This video needs an update: The Shure Aonic 50 received an update. They no longer need to have audiofiles downloaded on the app to apply the Equalizer to them. Now, you can use the eq for any audio you decide to play pretty much (even Spotify). The sound quality is way way way superior on the A50.

Hi Anu. Has there been an improvement in bass? And how is the mic quality for calls? Guess ANC is decent enough?

    • @anu.
      @anu. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@dudefromcbee You can change the bass to your liking in the app. I just don't like Sony's bass heavy sound. I prefer the clear sound that the Shure A50s give out. You have to turn off the LDAC to be able to activate the equalizer but that's not a problem. Yes, ANC has always been good. The sound quality is the best, however. Even with superior ANC the Sony can't beat the sound of the A50s and that should really tell you something... Mic quality is pretty good. I have never faced any problems with these headphones so far. The equalizer preset settings are really good too, better than Sony's imo... (I have Sony wf-1000xm4 too, I just go for these more often...)

@@anu. Thanks Anu for your response. Was totally confused between these two and the Bose. Lack of bass (subjective), ANC, mic quality was something I wasn't very sure because of the mixed feedback. BTW, how is the build quality? Hope the synthetic leather earpads are keeping up well...

@@anu. I had the Aonic 50s a while ago, really liked them, but knowing that the EQ works across any app is huge. So much so I picked them up again on ebay (they go under $200 all the time which is an incredible deal for what was once a $400 pair of headphones). I have currently a B&O Beoplay H95, which is the most expensive wireless headphone on the market, and while it's incredible and sounds amazing for everything, I do think these Shure Aonic 50s could come incredibly close to them, especially with an EQ that works, thus making the H95 simply a terrible value even if they're really nice. Could be hard to hold onto $800 headphones when $200 ones could sound 95% as good as them (not sure yet, if the H95 still sound noticeably better across most genres, I'll keep them). I also had the MW65 (originally $500 headphones, also go under $200 on ebay now) which I really liked, but I think the Shure has the MW65 beat by a bit, especially since the MW65 doesn't have any EQ abilities. Maybe the next Master & Dynamic premium flagship wireless headphones can retake the crown.

@@dudefromcbee Yes! The leather pads are still great and it's very humid and damp where I live! Stuff can be prone to mold here, especially headphones that can get sweaty if you wear them all day. I just make sure to keep a silica gel sachet in the case. I also don't store it in immediately after using if I can help it and when I can't then I wipe the sweat off. Just take care of them properly and they'll last you for a long time...

I am watching with the SHURE 50's! Depends on the sound you want! Wider soundstage, more vocal and mid presence then the Sony's. XM4's are bassier for sure. I bought these for at home wireless listening. Don't care about the other stuff, just wanted a good wireless set of cans for at home and the classy look of these over the Sony's I went with them and am so glad I did as the sound is exceptional listening to MQA files and HR files with Qualcomm Apt X HD through my Bluesound Node 2i. Go with the ones you personally like to look at better and the sound signature you think will suit you as either way you will not be disappointed. Ony other ones to consider in this range would be the Dali i0-4 no ANC or the i0-6 with ANC.

Have had both for over a week now and used both indoors and outdoors with cables and with only Bluetooth. Can safely say that aside from the fact that the Xm4s are lighter and more compact, the A50s are on a whole other level. The sound isn’t even comparable tbh, and I listen to every type of music imaginable and I find myself craving the sound of the A50s at half volume whereas the XM4s are just meh. If eq is a problem for you, if you have Amazon HD sub the android app has eq and it works great. Only really bumped the bass up slightly as I find everything else about the A50 sound is perfect.
Like honestly I don’t get the xm4 hype, for me it’s not even close...

Being one who listens primarily to classical, jazz, and acoustic music in general, I've been convinced by your review and others that the Shure are probably my best choice for audio quality. Availability of hi res streaming sources is another factor. This being music for quiet room or air travel listening, the frequency range of air conditioning and jet engine noise would be preferred for noise cancelling demonstration .. Good review.

The Shure Aonic 50 wins hands down. They have all the Bluetooth Codecs that you need and they are better built. To make the Sony's even come close to the sound of the Aonic 50...you need to play around with the EQ in the app. With the Aonic 50's you don't need to do that. As far as the ANC...they are both on par. The Son'y are only popular because of the ANC. I care more about NICE quality sound than ANC. And since the Aonic 50's have BOTH..it's a no brainer.

