  • The Sony A6300 is one of our favourite APSC cameras, so we were surprised when an update was announced after less than a year. Boasting in-body stabilization, a touch screen and a hugely enhanced buffer, are the A6500 upgrades worth the extra money? Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake went to the A6500 press event in Austin Texas to find out.

Well done, guys. It's very clear that the Sony "perks" didn't rob you of your journalistic integrity. This is a well balanced look at a camera that maybe should have come out six months to a year later with deeper refinements. This is the Sony way, though, for good or bad.

I like your reviews and most of the better reviewers seem to follow the same logic. What i don't really understand is why all focus on 1 or 2 features to decide if to upgrade or not. I own all 3 of these camera's soon and to me the differences between them come in small steps but many of them. Sure in this case IBIS is the biggie and touchscreen for most the second but there are about 20? other updates from bluetooth gps, image from video, better grip. better dial, better buttons, extra button, better heat control, buffer depth, no locking when preview etc etc that add all up to the value for a update. Not saying the review is bad but for owners these small things add up and just like with your phone they add up quickly over multiple versions the 6500 probably has close to 50 changes compared to the 6000.

Ok everyone, thank you so much for helping me decide on the Sony
RX100 V. I bought it and should be getting it in the mail today. This is
going to by my main family shooter for on the go, and my do it all
camera and video shooting for on the quick, restaurants, random parks,
just my all around go to camera.
However, I am looking for VIDEO now. I was looking hard at the X53
and X100, but then I go to thinking that if I am going to spend that
kind of money on a video camera, why not just buy a super high quality
camera that can record video too! Get two for one. I am sure lots of
    people have done this.
I am liking 4K high quality, and the ability to shoot for long
periods of time with it, without heating problems. The RX100 V will be
great for that short term shot for sure, but if I want something longer I
will need the video camera or camera that is video as well.
Thus is why I am here.
My main question is should I buy the a6500 or the a99ii? I watched a
video on TH-cam and the a99ii looks like it blew the a6500 out of the
water as far as video quality. The a6500 does seem good though. I have
just heard that the mount system is better on the a6500 and will be
supported for longer and with more lens as opposed to the A mount of the
    a99ii.
I am also thinking that if I want that perfect family shot I could
always bring out the big guns of the a99ii or a6500 and take the shot
when we have time, record longer videos and just have a really nice
camera and video camera as well.
I mean am I crazy for thinking this way? Should I just buy the x53 for videos and keep the RX100 for Stills?
Please let me know what you guys think because you have been very
helpful, but I am thinking of having this setup for my new family for
    years and years to come:
    RX100 V
    a99ii
And one of these lens unless you recommend better:
Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA lens or Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T Zoom Lens
Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

It's really an APS-C camera designed to sell full frame lenses as Sony has done very little to expand their APS-C lens lineup. So it's likely many users will be attaching big lenses to a small camera, negating much of the compact benefit. I was surprised at how little improvement there was in still-image quality over the A6000. Seems technology has stalled a bit in high ISO performance for APS-C sensors.

Jordan, Re: the headphone jack; if you are using an HDMI monitor with this camera you get audio out into the monitor and most of the monitors have headphone jacks. Even the inexpensive Aputure VS2 Fine HD gives you on screen audio level display and a headphone jack for monitoring. Makes the A6x00 series useable as ":A" cameras. Best, Kirk Tuck

If you compare this to the APS-C competition from Canon, Nikon, and Fuji, I'd say Sony is closer hardware-wise to what most video shooters want. 4K, IBIS, and touchscreen. Their shortcomings should be able to be fixed in the next major revision, whereas the competition has a long way to go for hardware. No 4K for Canon, no IBIS for any of the others. With the rate Sony puts out new hardware, I think they'll get there long before any of the others. I could wish for Fuji, though; their lens selection and color is good stuff.
I still have high hopes for the GH5, even though it's an m43 sensor. The expected/anticipated video features just seem like they're going to override the sensor size deficiencies (I hope).

