    The first thing I bought while getting into traditional WetShaving was a classic samurai Shavette. It’s stainless and probably the best bang for your buck about $14 w/ 100 blades
    Of course the pros for it is you can use your favorite blades and you don’t have to do all of that “bullshit”
    On the other hand A lot of people like myself enjoy stroping and Honing a straight razor so I guess a Shavette will be perfect for the people that are not trying to get into traditional straight razors. It’s still get that same feeling. Cause after all they are both open blades on your friggin face!
    I also have a CJB KAMASORI that takes the Feather Artist club blades.
    I’ve been using a Shavette on and off for years before I started using a straight razor. And it really helped me transition. I’ve been using a straight for about eight months and started traditional WetShaving with Shavettes, modern and vintage safety razors for about 5 years now.
    Vintage Gillettes will always be my favorite but I straights are getting used a lot more often in my Shave Den

      Hey Mike!! Great thoughts on straights and shavettes!! I love my real straights as well, and enjoy stripping but I don’t like the maintenance like sending them out to be honed… gets pricy after awhile, so that’s where I really love shavettes, get that nice straight razor shave with the convenience of simply changing the blade. Love my vintage razors too, they will always be in rotation. Take care brother!

    If a razor needs honing by a professional before using it is NOT entry level. It’s a value blade that can be put into service by a seasoned veteran shaver. Cheap and entry level should not be confused.

    • @JMac.
      @JMac.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, there’s not really any “entry level “ blades that come honed, unless your buying from a retailer that does it on sight, good examples are Böker, Dobok, etc… the factory edge on those is not shave ready and needs to be properly honed.

    I know I’ll never stop using both styles now, I enjoy them both too much.
    I’m glad I learned to use shavettes first though, yes they can be a lot more difficult than a straight (depending on the style), but they force you to develop a really good touch if you are going to use them well.

    Interesting video but you forgot to mention that THE major factor in choosing between a straight razor and a shavette is price. Most SRs I’ve seen are pricey anywhere between $200-$300 or more (add to the the cost of extras to keep it in good condition as well as the time and practice in honing and stropping a SR) while a shavette is far less expensive but with good quality the price can be as low as $30 which I’m sure is easily within the average guys range so a shavette is the best way to go hands down.

    I like a Shavette for the low entry price compared to a straight razor, I wanted the experience and feel badass while shaving, sending a straight razor away for honing or honing it myself, strop it and all that is not something I'd like to do right now, yes, I cut myself the first time I shaved with a shavette, but it was not big deal and just made me want to do it again and get better at it, I'm so excited to receive my own shavette with astra platinum blades because my first experience was with something cheap, but hey, it got me hooked up.

    Justin you da man when it comes to straights. Very very educational vid especially for a newbie like me. DE easy to get the angle right. What is the angle for a straight or is it just feel? How many straight uses before honing needs to be done? Wet shaving is a journey, 1st class is a straight. The perfect shave is the desired destination. Take Care Brother and Stay Safe.

    • @JMac.
      @JMac.  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Brent! I’m humbled, I feel as if my skills are kinda middle of the road lol, just good enough to get the job done. As far as angle, generally around a spines width off the face for an WTG pass, then very shallow for ATG, but it also comes down to feel and grind.... wedgy type grinds use steeper angles etc. As as far as shaves per hone, depends on your beard type and if your using a good grind for your beard, your stopping technique, not dinging the edge on things etc. I couid probably have an hour long video on straights and still not cover everything lol. That being said, every step of the way if you go that route, I’ll help ya.

    is shavettes a good option if I have very sensitive skin, very thick and coarse beard, and want a baby bottom smooth shave every day?

    • @JMac.
      @JMac.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say yes, because the blades are mechanically sharpened, you won’t have to worry if your edge is getting dull, you just simply replace it. For sensitive skin and a coarse beard, I would recommend a Feather Artist Club razor, like the SS, SR, DX, whichever suits your fancy, as they take the AC Blades which are thicker than DE blades and they remove whiskers very efficiently and smoothly, without needing to over shave. I hope this helps!

    • @Thadnill
      @Thadnill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JMac. Thanks for the reply and recommendations ! I have got a really high interest for the Feather artist club sr after some research, now the only thing that I need to do is to actually take the plunge. I have some experience with DE but never tried a shavette or straight razor, and honestly a little about it. But maybe as long as I take it easy and slow in the beginning it'll be fine? One option is to buy a really cheap one, like the Sailor's shavette that's only 20 euro ish to see if I enjoy the process, or I just take the big plunge and go for the feather and force myself to learn and like it... What would you do ?

    • @JMac.
      @JMac.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thadnill you’re most welcome! I have a policy of buy once, cry once, to be honest, a $20 Feather Style shavette likely won’t have the same clamping on the blade that the real deal does, and the build quality won’t be as nice either. Anyone can learn to use one of these, I’m confident in that, and like you already have it figured out, take ot nice and slow at first, and you will get the hang of it. Beauty of these is you can take the blade out and practice with them, and really build up that muscle memory. I would check Amazon and eBay for deals on Feather shavettes, they are usually cheaper there than from the online retailers.
