@@charburger9284 the beat on everybody has a much faster tempo, and the flows on alright are way faster than on everybody, i can see the similarity but logic used to just really like upbeat tracks with vocal cuttings in the background: metropolis (which is sampling the same track as sing about me), fade away, upgrade, run it, everybody etc. with everybody (the album) it felt like logic heard tpab and sai to himself "I can do this", it tries to tackle racial themes (and fails misrebaly imo, since he almost only talks about being biracial or his black side in the most surface level possible), it has really long tracks like a kendrick album, but these are just unnecessrily long (halellujiah, take it back, africariyan, anziety). I actually feel like the production on everybody was very unique and different to tpab, and was the strongest part of the album.

Pre-TPAB Kendrick barely got criticism. But even people annoyed by how "pretentious" and "overrated" TPAB was gave him a fraction of criticism to the criticism he received post-DAMN.
Or at least; that's my experience.
I think if Kendrick didn't go mainstream he would be held in a higher position than he is right now, mostly because people think mainstream = bad. Most people who are mainstream music listeners that say "Oh yeah I'm a Kendrick fan" have only heard Humble, DNA, King Kunta, i, Alright etc. the songs that he basically made to reach a wide audience.
I agree, I think people just equate mainstream with bad, and when they find out one of the most mainstream rappers there is is not bad but actually really amazing, threy can't believe it and try so hard to find flaws in Kendrick.
He's a media creation, nothing real about him. How do you supposedly have "3 classic albums" but hasn't influenced any of your peers or "the culture" at large? Isn't that how albums become classics? His hype and acclaim are paid for by Interscope.
Logic is more influencial because he can rap whilst solving a rubix cube. In 100 years when the human population is 23% and robots have taken over all the robots will be rapping and solving math equations at the same time. Only then will you understand logics impact.

It was a day like any other. Anthony Fantano, the Internet’s busiest music nerd, was hard at work listening to music that he was to review. It was sunny, and slightly humid, so he had left his shirt off for the day. His girlfriend was dealing with an emergency at work.

Grime is dying out in the UK but not anywhere else. Its not popular with its target demographic anymore (working class inner city boys) and has been dying out for YEARS. Ever since Giggs dropped talkin the hardest it essentially laid the groundwork for the future generation of young British rappers and most underground rappers in the UK are Drill and UK rap and they are the people who most young people listen to these days, especially in London. To prove my point if you go on GRM Daily or Link Up TV I can guarantee you that you will find maybe one grime song out of 20. Ironically grime is far more mainstream nowadays with artists like Stormzy and Skepta and so looses its underground appeal. Grime has had short revivals and it hasn't been dead per say but its always been on the decline since 08 and the people who are carrying the genre have been BBK, Bugzy Malone and others with the only real successful breakout grime artists since 2010 have been Chip, Bugzy and Stormzy. I am telling you in raves, shoobz and most public school gatherings you will almost never hear a grime song.
Btw GRIME is not UK hip hop, they are two totally different things and have two totally different origins. Grime is essentially are darker sounding UK Garage beat with a bit of Rap influences, people were rapping on UK Garage beats before Grime with crews like So Solid, Heartless and Pay as u go cartel (who's members included a young Wiley)
essentially Grime came from Garage and is classified as EDM, its not Hip Hop.

As you said, Peep had more emo-punk-pop in his music, well there's already a lane for that in Rock, but for hip hop so I feel Cudi gave emo rap and feelings of melancholy in rap an anchor, an aesthetic, and a more identifiable formula. I would use his presence throughout 808's and heartbreak as an example and especially "Welcome to Heartbreak" and album cuts like "These Worries ft. Mary J. Blige"
I would say Slug/Atmosphere pioneered modern emo rap. Not to mention early Eminem. Kid Cudi to an extent also.

my friend is obsessed with both death grips and kero kero bonito so that one tweet made me laugh, cause its true. i love lil peep but he didnt start emo rap. he did, however, do it in a very good way, where it was both true to himself and had elements of more popular areas of music and aesthetic, and it definitely made emo rap accessible to way more people. and its influenced a whole new era of up and coming rappers. his legacy is a good one. and no way is grime rap dying, drake is signed with the BBK label and had skepta and giggs on more life, stormzy has new music out, and its been super influential in rap, and i only see it getting bigger from here.