I'm curious about the 120 fps video. The Sony press release mentioned a "full pixel readout" for 1080p120. Does it now look as clean as 1080p60, even when slowed down? Also the S & Q settings. Previously if you wanted to shoot time lapses you had to seperately purchase an app from Sony, are there any pros and cons of S & Q vs the Time Lapse App?

You know about this overheating :) the lens is important in that stuff. I have used my A7r with MF lenses a lot for video and it did not overheat even once, but last time I mounted SEL90 2.8 macro on it and it was not able to make more than 10min recording it was getting sooo hot... I think there is a connection. So next time - same lens or all lenses MF with no electronic contact when testing overheating :)

Curious why the lack of a headphone jack makes it a "B" camera for you? My first option for recording audio is always an external recorder (Zoom H5 usually). I do a lot of 2 and 3 camera setups so frankly the lack of headphone jack is pretty much a non factor for me.

It's absolutely great with vintage lenses that i prefer. I'm curious about the new tech and 24Mpx from Sony, but not too excited of the prices and lack of lenses. So i'll go for Fuji on the next upgrade, far more appealing to me atleast. The lenses especially, and that's what ultimately counts. But i'll keep on loving the NEX-5N and i'll do me good for a while to come. Gotta buy one extra and convert it to infrared, should be nice.

First of all: great review of a cam that does so many things well. As always the lack of native lenses taylored for the sensor rather than FE (FF) is I think a serious let down. The cam itself seems so solid, IBIS miught not be Oly/Panny level but why should it be the best at everything...Can't have it all. What I find really worrying still is that heat the sensor creates. I know a cam can get a defect under warranty, but do I want to risk it and if it damages the lens like Jordan seems to say..is that covered too? All in all I think especially A6300 is an unacceptable product with its huge problems and if I had an A6300 and saw an A6500 coming by with at least some sort of a solution I would be seriously pissed.
But Sony gets away with it. Where many reviewers where really hard on the oily sensors of the D600 (may be not you guys) and some other brands no one I know of has ever said Sony should address the overheating issue on the A6300. Dpreview even never mentioned it at all (bar in a comparison of many cams, they had one sentence to it whereas far more minor points of other cam are mentioned..time and time again).
Also: is the touchscreen not a swivlescreen? Otherwise you could of course flip it with the screen inwards and not touch a thing. Touchscreen and a very dim screen in 4K, lack of dual card slots and native lenses make Sony a no-go for me.

In the overheating-test with the 2 a6300 and 3 a6500, do you know what firmware you where using? Did the a6300 have v2.0 or had it not been released yet? I'm trying to tell the differens between a6300 and a6500 regarding the overheat-problem or if they are the same with the firmware 2.0 in the a6300?

Thank you for the great review as always! I am upgrading from a6000 to a6500. I don't care about video but doing a lot of street photography. It's crazy Sony is still not producing a small fast zoom as the Panasonic 12-35 f.28 (cheap 600 euro) ... what the sense to buy a smal camera as 6500 if using adapters an giant lenses you get a giant combo ?

i have a technical question regarding external microphones.
is it possible to use some splitter cable when connecting a mic to the camera, so that you can plug in headphones to the extra end of the cable?
or perhaps there are some external microphones that support headphone monitoring directly?

For a video and stills shooter getting their first mirrorless camera, would you recommend the a6500 or the a6300? Is the ibis really worth the extra cost as I lean more towards the video side of things? (The extended buffer is nice but I don't think I'll really use it.)

Hello! So I'm looking for a camera that could shoot almost anything. I believe I'd be using it for street photography mostly but I really want to give astrophotography a try. I can't decide if I should get a dslr or mirrorless? I don't mind splurging a bit just as long as it's under $2000. I was looking at the nikon D7200 or the Sony a6300/6500. What would your recommendation be? Really hope you could help and thank you for your time!

Does the touch-focus work on the touchscreen, with the MC-11 adapter attached (or metabones, or Sony's own LA-EA3/EA4)?