This is truly a well done presentation with a fine articulated balance between both headphones especially when it comes to sound performance. Too many other reviews focus on gadgetry and niceties omitting the sound production aspect in its entirety. In owning Sony's for many years, I have found their bass is overly saturated whereas higher end Sennheiser and Shure offer a more natural reproduction and present more precisely what the studio producer and engineer intended you to hear. I use a pair of Sennheiser HD600 which align with this statement.

I formerly owned the Sony WHXM4 and liked them very much. I had very few complaints. They were stolen and I replaced them with the Shure 50s. Both great phones, but the factor that I think puts the 50s in front of the Sony XM4s is when you connect directly to a more powerful source than a phone. This is when the Shure phones shine brighter. For all of their functions (BT/ANC/etc.), when powered by a solid amp, they are as good or better than many phones I’ve used that are dedicated studio phones. Well done, Shure!

These are great reviews! I like hearing them myself through your reviews. Sure, it would be great to try them on, but where? I agree with you, the Sony MX4 is the king of quiet. Also, I feel it is not only quieter than the competition, but on maximum NR the audio quality is indistinguishable from no NR. And, it truly is very light. I would suggest weighing the headphones to see if they match spec.

I don’t normally watch TH-cam reviews/instructions/etc (to me videos take too long to relay information, I prefer reading over watching), but I wanted to get a better sense of how the Shure’s look (when not photographed) & get a better idea as to how it’s controls/features are operated/work. 1st based on the samples you provide (very neat btw - I like how you managed to incorporate actual recordings of noise cancelation performance! As an FYI I would note that the method you use and (or?) the background track used doesn’t relay bass performance well/doesn’t seem to simulate much lower-end background noise - I think it would be helpful to call this out with some text on the screen, etc so that viewers understand where you’re opinion is coming from) your opinions/impressions seem to be right on the money. Better overall background noise attenuation on calls w/ the Shure’s, but they also muffle/fuzz your voice while the Sony’s let a small amount of ambient noise through, but your voice sounded better/probably makes voices easier to understand on calls (honestly sounds like the Sony’s first attenuate the signal and then build your voice back up. I wonder if any other sensors are used for this or if it’s just standard cQc from Qualcomm). And ditto with the noise cancelation, but I felt like the sample didn’t really have or couldn’t reproduce much/any low end noise; but I’ve heard that the low end ANC is indeed better on the Shure’s.
Some things I would like to see in the future though:
    1. (Only applies to the Aonic 50) An update regarding changes from the firmware. Apparently some significant changes have been made since the original version to sound/mic/anc performance.
    2. Some detail about the transparency mode (I believe there are different ‘levels’ to it?), it’s usability in real life (good enough to hear a car approaching when walking, make out what people are saying around you, good enough to be able to have a conversation with someone?).
    3. Are there any auto-pause features or quick ways to exchange brief words in person? To me this is one of the most important features with modern headphones, especially those with high level of noise suppression. I know the Sony’s have a plethora of features in this area & from the review it seems like the Shure’s have none, but believe this is important enough to be explicitly called out (as almost all headphones at the very least pause when you take them off)
    4. Bluetooth multipoint! The Shure’s have these & it would definitely be of interest to many people to let them know that they can connect to 2 devices at once.
    5. Wired use: the Shure’s can be used with a cord & no power, but it must be manually shut off. Also when the cable is inserted it disconnects any Bluetooth connections (and does the opposite when removed). The ANC can be used with the cord as mentioned, but I have read that there is some change to the sound signature?
    6. The app: the EQ only works with music that is played via the app itself. This is definitely worth calling out as it severely limits the usefulness of the eq (I’m sure you played music using the app when you tested the eq, but there is a chance that you didn’t which would, you know, result in the eq not being very effective ha).
    7. Battery life & charging. Would be nice to get some feedback re: battery life, effect of ANC on battery life, time to charge/any quick charge ability, etc
    8. And lastly one that swings back to #2: I found it interesting that the Shure’s have a total of 6 mics. My understanding is that for calls a beam forming array of only 2 of them is used, both on the same side. The remaining 4 used for ANC in some capacity or another…
    Anyway, great job!

