My go to for solo RPG is Ironsworn and Ironsworn Starforged by Shawn Tomkin. A Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) system that played akin to group RPG, well they can also played in group. In the vanilla version you take perilous journey in a low fantasy world and in starforged you journey through the stars.
I'm just now discovering the world of solo/party rpg games and your videos have always been such a wonderful source of inspiration and sources! Excited to see what's coming next!
There's also, for MÖRK BORG, Solitary Defilement, which is a complete solo conversion that only requires the core book (though there's benefits to owning Heretic and Feretory to flesh out the solo play) and I can't recommend it enough. Solitary Defilement might be my favourite way to play solo ttrpgs which is saying something, as I ADORE solo gaming. Puttin' on some doom metal and sitting down to a journal with pen in hand to write some nasty little ruinous scum careening towards a brutal end is so much fun.
A little solo rpg I loved was Artifact. I played on a sleepless night, no dice needed. And the artificat and lore you play can be added to your regular campaign as well!
Really cool list, it had some games that I will check out in depth later. Also wanted to add an another cosy game to the list: Iron Valley - a Stardew Valley inspired hack of Ironsworn, that retains the cosy vibes of Stardew Valley, while implemented with the excellent solo rules of Ironsworn.
I've just started looking into Solo RPGs as sometime those game nights fall through or your just chilling on a rainy Sunday - and you've given me so many options and ideas here so many thanks - have a great weekend :)
Having been wanting to try solo RPGs for ages, but didn't have a clue where to start - this video is the first of yours I've watched and you kick it off with an RPG inspired by a Becky Chambers book! SOLD!! One of my absolute favourite SF authors. I'll start with For Small Creatures Such As We for sure, but the cosy RPGs all sound great too, so I've got plenty to get stuck into for a while. Many thanks for all the recommendations - fantastic video! 😀
Can I just say, this is one of the most gorgeously produced videos I've seen in the TTRPG space - all the different sets and outfits that matched each genre were so good, and I love the whole vibes-based chapter system. I think I'm gonna HAVE to check out Void 1680 AM after this!
Thanks for this, fantastic reccomendations! Another halloweeny solo rpg is thousand year old vampire, i'm a huuuge fan of that one, replayability factor is super high
So excited for this channel! Thank you TH-cam algorithm! The different sets are great! I'd love to see a video on board games you recommend for people who don't do well with a ton of rules, but still want to have fun!
if you play VOID 1680 AM, you can submit your playthrough to Bannerless Games. He'll broadcast it on his TH-cam channel and, as an extra cool bonus, on the AM radio station in his garage :) Thanks for highlighting my personal fave and so many other gems!
Wow. There are a ton of solo rpgs out there that I was unaware existed. Thanks for the heads up. In case you were still looking, there's a great solo engine for Mork Borg called Solitary Defilement. It's got straightforward mechanics based on IronSworn that work really well.
There's an interesting adjacent area to explore: "gamebooks" like Fabled Lands, DestinyQuest, and Legendary Kingdoms. Where do gamebooks end and solo RPGs begin? 🤔
Awesome recommendations, thank you a lot! I've just started 'Alice's Nightmare in Wonderland' (where you 'read a novel' and get to points of actions, and what you choose alters the story. And there are battles ;) ) and I basically play it with my friends, where I read the story and they get immersed by choosing if they pick up a certain object (with consequences) or which door they go through and so on. Checking your books out to see what we can do after this one!
Now you should do a video on the opposite games, solo wargames. There are a surprising number of solo and co-op miniature wargames out there and more coming out all the time. Many of them, like 5 parsecs from Home, 5 leagues from the Borderland, and Rangers of Shadowdeep, have lots of RPG elements that form an emerging story as you fight various battles.
Likewise on picking by genre, though ideally mechanics that help support the themes of that genre to take some of the workload off me - for solo - or whoever's running - for group - (which, if I'm picking, also likely me. And since most games play nicely with tools such as Mythic GME, there's also a chance that a group game will become a solo campaign for me) Hoping I'll find more time for solo play between my PbP games, the Animon Story campaign I'm running, and the monthly one-shots for a TTRPG book club when my current writing project wraps up and I don't have to hack my brain and turn it into something 'productive' to get back to that.
As far as adapted group games go, I've started to collect D&D 5e compatible solo games like Domain of the Deathless King, Obvious Mimic solos (Wolves of Langston, Crystals of Z'leth, Secret of Oki Island), Pacesetter Games solos (Into the Unknown, Legacy of the Green Flame), and the T.A. Gray solo Festival of Tombs.
I think Forbidden Lands and Twilight 2000 are Free League's best solo games. Twilight has solo rules in the box set ready to go and Forbidden has solo rules in the Book of Beasts.
Glad to see you post DiceBreaker! Sucked that it went away.
I just saw your video and was like, "Solo RPGs? Those exist?" and now I've bought three of them to try out because they seem SO INTERESTING.
So excited for this channel! Your coverage of indie rpgs is top notch!
As someone who has been wanting to get into Solo RPGS but had absolutely no idea where to start - thank you!!

