    We live in a rental home with carpet over these tiles--in the kitchen, hallway, and bathroom. The carpet is in bad condition and needs to be ripped out, but our landlord got a quote and it was high, like you said. Now we just gotta live with it. My main concern is in the bathroom, where the tile is popping up in front of the tub. It worries me because we've got 4 kids, you know? We have been really lenient renters and unfortunately that has set the tone for what gets addressed for repairs in the house.

    Renovating old kitchen, removing lower cabinets revealed massive amount of water damage. Dad started sawing the subfloor to see how many joists were affected. Then we saw there are asbestos tiles under on of the layers of flooring. He power sawed the heck out of it before we even knew. Dust everywhere. Hvac on. Like what now 😬😬😬

    Help pleas - If you have an area of 5x7 say, where the tiles are already up and you want to put in another type of vinyl tile in that space whilst leaving the rest of the tile in the room intact what would you use to prep/seal the sub floor before using another adhesive for the new tile? Many many thanks! Jay

    I removed carpet 3 days ago in our new home and uncovered an entire room of asbestos tiles! (House built 1960) I removed one tile to show someone underneath which revealed black mastic adhesive on top of plywood! Seems original to the house indicative of VAT tile! I learned that by watching, reading here online on what everyone is saying! Yesterday I sprayed the entire floor with water made like a little bath on the floor (never swept also taped shut two hvac ducts in the room) I pulled all the staples on my hands and knees yesterday and took like 4 rags and two full buckets of water to wipe the debris, staples and dust off the top layer! My wife is pregnant at home and this is an upstairs room! This will be the babys room eventually soo my goal is to gut the entire room sheetrock painting etc; and encapsulate the tile floor properly! I cleaned the surfaces yesterday to have ready a clean, flat, and ready surface! My idea would be to use special paint to seal the tile (I read somewhere here online epoxy of some sort) any suggestions would be appreciated and then eventually black paper and laminate flooring on top for a perfect encapsulation ! Any suggestions on materials or alternatives would be highly appreciated before I start going at this alone! My store would be home depot ideally! Thank you

      gmoneyyp90 I’ve been looking for some kind of answer on your same scenario. I pulled up carpet in basement and 9x9 is all intact well except whoever laid carpet years ago already removed tiles around perimeter of room to lay tack strips except in one 8ft area they nailed into the tiles and they are all cracked and broken. Plus they staples pad into tile and there’s a lot of staples. I’m wondering if I should do this myself and if I pull those staples out will new particles be released before I even get new vinyl plank flooring down to cover it? And should I wet area down where cracked tiles are now exploded since I pulled up carpet? The pad is only left intact as of now

    Hi, Few tiles of ours in 1966 . we have a very 1970's or early 1980's basement (cant tell) Few 12x12 tiles popped because kids with their athletic equipment bags were tossing their bags from the 1st to the basement down the stairs and cost several to pop up. Not sure I understand how to remove the mastic and the tile.

    • @inspectordaggett
      @inspectordaggett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      One way to go about it is to apply heat to the tiled with a heat gun to soften them up and allow them to more easily come up from the floor. This makes the tiles more pliable and they will not chip or crack when done properly and the glue will soften and allow the bond to be more easily broken from the tile and the adhesive. Once the tiles are up you can put other materials down over the surface. Again caution should be used if you suspect that the tiles or mastic (adhesive) may have asbestos

    Four years ago, I bought a rehab. house that was built in 1955 and did repairs myself. The carpeting was heavily soiled with dog urine and we were concerned that the urine might have seeped into the joints between the tiles. I didn’t think of asbestos at the time and just took a putty knife to remove the tiles. Many popped right off intact, some broke in two and some were stubborn and broke into many pieces. We swept up the debris and put it out in the trash, then washed the concrete slab and painted over it (to seal in any smell). Now I think we probably removed tiles with asbestos, and there was dust involved. I have heard it can take decades following exposure to develop asbestos-related illness. I am almost 65 now and hope to die of another cause before such illness could appear. Fortunately, this work was done before the heating and cooling systems functioned, so I am thankful for that. Any recommendations at this late date?

    • @inspectordaggett
      @inspectordaggett  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I would not advise it. You will end up getting fractures in the self leveling concrete. If it is on a plywood sub-floor then it will flex and crack the concrete and it will become loose. Even on a concrete there can be moisture and expansion issues with the tiles shrinking or expanding with warm and cold. What are you intending to put over it for your finished floor?

