Greece wildfire: Tourists return to hotels on Kos island following overnight evacuation

- Hundreds of tourists gathered at a football pitch near the Kos International Airport in Greece on Monday, after being evacuated from nearby hotels following raging fires that tore through dry mountainous terrain in the area, according to an eyewitness.
In videos captured by a tourist on the scene, fires are visible in the distance, with thick black plumes of smoke rising in the air.
Reuters news agency was able to verify the footage from matching the terrain to topographic rendered maps, buildings and structural layout as seen on file, satellite and corroborating images.
Dozens of fires broke out across Greece, including two close to the capital, Athens, over the weekend.

my family and i have just come home 1 hr ago from this, it all happened very quick and affected many people we walked to the air port to spend a long night on the floor ,but it was better than the stadium

Kardamena ( correct spelling) does have bushes around it but it’s self contained and should be safe. More rural is Antimachia the next village up toward the airport. There shouldn’t be any threat to hotels apart from smoke depending which way the wind blows. They normally have fires ever year so News Channels are over dramatising the situation!!

I was here in this camp there was 5800 people laid on Astro pitch also 2 toilets the army did a great job feeding us and giving water out but the tui reps need to be ashamed of them self’s and them cues for the busses was not that calm it was absolutely carnage people punshing running was supposed women with children and disabled first but was not the case people running for the busses and pushing leaving children and disabled people to be left In the boiling sun after freezing all night with no blankets absolutely shambles
I was there too mate we came back last night me and my two brothers was over there during the fires we was with TUI and I agree with you, regardless of the apology and offering a refund for one night we are still complaining. We ended up at the airport when we wasn’t even supposed to be there and when we tried to get information from the TUI reps they did not want to know, saying as an excuse they was waiting for an update from the civil guard even after 9 hours sleeping on the floor. I feel bad for you guys on the football field and church aswell we had another couple in the church covered in cockroaches from our hotel! Bus situation was a shambles people fighting to get on not even letting kids, women and disabled on.. never booking a holiday with TUI again
OK my Greek neighbour just went to Greece for two months. Then this crap breaks out. Wonder if they're ok out there.
