Life After Microdiscectomy

  • Microdiscectomy is a common surgery to remove a herniated portion of the intervertebral disc that is compressing the traversing spinal nerve root. The total recovery time is 6 weeks. Before you go home, physical therapists will instruct you on how to get in and out of bed.
Short walks are recommended on flat surfaces. A walker or cane can be used if required.
Patients can shower after 1 or 2 days but should cover the incision area with a small bandage and tape. Avoid water hitting directly over the surgical area, and avoid baths in a tub until told otherwise.
You may return to light work duties or desk jobs after 2 weeks. Driving (short distance) is allowed after 3 weeks.
Avoid sitting in the same position for more than 45-60 minutes. Take short walks for a few minutes every 30 minutes to an hour to relieve pressure.
You may return to heavy work as early as 5-6 weeks after surgery. You can resume sports after 6 weeks.

Herniating a disc was the worst thing that ever happened to me. Having back surgery was emotionally traumatic. I felt so alone and scared. That was 2019. I am now pain free and living a normal life. YOU can get there too! You will not be stuck in this pain forever!

I just had the surgery last week. I feel so much relief after. However, I was lifting a dining chair around a few times to have better comfort and sit wherever! Now I’m freaking out because I feel like some of that pain is returning. Not as bad just a light phantom pain effect. Please tell me I’m crazy! And everything’s going to be ok!

I'm 1 year out from my l5-s1 microdiscectomy. My ruptured disc causes excruciating leg pain. It felt like my thigh was being ripped apart. I lost all feeling in about 70% of my foot and was bed bound for about 2 months until I was able to get on steroids & get into PT. Those things definitely helped to lessen the pain but in the end I still had to have the surgery. It was the right choice for me. Recovery from the surgery went relatively well, my leg pain was almost entirely gone. Unfortunately what happened in return was that I now have lower back pain & I feel physically weaker. But the back pain is the lesser of 2 evils so if given the chance again I would still choose to have the surgery.

i had this surgery on the 15th of April 2024, its been 4 weeks and i no longer have back pain. I was in and out the same day of surgery. The first few steps were difficult as my left leg felt numb and still does from time to time. I am currently able to drive and return to normal activities around the house but still cautious until i hit the 6-8 weeks recommended recovery period. I am currently 35 years old and having a herniated disc at such a young age seemed to be such a shock to me. Happy to have had the surgery and being able to be able. I have read a few other comments and seems like a lot of people had similar pains and results.

I had this surgery 6 years ago. Unless there’s some other medical issue, this is an outpatient surgery. I got to the hospital at 7:30 am and was home by 3:00 pm. I came home with a huge bandage on and was told I could shower the next day albeit not by myself in case of anything.
I had a follow up appointment 2 weeks later but the large bandage came off after 5 days and the smaller one at the 2 week check up. I was able to start working out again…lightly after 6 weeks. Because I worked from home I resumed work the day after the surgery.
I was walking up to a mile by my 2 week check up but that’s just me, I’m an avid walker so may be different for others.
I have RA so now I have chronic back pain after the surgery. Not the surgeons fault…it’s just how my body works.
My disc herniation caused me not to be able to walk on my own so I definitely needed the surgery.
    Everyone has a different experience.

I herniated two of my disks L4 and L5 10 millimeter, I was having the worst pain ever. There is no painkiller could helped except a bullet, so after forty days I was under the knife. Spending two night in the hospital I cam home on my own feet I took a walk in the park and later that day I even drove my car. I have medium pain on the incision area but my sciatic pain is gone for 80 percentage.Doctor told me that it's not gonna be hundred percent ever I think I made the right decision having a surgery because all other options would only prolonged my injury. Two nights in hospital was absolutely ncececcery because after the surgery for a few hours you might fee good but by night all the anesthesia worn out and I was in pain again the next day I felt better and stable so I could go home. I'm 73 so imagine I was worry so much.
