tried, there was just no stopping the airness and the bulls?
cant believe you are still around. i admire your loyalty. i think detriot had enough rings. they won two and they almost wanted to quit playing basketball, what a boring game for them.haha
In this era.... in heated playoff series' like these....you put your life on the line taking the ball to the basket.
Umm, I think that you are over exaggerating.
yea i have heard that thing since i start watching nba from 91...they always said that the games were fixed and all that..
but one thing i know for sure is, jordan is pure goodness on the basketball court,he played hard every night and he was way more entertaining to watch than any other nba player from the past to now.
@norsemustang not just the NBA bro but music, the NFL, EVERYTHING
These Bulls beat my Lakers in the finals but man they were fun to watch.
In 1991, Chicago Bulls we're athletic, stronger, quicker and younger than the injury-ridden slower Pistons
LMAO at 6:18 Aguirre pushes Pippen back down right in front of the referee. Gotta love 90s basketball
How cool is that MJ-tap on Rodman after there little conversation !!! Class !!!!
*sigh*, im biased as a native Chicagoan but THIS was playoff basketball!!!
In the 90's only team that had won a championship from the west was rockets and spurs. During 2000's from the east are pistons, boston and heat. During 2010's 3 championship teams from the east (miami, cavs & raptors) and 4 from the west (dallas, spurs, warriors & lakers)
Teams are so skilled and more stacked nowadays compared to the old days!
dam, that's an intense game
This kind of basketball so fun to watch
@norsemustang truer words could not be spoken....there's no replacing the NBA ON NBC!!! I only watch old games!!!
