Back when this episode aired you couldn’t go anywhere without people talking about this episode I just remember this episode having such a huge impact on people I was in 9th grade at the time (now graduated oh how time flies) and I just remember hearing for an entire week about how Hershel was dead I had no clue on how the show would have a huge impact on all of us at the time.
Rip Hershel, Judith, The Governor, Julio at 11:24 and 11:27, Lilly and Meghan who died in this episode, Julio was a newcomer of the prison group, he been a background character, but in this episode he died defending the prison, The Governor is dead, Andrea, Merle, Hershel, Axel, Oscar, Martinez, Shumpert, Milton and Julio have been avenged, Rest In Peace Scott Wilson 1942-2018 who played Hershel, he died on October 6 2018 from leukemia at the age of 76
I was DEVASTATED when this aired. Maggie screaming at the fence always got me the worst. Then Hershel trying to crawl away 😭 TWD traumatized us at Christmas. And killed Santa ☹️
I began watching this show, fully, from this episode. When this part of the season ended, i began watching repeats from the beginning, till i caught up with new eps. Then ...
Literally one of the best episodes of the series still to this day Carl & Rick’s performance at the end of the episode when they realize Judith was eaten right out of her car seat STILL gives me chills to this day I’m so excited for you guys to continue this show I feel so bad for everyone but Carl especially because he tried warning Rick about the Governor & told Daryl he had a shot & they just lost everything Within a couple months he lost his uncle Shane had to put the Walker one down after Rick killed him lost his Mom Lori & had to put her down & now lost the prison and nearly everyone there😭
Comic Comparisons : in the comics It’s Tyreese who gets decapitated his comic counterpart is actually introduced much earlier than in the show before they get to the farm the battle for the prison goes down a bit different The Governor is presumed dead for a while before he randomly shows up at the prison gates It should be noted that the Governor never kills all of his people or burns down Woodbury so he still had an army with him him becoming Brian Heriot is completely unique to the show I can’t remember exactly but I think their first attack failed Nonetheless they eventually bust through and kill a lot of people Hershel does die in this battle in the comics but not in the same way He begs to be killed after his son is shot right in front of him and the Governor grants him that Rick tries to escape with Lori and Judith but Lori who is carrying Judith is shot and falls to the ground killing both her and the baby after the Governor successfully wins the prison Lily who was already a member of Woodbury and dealt the killing shot on Lori realizes she also killed a baby and gets mad at the Governor when the Governor shows no remorse she shoots him dead in the head after that nothing more is said about the Woodbury group.
Remember this was on tv.. it was probably an episode that aired before the holidays… you know when they play something before thanksgiving and come back in January. I can see that happening.
It's the mid-season finale. They tend to be bold end or build anticipation for the remainder of the season. But there are also times when the story disrupts those story expectations.
R.I.P to Hershel great character who brought so much love his theme song R.I.P to the actor Scott Wilson who played this character and who sadly passed away from Leukemia 6 years ago Oct 6 2018 Age 76 He was the ultimate voice of reason right next to Dale and R.I.P to the Governor as well who was a great villain and did a great job at making us hate him great work by David Morrissey portraying this character.
I feel like Megan's mom (I keep forgetting her name) was actually TRYING to protect her daughter. She kept seeing walkers approaching from the other side of the river, and was afraid eventually one of them would get across...they kept getting swept away by the water, but it was enough to keep her unnerved and afraid and looking THAT direction, thinking her daughter was safe digging in the mud, playing around. I don't think she was being careless or not trying to protect her daughter. :( I think it was symbolic of her being afraid of threats from the wrong direction, while the REAL danger was much closer to home - "Brian". This episode is one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the whole show. I love how you noticed the look Herschel gave Rick- how proud he was of him!
They got a tank because I’m pretty sure the two guys that were with Martinez the bald guy and the other dude Phillip killed were in the military so they had the tank
In the comics, this battle killed LOADS of Ricks Group. After his first assault on the prison failed, Dale Horvath challenged Rick's leadership and took half the group away from the prison, including Glenn, Maggie, Andrea, Sophia, and the kids. Michonne and Tyreese went after The Governor and got captured. So Rick, Lori, Judith, Carl, Hershel, Patricia, Axel, and a few comic only characters all were ambushed on the Governor's 2nd assault, which resulted in the deaths of EVERYONE BUT Rick, Carl, and Michonne. This should have happened at the end of the previous season, but Glen Mazarra, the showrunner, wanted to abandon the comics lol so Scott Gimple course corrected.
I just wanted to point out that daryl chose to shoot the guy from the tank in the heart rather than the head...specifically so he would turn. He did not want to save that man from the fate of becoming a walker.
When they killed off Judith I was angry it was offscreen but then I was also grateful. I wouldn’t have wanted to see any part of that baby getting torn up! 😢😢🤷🏾♂️👍🏾✌🏾
Yes Hershel smiled and was proud of Rick telling the Governor/Phillip, NOT "Brian" (whose name he got off the wall outside before finding Lilly, Tamara, Meghan & Graddad David in the apartment block), that they could all get along and share the prison and live together, then when he went on to say to the Governor "we've all done the worst kind of things just to stay alive, but we can still come back, we're not too far gone", they the writers/producers say Hershel smiles knowing that Rick has found what he lost. I was so so glad Michonne put her sword through the Philip, but he's a big guy and brutally beat Rick nearly choking him to death, so thankfully Michonne turning up on time and putting her Katana blade through his chest impaling him from behind was like YAAAYYY! I felt your anger Jannell when you said you were so ANGRY after seeing what the Governor did to Hershel, I remember on my first watch with my watch friend, we screamed at the tv and were enraged and crying. Thank goodness for Carol , she taught them kids good and put that fighting spirit in them, Lizzie & Mika shooting after Alisha and one of theirs soldiers was a total surprise and unexpected, the shoick on Alisha's face was gold, we were happy. That shot to Alisha's forehead was definitely from Lizzie, did you see the anger in her face and eyes, Lizzie wasn't ramping? Good old Daryl being Daryl using that walker that neartly bit him like a shield from the bullets, then putting a hand grenade down the cannon barrel of the tank from the enemies camp was brilliant, straight from a war film. That ending in the courtyard with Rick & Carl crying over Judith's bloody empty baby car seat carrier had us crying too. I agree, I wanted to see Philip suffer and the walkers get him, but his woman Lilly ended him, just the way he put her daughter down, coldly - he was a wicked, manipulative, sick and psychotic man. Sadly the group is now separated and the bus sped off - what now??? RIP Hershel!
Maggie and Beth have been through SO much already, but watching their dad get brutally murdered in front of their eyes is probably the worst 🥲
Indeed.
Been dreading this one. Y'all are awesome👍.

