Spotting Bad Recruiters

  • Over the years I have been contacted by a lot of recruiters however there has always been pushy recruiters who are just out to make a buck. Don't get me wrong, I like recruiters in general and have used them for job placement however when recruiters put their interests in front of the companies and job candidates no one wins but the recruiter. Below are a few guidelines for recruiting.
    1) No means no. When a candidate says they aren't interested just move on.
    2) Clearly define the job and job type. Many bad recruiters will disguise contract positions until the very last second in an attempt to get you to take a job. This is bad for the company and the job candidate.
    3) Don't try to guild a candidate into taking a job by making comments like, "well your profile says you're interested in moving to XYZ." Yes them may be open to moving but it's usually only if an amazing offer comes up.
    4) Don't try to sell job candidates on positions solely based on the compensation. Yes it is nice to make more money however if the job position doesn't fit no one will be happy.

See my response. It's all form letters and dialing for dollars. My favorite are the "Dear " form letters. Those people should be deported.

Most common thought when I read those emails from recruiters: "Did you read my resume?"

This is not how to spot bad recruiters. this is the complete recounting of an episode with a dingbat.
A bad recruiter is one that hooks you, you bother all of your references in good faith, and then they disappear.

A trashy recruiter just called me to threaten me after I rejected that job offer. The reason I rejected the offer is that he wanna me to accept the offer within 2 hours.

They treat you horribly if you reject the job offer. I was threatened and told I would be on a list.

I love the recruiters that ghost you after an interview.

The worst is being ghosted before the first interview. I've had a few set up a meeting and then not respond for rescheduling.

I remember being out a work for extended period of times from 2017 to about 2019ish. Most of the recruiters I dealt with were about a good as old chewing gum we left under our desk in Elementary School. The ones I HATE the most are the ones from other countries with the thick accent who talke a million miles a minute. I remember turning one down after I found out he was a part of a resume finding mill, he called my PARENTS home!!!!

One way to spot bad recruiters is to take a look at the first job she/he presents to you. By taking that look, you will know whether or not the recruiter is taking your demand/thoughts/needs seriously.

The fact that the second recruiter was willing to double the rate just shows how much he was hoping to low-ball you.

I've started making it a point to publically expose recruiters shocking behavior, documenting correspondance, taking notes, and pubilshing in to Glassdoor, leaving google reviews for the recruiting company, and however else i can share with others to help them avoid these dodgy people! The more we all do this, the more power we have, and the less clients will use them.

As for the mic, this is an older video, I've upgraded mics and lighting since then. If you look at my How to Get a Job Series, they are even worse lol. I'm thinking of remaking those videos though.

The reason I am not a big fan of contract work is because it is hard to line up contracts to have continuous work. I have friends who worked contract in NYC and would be unemployed for a few months at a time. Another reason I don't like contract work is because the compensation is misleading. Contracts usually pay an hourly rate that is higher than what you make on salary. The catch is that you usually don't get health benefits, 401k, or PTO (paid time off). You also have the risk of not having another contract lined up once your current contract ends which costs you time and money. Overall I think contract work is risky and underpays compared to a full-time salaried position however there are people who like contract work and are good at lining up new contracts.