Although I used it mostly as a writing tool, I love IronSworn. What a fantastic system.
I've seen really good things about Ironsworn! - Maddie

Still hoping to cover all things tabletop and if there's a particular thing you want to hear about let us know!

I absolutely love The Broken Cask as a solo RPG. Running a fantasy tavern! So cosy! Very demure.
Very mindful 😚
I am SO late to comment on this, but thank you so much for mentioning Anamnesis! What a honor to be thought of alongside these incredible games.
Of course! Couldn't have a solo RPGs list and not mention you at some point!
@5:30 I have that deck! Awesome suggestions, and I am SO happy Anna Blackwell is listed, Apocatheria is AMAZING

Came here to say the same thing. Max Moon does great shit!
I was just singing the praises of Solitary Defilement too. It's my favorite solo system.
That name is SO GOOD - Wheels
A little solo rpg I loved was Artifact. I played on a sleepless night, no dice needed.

Ahh is that the Jack Harrison one? Everything from him seems great!
@@just4funshow that one exactly!

I've been really wanting to try Iron Valley! I think a cosy list needs to be in the works - Maddie

I used to work on the digital adaptions of the Sorcery! series way back when, for inkle games. They've got a special place in my heart :) - Wheels

Ahh thank you! I had to film it over multiple days but that meant I could get a bit more creative with it and glad it paid off
wow, those setting and wardrobe changes must have taken a long time to get done. thank you for going the extra mile to make this video so perfect!
Hey Maddie, great picks! Thanks for mentioning The Soloist substack!!! Looking forward to more videos!
Of course! Am a huge fan of your work
Your Substack is just AMAZING.

I loved Apothecaria and didn’t realise the maker had done other games, will have to check out Small Creatures! Thanks for a great video
All of them are amazing so you're in for a treat! There's even Apawthecaria where you get to be little animals 🥺
@@just4funshow that sounds adorable!! 😍

I absolutely adore TYOV, talked about it to death back on Dicebreaker - Wheels
I have been wanting to check out more solo games Thanks for the list and links. I am so excited. ❤
A great selection, and this is an awesome video for such a new channel!
Incredibly well made, and great suggestions!
Ah, this is where you are now. Awesome! Glad to have found you again. Been meaning to invest in a couple of new solo rpgs so this is super exciting.
So excited for this channel! Thank you TH-cam algorithm! The different sets are great! I'd love to see a video on board games you recommend for people who don't do well with a ton of rules, but still want to have fun!
We've got a board game list coming this week and a couple are pretty light on the rules
Oh hell yeah!

Amazing! Which one did you go for? 👀
Great vid!! Koriko is so fun!
I love wheels in the reflection at 1:10 getting in the fridge lol
Thanks for the suggestions. Just bought Koriko as a gift to my wife!
Thank you so very much for featuring VOID 1680 AM among this great list of solo games!
Subscribed. I'll share the video around a bit. :)
Eric Bloat said you interviewed him once. Cool. Small world.
Great to see you again! I'm still incredibly sad about Dicebreaker and Storybreakers!

I picked up Solitary Defilement but I didn't get around to reading it. I'm a big fan of Ironsworn (Starforged) so now I really want to try it!!!
So many of those sound intriguing and fun. Koriko is the one that has been on my wish list though. I love Kiki's delivery service.
Amazing, i hope see more solo rpg content :)

a timely post as I decided to focus on Solo RPGs for SoloSept and Colostle is on that list ,
As far as adapted group games go, I've started to collect D&D 5e compatible solo games like Domain of the Deathless King, Obvious Mimic solos (Wolves of Langston, Crystals of Z'leth, Secret of Oki Island), Pacesetter Games solos (Into the Unknown, Legacy of the Green Flame), and the T.A. perfect, I've been trying to find some solo RPGs and it's cool to get some recommendations for ones that use tarot too. Thanks!
Hostile Solo for me all the way, gritty Alien-style horror in the dark voids of space.
I think Forbidden Lands and Twilight 2000 are Free League's best solo games. Twilight has solo rules in the box set ready to go and Forbidden has solo rules in the Book of Beasts.
Please more solo gaming content. What about a solo rpg play through?
Have you had a look at Starship Scavengers from Grinning Frog… a small UK company? This is a solo sci-fi rpg,
Where did you get that cardigan with the cherries Maddie? My gf needs one 😊
It was just an Asos one! There are lots of cute fruit cardigans around online 🍒
nice!!
I can’t find Better Strangers at ALL! Has it been deleted??
There's a link the video description that'll take you there!
@@just4funshow oh goodness, thank you! I don’t know why I didn’t check there lol!
You don't have to spin your channel you are doing.
Every time i hear about solo rpg's all i can think is that they aren't a game but instead a creative writing exercise
You should try one!
She is so fit! ❤
Most of these aren't ttrpgs. They're journaling games and quite boring ones at that.
