How I Saved My Dying Alocasia Silver Dragon Scale | REPOTTED IN PERLITE!

  • When I started to notice my Dragon Scale not doing so well, I removed it from the soil and repotted it into straight perlite with huge success. This is the method I decided to try with my plant, but I am not an expert. Thanks for watching my videos and I hope you can learn from my channel.

    I bought a Alocasia Silver Dragon from a street station and I let it rest for a week. The plant was in good shape and had a little "nub" of new growth. During the week was no action of further growth. I transplanted it in just perlite alone and by gosh this plant is thriving and the nub has grown and the leaf is about to emerge after only three days. I now have planted most of my plants in perlite and they are thriving. WONDERFUL

    mine came in what looks like all peat as it is very loose and some perlite . WOW glad I bought bags of perlite at the flea market for a 1 bag for big huge bags of it . 20 bags of it . I put some in my veggie garden and my veggies are growing like crazy . I am amazed at how well the veggie garden is doing . I am on a well for my house and I let my whole house water filter back flush into my veggie garden for water . I also use some of my koi pond water and start plants in my koi pond stock tank filters .Fish waste really does grow plants .

    Good video. I will try the Perlite tip. As for the “Corms” from the plants, place them with the tips down in the substrate. The long end is what comes from the plant. I have a Platinum that has gone into transportation shock. The leaves have rolled together and it looks sad. I will try using the perlite to induce more root growth. Maybe that will work?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the reason why perlite has worked so well for me so far is the roots have a ton of airflow, which the plant just loves.

  • @Vicious_Virgo
    @Vicious_Virgo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Hi! I know you’re not an expert but I had the same thing happen to my dragon scale that was shipped cross country for like 5-6 days but I caught it a bit earlier when the soil wouldn’t dry out after the first week or so and it had some root rot. So 2-3 days ago I removed maybe 10-15% of the root system but it still had a ton of healthy roots so I put it in perlite for recovery after cleaning them (similar container w drainage, keeping moist @ 3-7 on probe meter). I removed one new leaf that never uncurled and was white/yellow inside. But my leaves just keep curling under more and more every day and seem to slowly be getting worse & still drooping, I have maybe 2 healthy leaves of 6 that haven’t curled yet. It’s got great indirect light+grow lights. Also there’s some fine white powder topside of some leaves in vein crevices which I don’t think is fungus or pests; could it be from humidifier? Or misting leaves w water, or the perlite? I only use filtered water from fridge & haven’t fertilized or anything. Will the damaged leaves ever recover or eventually die? I forgot to harvest some tubers for insurance but will do that when I pot it if it ever recovers… any advice? Should I pot it or just give it some more time? Somewhat new to alocasia/all this and can’t find some of this info online. Thank you!

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It most likely is in shock like mine was. I lost a couple leaves as well. I always try and remember that the root system that was there initially was supporting its current leaf count, but when you remove that much of the roots be prepared for the decline of some leaves until the plant re establishes new roots. I think jist be patient and if it continues to decline remove it from the perlite and check out the roots again. Root rot is a fungus and if it isn't removed or cleaned my understanding is that it may continue to rot. Does that help?

      @@EverythingPlants Hi! Im so sorry for the late reply lol - I did end up putting it in perlite and its still there lol - I'm terrified to move it to soil it seems to be doing really well where it is, it sprouted 2 new leaves and a bloom, so not necessarily thriving but.... got some GREAT roots rn!!!! It held onto its 3 remaining og leaves for a really long time, 1 left rn. I tried to give it a tiny fraction of fertilizer a few times and it burned it as well as my other plants (thats w. diluting it to like 10% rec dose).. I'm not sure if Im using the wrong kind of fertilizer or what. i've tried schultz, tropical fert, noot (unaware of controversy...), no good exp w. fert (airplant fert even burns my tillys w. super diluted doses)
      and I spent so much time & money making my own aroid mix (coir, bark, perlite, leca, charcoal: 25%,30,30,10,4) layered/mixed and all the chunky amendments floated to the top and the coir/perlite went to the bottom and stayed WET and pretty much killed my plants with root rot, or they were barely alive in it, so now I'm struggling to start over w. my zebrina reticulata & frydek by bulbs in water, and split my monstera d. trying to reroot in water too...so some bad luck. My alocasia verigata is down to small bulb, on top of perlite and doing good (2 gorgeous baby leaves) Killed my monstera albo wet stick w. root rot.... uggh lol, so expensive... even struggling w. my fiddle leaf :(
      I heard all chunk (orchid bark, perlite, leca, with maybe a 10-20%/handful of quality soil is a good way to go? But rehabing in perlite has been a good method for me. Im even thinking of switching just to leca, but the fert thing scares me. I got some hydro fert might try that... i switched most everything else over to a few chunkies + indoor plant miracle grow & worm castings as a top dressing. Things seem to be doing better. I like the worm castings for soil plants as I heard they're a more mild way to provide nutes. If I use miracle grow I get fungus gnats, so treat it first. I swear the best soil I had I used years ago w. my original thriving cheap home depot houseplants was just cheap stuff/random bulk brand I found at target (also came w. f.gnats but no longer avail). These tropicals can be so finicky!
      I don't know what to do w. my ritculata bulb tho bc it seems to be trying to sprout a bunch of leaves/stems in the water, should I keep it in the water or try it in perlite? Last time I took it out of water the roots it had grown dried up lol - or maybe half out of water so it has some oxygen? Can't seem to get any of my corm that I harvested to sprout either, (seem to be rotting) but had good luck w. others just on top of perlite in my pothos cuttings garden - tried them there, tried closed perlite container, half in water etc.
      sorry so long! just felt like venting/frustrated lol

    Another question. My silver dragon looks similar to what yours did, but I imported it and the roots are in healthy shape producing bulbs. 6 to say the least. The pot I had it in was def too big for it. So I’m assuming overwatering was a problem, which is maybe why it stopped producing leaves for me?. Anyway. I replanted it in a small nursery container contains strictly perlite. But if it’s been over watered. Should I let it sit in the dry perlite for a day or two? Or should I still moisturize the pot with water?

    Hi, thank you for the video. My dragon was looking the same after shipment. I took a look at the roots and most of them were rotten but thankfully it had a few white roots near the bulb that looked ok. I snipped the rotten ones and put in pearlite. I also found a small bulb and I made a little prop box for it too.
    My question is: How long did it take for roots to start growing for them? I have them in a North facing room with lots of windows getting plenty of bright indirect light and they are also in an Ikea plant terrarium getting some artificial grow light and supplemental humidity.
    I am absolutely in love with my dragon scale and I really want it to thrive.

    I suspect people who promote the use of perlite have vested self interest. It’s a surplus by-product of the construction industry, and it’s useless as a gardening medium. Alocasias are endemic to tropical South-east Asia. They thrive on the forest floor where it’s humid and the natural substrate is decaying organic matter.
    Your Alocasia appears to be a victim of dehydration and low humidity. Report it in a medium of garden soil generously mixed with lawn mulch, crushed dead leaves, or even coconut husk. It’ll do wonders!