I believe on the Shure AONIC 50, all supported codecs are available even during a multipoint connection, whereas on the Sony XM4s, LDAC cannot be used with multipoint. Personally, I do not find this a problem with the XM4s that I own, as the overall connectivity and sharpness of the headphones seems to negate any lag or de-sync problems that could potentially occur. That's not to say that lag or connection issues wouldn't occur though, because I'm certain that they probably would for some things, so I guess it depends on what you'd be doing really.
However, depending on your usage requirements, you may feel that the Shure offering is better suited to your needs. For example, if you wanted to be connected to an Android smartphone and a Windows 10 PC simultaneously, streaming via the aptX codec from both.
The main drawbacks with the XM4 are the lack of aptX and the codec restrictions during multipoint. Apart from these two things, they are very enjoyable, very practical, and have great sound with plenty of features and chance to customise to one's liking. It is clear why both these and their predecessors (XM3s) are so highly-regarded.
Overall though, as tempting as it sometimes is to be swayed by the majority on so many things, with something like this, especially costing so much, there is no shame or disgrace in being different if you are genuinely choosing what will make you happiest.
I have 3 very different pairs of headphones.
    - XM4s, my all-rounders, easy to carry, practical and sounding great for me after playing with the EQ a little to slightly dullen the bass and lift the upper-mids a touch. (Sony's own EQ in the headphone connect app now allows continued LDAC on the XM4s by the way, which was not previously possible on the XM3s)
    - Sennheiser HD599SE, the ones I enjoy at home for clarity, in a quiet space. Got these at half price on Amazon for £95 a while ago, great purchase
    - Anker SoundCore Vortex, a relatively inexpensive Bluetooth set of Headphones, which are surprisingly well-built and great sounding for the money (£50), and also support aptX. Really comfortable too, nice thick padding, and these are the set that I take to work with me and carry around when I can worry less about damage/loss/theft etc.
Because of the headphones I use, the Shure AONIC 50 fell into a bit of a no man's land between the idea of the XM4s and the 599s, because they are not as practical or portable as the XM4s, but they also don't lean as far towards the 'pure listening' side of the story as the 599s do... so, for my needs personally, the Shures were not the right choice for me. I was very tempted though, I think they look really robust and the sound quality is definitely a huge plus, after all that's the bottom line, the sound.
Overall I think it's great that we all have so much choice from different brands, it is definitely not as simple as Bose vs Sony. Perhaps there is no such thing as perfect headphones (or at least not without paying huge premiums, haha), but hey, once you find some that are right for you, you'll be enjoying them way too much to care about the minor details anymore! :)
Also, I've seen the XM3s for below £200 from various retailers... I think that's an excellent value purchase, and myself and my brother may buy some as a joint birthday present for our dad. He can knock himself out on all the prog rock he wants then! :D

Hey. They updated that. You can now apply the eq to any audiofile. You don't need to go through the whole pain of having the audiofiles on the shure app. I'm glad I took the plunge and went with the Aonic 50.

I want great quality sound and dont care about more bass or NC unless I'm at an extremely loud place which is rare. Also I dont trust being out in public without hearing the people around me. Additionally I dont care about looks as long as its not completely ugly lol. In the end I chose to get the more durable Shure 50 headphones. Thanks, amazing work Aaron!

@ZenRaid at first they were a bit bland but they got better in about 2 weeks. They work better with a good DAC. The sound is more neutral and not as dynamic as I would say the XM4s. I think they are better than the M4 sound wise to my taste.
However I think I wouldve of gone for the Sundaras or Focals Elegia instead though theyre not Bluetooth compatible.

As a Trucker who mixs music on my xm2,s when im not driving .... I need a strong noise canceling headphone to kill the APU sound while mixing during the work week ... If Shure improves this Id buy .. Or if Sony improves the eq into a parametric eq like the shure I will upgrade .... I have my xm2 near flat in response but a full 10 band parametric would be great ... Just a little subtractive eq out the peaks here and there in a few more spots with a Q option and they would be golden .

Did you level match the playback level of the voice recordings? I know that you know that whatever sounds louder will typically be picked as what sounds best. Also, what setting of noise cancellation were the Shure phones set to? Maximum? Finally, are the joints on the Shure headphones made of metal? Or just plastic that looks like metal? Thanks for your thorough review.

