  • In this video, I take a brand new Quangsheng Luban No 4 smoothing plane out of the box, check everything for flatness and sharpen it ready for work. Watch to see just how little work it takes to get it ready!

Top stuff mate, I now realise I need (aka. want) a Veritas honing guide.

I've used others and they all work. The veritas is a different beast though. Specially if you get the narrow blade holder and cambered roller too. Between those and the standard honing guide, there is nothing in my hand tool cabinet I can't sharpen perfectly, other than scrapers and spoke shaves, but you don't need a honing guide for them. It really is an excellent tool.

they are good, but even having one,im still soending too much time to sharpen. i advise learning to freehand it.

I have been using my Vertitas Mk 2 honing guide for some years and found it works quite well on plane blades but, I won’t use it on my chisels as they slide all over the place and I am not spending any more money just to add the adapter that’s been created to overcome this fault. Found the Richard Kell the best all rounder but am now working on hand honing.

@@rpowell222 ive heard this a lot about the mk2 but ive never found an issue sharpening thinner blades. I use very light pressure and holding when i do them and it always worked for me.