This was the mid season finale before the Christmas break! I remember swearing at the TV! Merry Freaking Christmas!
Oh see I just commented that. I figured it was a mid season episode
8:44 you can tell Hershel was happy with the person Rick has become he was willing to work with others but willing to defend their group when needed
When Carl was crying about his sister that got too me especially after Hershel.

The TWD theme is always a great background after a great dramatic opening scene It just adds so much dramatic tension imo.

This episode was heartbreaking. I remember my brother screamed HERSHEL!!! in the other room when it happened.
RIP Hershel.
I watched this show from the very first season episode 1 to the very last episode 11 years later. I absolutely loved it!

Big episodes are usually E1(Premiere),E8(Mid-season Finale),E9(Mid-season Premiere) & E16(Finale)
Good to know. Thanks.
12:45 Michonne wanted to let Rick get his a*$ whooped for a few minutes,
for sending her/Merle to the governor...
that's what i take from it.... lol
No way. She wasn't even mad about that, lol.
@kimberlywilmoth9184 it's a joke...lol.
I'm sure you know that.
@@MGillDesignI also thought you meant it, Mabye it was the way you worded it but glad you were just joking 😂

Rick's speech in this episode still moves me til this day
Probably my favorite episode in the series, or atleast season 4 for sure

Great point. 😊
i was waiting for this episode its so amazing
Also confirmed that the bullet that hits the Governor was fired by Carl. People always underestimate him. He’s a child but he’s got a strength in him!
This is a mid-season finale...all episode 8's are mid finales and 9's are mid-season premieres 😊
They got a tank because I’m pretty sure the two guys that were with Martinez the bald guy and the other dude Phillip killed were in the military so they had the tank
Devastating to lose our wise and loving elder Hershel. Great reaction guys!