Would be interesting to see if the "everything on the Shure sounds a little better except perhaps the bass" conclusion is the same or tips more toward Shure or Sony. My use case is 80% stationary.

I thought the Shure's phonecall quality was much better than the XM4's, that wobblyness just doesn't sound good to me at all...
I should note I bought the XM4's as my first good pair of headphones partially (mostly) down to your review/previews and have not been dissapointed, the noise cancelling is crazy good, some dudes digging up the street near my house were 99% cut out, while the RAF Typhoons doing their crazy verticle takeoff shit, While still audible, no longer make my ears feel like they're going to explode and I can hear what I'm listening to over them (even at low volume.)
I also don't think the extra $50 would affect peoples decision making too much, since when you convince yourself to spend over 300, you've already lost the ability to budget rationally, lol.

@@sternkrieger1950 You can't extract the instrument clarity and separation of the Shure from the Sony, yes, I am Shure. Had XM4, Momentum 3 and Aonic 50 for a couple of weeks together. The A50 have bass when it's called for (unless you EQ them) and the bass is much more defined and less muddy than XM4. If you are looking to turn every song into a bass dominant song the A50 is not for you.

Boy, I had been wondering about the ANC, since Sony's is fantastic and doesn't put extra pressure on my ear drums like some cheaper headsets when it's activated. The amount of silence compared to the Shure was amazing. The Aonic 50 seems like a good enough sample, if you want more codecs and a different sound signature, it's a solid choice. But it's hard to beat the king.

Aaron !! BIG question for you !! I am really hesitating between the sony's xm3 and the Shure aonic ! Main concerns are: Music quality and connectability ! Thats why I've choose the xm3 over the xm4. I want to most latency free headphones for my PC/videos/streaming/youtube etc... While having the best musci quality possible. The shure have Bluethoot 5 and all the codecs. While the sony's are bluethoot 4,2. I love all the sony's device sounds byt Shure seems really good and better. Where I am, Both are the same price ! Your thoughts will really help me since all your videos have been I good influence on my choices so far ! Thx man !!

If they’re the same price it’s a no brainer. I’ve been using both for over a week now and can’t put the A50s down. The longer I listen to the shures now the more muffled the xm4s sound to me. Also being able to seamlessly switch between plugged in laptop to android Bluetooth connected phone call is HUGE. Th xm4s are basically one or the other and switching I find I have to literally turn off and re-pair. I really don’t get the hype other than looks...

  • @Wolfox360
    @Wolfox360 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think some questions will never be answered, I have the XM3 and the only annoying thing is white noise in a not noisy eviroment, Real """"""Audiophile"""""" people i'm sure they know what i'm talking about. It is significantly reduced making the App perform is ear test, and also the classic NC pressure is not noticeable, that was the first thing keeping me away from ANC. But when you are home, after you switch off the vacuum machine, or in the office when all the colleagues leave, all the time the music ends you hear a vibration, not there if you switch OFF the ANC. Also setting ambient noise at 1 this issue is solved, but then At this point I just switch off the ANC. So If I don't get this answer I just Keep my XM3. Plus with Bluetooth 5.0 still having latency in 2020!!!!

First let me say that this review has been a tremendous help for me in coming to a decision. I am looking for a good pair of headsets to use with the Avantree Oasis Bluetooth 5.0 Transmitter Receiver . The Aventree supports the aptx Low Latency codec which is why after viewing this video I'm leaning to the Shure for all their codec support. I, however, love the features of the Sony and was hoping the lack of aptx really wouldn't lead to audio-visual lags. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have both, and I'm going to be completely honest. The Sony kills the Aonic 50 in my opinion. The Aonic 50 is more crisp and has better overall clarity, but only by a very little. The noise cancelling on the Aonic 50 is trash, as well as the bass. There is absolutely no bass on the shure aonic 50s

Fair comparison. I think the Sony is more focussed on the job they are going to do. There was really no comparison on the ANC and Voice calling. The Sony looks far and away the most modern. The shure looks very bulky and dated and wouldn't be the ones I would want to be seen wearing out or in an airport etc. Alexa works really well with the Sony not mentioned on the Shure. The Sony App is way better too. Sound stage/ spacial attenuation is possible within the Sony app but not mentioned. So its the Sony for me hands down more contemporary and focused.
