This is very impressive work and a very good Part One. One can't reasonably ask for more due to the fact you are transferring a 2d image into a 3d model and the stylized nature of the image. However, I would have taken more inspiration from the natural features of real life animals and incorporating it more into the model. For example, I would have taken the whiskers of the dragon in the original image and found a real life counterpart, in this case, most likely a catfish. Catfish have a little buildup at the base of their whiskers to the point where there skin is stretched into the whisker. I say they are whiskers instead of hair or feathers because of the nature of the dragon being Japanese. I would stay away from stylized depictions of eyes and try to sculpt them the best you can akin to real life analogs, mostly because I am afraid you'll get into the habit of undermining your own art with realistic scales and teeth but cartoony anatomy of eyes. I would sculpt the base of the eyes with the buildup of eagle eyes, mostly because they have binocular vision, but detail the pupil and iris with that of a crocodile. Never forget to sculpt the eye lids and some dragons have a nictitating membrane.
Apologies for not replying to this sooner, but thank you very much for the brilliant advice. I'd seen this comment a while ago and tried to use it for my more recent sculptures, especially the eye-tips for my Houndril and Deathwing models. I feel like my eyes have been improved, although a second opinion is more than welcome. Your point on catfish whiskers is something I hope I can remember next time I decide to do whisker-like protrusions. Again, thank you for the feedback, and to point out that the clash between realism and stylized depictions can be problematic later on, it is incredible helpful!
Hey darkedgetv, (or Rebecca if im correct) Your sculptris arts look so amazing to me. I wonder if they are actually 3D printable? (im just askin because we have 3d printers here my university, and under 1year or 2 i should be able to access them, that would be great if i could learn to develop such things like you)
Make a Zerg :D (your original desing based on starcraft) Design Process According to Samwise Didier, the zerg design process can be summed up as follows: 1) You start with lots of teeth. 2) You choose a troop type: a) Melee attacker b) Ranged attacker c) Flying attacker d) All of the above (game designers don't like this option, as it's too multi-purposed) 3) Pick a form: a) Decapod b) Hexapod c) Octopod d) Serpentine 4) Add 2 or more of the following: a) Poisonous spines b) More teeth c) Barbed tails d) Jagged claws e) Spiked back plates f) Insectoid wings g) Venemous tendrils h) Bat wings i) Acidic glands j) A lot more teeth 5) Choose a name prefix: a) Rage b) Omega c) Spore d) Ravage e) Blade f) Destruct g) Terror h) Any other word that sounds violent and exudes overall nastiness. 6) Choose a suffix: a) -ling b) -lisk c) -tor d) -zor e) -etc.
