Hey sir! I have the same issue with the door doesnt close up at the top. Im interesting in getting that magnet but the link in the description doesnt work. Could u help me out thanks
I'm in the process of figuring out what my options are for displaying some high priced figures. I just wanted to say I really appreciate the effort you've made in sharing your upgrade ideas! Well thought out and executed. Meticulous to a fault and very informative. A+++++ It's nice to see others who are as obsessive like myself....I mean that in a good way! Thanks buddy! Cheers!
I may have to check into that extra magnet for the top as well. After I have applied the dust proof weather strips....the door is not closing all way due to the strip getting in the way.
LOL. The biggest shock was seeing what kind of models you are displaying! Not expected at all. I am doing something similar, though I prefer to use the pre-made/pre-wired LED lights, even if they are more money (and I like mine warm white to fit well in my living room and not be so jarring at night). I plan to join two of these together to make a double-detolf and increase available space on the shelves. I really like your extra shelves idea - I wonder if Ikea sells replacement parts for these? I will be displaying diecast planes.
I used hot glue on the corners of the glass where it touches the clamps. It protects the glass, keeps it from moving/slipping, and is easily removed. Nice work!
Thank you for sharing, i am planning for the same thing. However, I’ll prefer to use different set of led, I don’t want to deal with manually turning them. I found a set on Amazon with app controls for scheduling, and possibly dim levels, about $30. Have fun!
this video is absolutely amazing, was thinking about buying the detolf to display some figures and thought there wasnt enough shelfs inside, the upgrades you did is just great now i have to pick one of these up for sure!!
Hi great job, I too would like to light up the shop window. But how did you manage to connect the individual strips? Did you use the classic 2 pin connectors or did you solder them? Hello and thanks
you did it cleanly, personally I used it for my sega city game showcase (which you can see in my videos) but your idea of cable ties makes me want to improve all that!
I decided to go with Hoover LED puck lights. They’re easy to install and you can dim or change the light colors. Bought them from Amazon for $30 bucks for 5 lights and a remote.
Ikea cases seem like a great deal. But I find their cases to be kinda flimsy. The shelf uses a thin gage wire frame. It's very fragile. I've seen collectors do wonderful things wilt their Ikeas cases. Wish they had a bigger and sturdier one.
This is by far one of the most beneficial videos ive ever seen on tube great explaining great shots great job sir🙏🏻 just one question have u thought bout putting strips alonf the back portion of the shelves behind where the figureswill stand?
Another tip. Rather then drilling a hole one the base. Why not installing the top up side down on the bottom . That works too. Only need to predrill some holes for the plastic base.
I use the foam weatherstrip for my detolfs. I think I need to try the pile weatherstrip. The issue with foam one is when opening and closing it rubs against the glass is cost friction. Hope this gives more give...
In my experience the pile weatherstrip does have more give. Expect to still have some friction as you want it to have a pretty tight seal to keep the dust out.
Sunlight causes collectables to fade because of the UV radiation. The LED lights are completely safe and won’t cause collectables to fade or change color
Yep. I’ve opted out of using these. Surprised they don’t have a plexiglass option. I just can’t take the risk with glass living in an earthquake area. My collection is worth way too much to risk it.
www.amazon.com/Brush-Excluder-Adhesive-Strip-Window/dp/B01C2IRTHY hey i found the dust pile stuff i live in america so it may be diffrent for you if ur in another country... hope this helps u man/woman!!!!
Do the glass side panels on your detolf bow otuwards towards the middle? So the gap is really small at the top and bottom but wider towards the middle?
Ahh okay at least I don't have a faulty cabinet. I've got the same stuff you use to seal it from dust, but because of the bowing it's hard to close the door with the brush pile strip on. Thanks for the reply.