Any flooring glued down can have it. Drywall can have it. HVAC tape, shingles, the heat shield above the furnace, insulation.....it's actually a long list. So anything at all where you are possibly making dust or getting fibers airborne, just think twice and do lots of research. Some of the jobs you can safely DIY, but some of them you absolutely cannot. And depending on where you live, it may be illegal to do it yourself even if you follow safety procedures. There is a product call RMR86 which is a peroxide-based solution. I would recommend cleaning with that Problem is if you have mold on the surface there is a chance you may have mold under the tiles as well. So if you simply clean the top surface then you may be leaving the mold and it may come back on the surface and become a greater issue. You may be best service by having the asbestos tiles removed especially if they have been flooded. I would recommend talking with a qualified contractor to determine what the best approach is. If removal is needed I would strongly recommend paying a professional to do the removal.

      I am just a DIYer and retired Realtor. You are going to want a licensed & insured contractor/inspector to look at your situation. If you have asbestos tiles they seem to be the least dangerous of the asbestos products. If the tiles are loose or already broken you can pick them up, put them in a garbage bag, and throw them away. Be careful not to crack or break the tiles, that is when the fibers can get airborne. You may not be able to put asbestos tiles with your regular trash. Encapsulation is much easier/cheaper than removal. Another reason to get the opinion of a contractor is because what is a good flooring for your basement will vary based on a number of factors. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. I don’t want to tell you, “go ahead and cover it with linoleum, “ and in less than a year it looks terrible because of some unknown reason.

    We plan to lay vinyl tiles right over what’s clearly 9x9 asbestos tiles. All tiles are intact well except a few missing tiles here and there. They previously laid
    carpet tack stripes along perimeter of
    room and nailed right into some of the tiles. Most of them they removed though around perimeter except one wall where the cracked tiles are. They also stapled the carpet pad right into tiles everywhere, and we have to remove those. Can we safely just sweep up loose tiles and debris and pull out staples while masked and properly cover up? I’m not really nervous about the few loose broken tiles because I figure they have already been broken under the carpet for years now. But I’m worried pulling staples out will release more particles, causing more damage.

      @@Mrs.Crawford2014 Yes it is possible that it has asbestos. Usually the concern with Sheet Vinyl is asbestos in the backing material. If you are concerned about the material the best thing to do before removal is cut a small corner off the material and have it tested to determine if it has any asbestos in it. If there is an adhesive that appear to have fibrous content you may want to have that tested also. Best case scenario is to get a piece of the vinyl with the glue attached to it.

      Inspector Daggett thanks for replying, that’s great information. The building is an old church fellowship hall. Some of us was thinking it’d be better to try to remove it ourselves, I just wanted to cover it... instead we just live with it. It’s a huge job. Haha.
      We will now do more research into removal. Thank you again.

      The problem is even with the licensed contractor, they won't be able to remove 100% of it. I asked the contractor and this is their answer "We actually remove about 98% of the mastic". Of course, this number is not a scientific number but a guest.

      I can assure you this was asbestos tiles. Cracking one piece without hazmat is not a serious safety concern. As the video states the problem with asbestos is when it is air borne and inhaled in mass. To crack one piece was not a significant safety issue for the sake of this educational video.

      NO you cannot! Excerpt from our State's "proper" ASB diposal proceduresl:
      Disposal Facilities
      To dispose of friable asbestos waste, complete an Asbestos Waste Shipment Record (PDF) and deliver it to one of the authorized asbestos disposal facilities listed below. Nonfriable asbestos-containing waste must be promptly stored in a disposal container and labeled "nonfriable asbestos waste." For further disposal instructions and costs, contact a local disposal facility.
      Should have at least handled the PACM with impermeable gloves . . .

      @@jls.628 It depends on where you live. Where I currently live, Daggett's advice is correct. Double bag and label, and throw out with regular trash. Where I used to live, this was illegal. So people need to contact their own landfills or waste management and see what should be done in their specific area. My mom's smaller town in another state doesn't even require double bagging nor labeling, and they will accept non friable asbestos in one regular trash bag.🤷 The rules definitely do change fast when it's friable though.