Cool video but would've liked to have seen you actually soldering and the attaching to the other wiring. For those that are not familiar with that type of work
Great video helps me alot ill be out to buy the extra glass and clamps tomorrow not enough room for a ll my models in the 2 I baught and built and keep buying more kits thanks
Really thinking about getting one of these to display a autographed wrestling belt. My concern is since the belt is leather and not flat on the front plate is there enough room that the front plate can sit at the front of the glass hanging off a bit and still close?
There is about 1 inch space between the front door and the glass shelf, and the same in the back. So front to rear you could fit something approx. 17" deep inside.
SS454LS6 got my case set up however no one at Home Depot could find what was used to keep dust out. They refered me to a molding used for roofing that is putty like. Its giving a real on the bottom but I need stronger magnets to get door to shut on top and bottom. twitter.com/Gopher75/status/898291961781559297
I had to order mine through a local glass shop with custom dimensions. Tempered glass takes longer to make and is a bit more expensive, but I think a good upgrade in terms of safety. I highly recommend taking your own measurements as these Detolf frames can vary between each other.
Thanks for the tips. I got the same stuff, but with the magnet how did you get it to stay up there? Did you drill your own holes or is there an easier way?
Nice tutorial on the lightning of your case, question though the case and shelves seems wider than I’ve seen for Detolf cases (I own several already) and mine are square vs yours (which look more rectangular). Is that just something with the video or is it a different model Detolf case?
I recommend 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch. I'm not sure how thin or thick they make it. Too thin and it wont seal, too thick and it will look crappy and you may have clearance issues with the door opening/closing.
i was looking for that pile you're using in my local store, but they only have the foam one, not the brush, is it safe to use that instead? kinda afraid if the foam make it more air tight, will that affect my figures? thanks
I suppose it could depend how soft the foam is. I personally would not use the foam as I believe it would act more like a seal than a flexible dust barrier.
Depends where you put the glass. The distance between the factory glass shelves is about 38 cm. Remove a shelf, and you could have 76 cm. Remove all the shelves and you could fit something 152 cm tall in it.
I live in Texas and I just got a Detolf I went to Home Depot and they couldn’t find the pile stuff you used in the video to keep the dust out is there another link because when I tried clicking the link it didn’t show any picture and the associate couldn’t find it the closest thing was some weather stripping adhesive foam strip about the same thickness as the pile you showed in your video
SS454LS6 what is the size of pile did you use because your right it does show a bunch of results on Amazon thanks , but i just need to know the correct size please
Different kinds of weather stripping can work. I find the pile works great to seal doors or panels that may slide or swing open as the pile flexes, bends, and squishes quite freely. Something like foam strips may cause an obstruction on the hinge side when opening the door.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I was looking at this product for holding miniatures and while watching this video I too thought it looked wider than what I'm seeing on Ikea's site. Odd. :)
So I've seen reports of these failing and the glass breaking. From what I understand it's from tightening the top down too much. Did you have any issues with that? Also great video :)
The factory Ikea Detolf cabinet has 3 shelves + the base at the bottom. So with 1 figure on each shelf, yes you could put all 4 figures in the cabinet. If you mean 4 on each shelf, I couldn't tell you because I don't know how wide your figures are. The shelves are about 15"x15", but that can vary a bit.
I'm lost, I got 3/16 and there is still a gap on the side. Also I'm not clear as to where you put the inside one where door swings. Maybe a tip good sir?
I put the weather stripping down the front edge of the side glass. If I were to do it again, I'd probably lay it 1/8-1/4" farther back. If you are getting a gap, is your side glass bowed out? This Ikea glass isn't the thickest/straightest glass, so it has a tendency to bow out causing gaps, especially if you over tighten the frame bolts.
Also if your door doesn't shut or only the bottom magnet works and the top feels loose you unfortunately put the cabinet together wrong. The plastic strips that hold the glass should fit flush and the glass should slide all the way in. Don't over tighten the top screw either if done correctly nothing should clank and the cabinet should be sturdy then the door will close perfectly its a huge pain but follow the stupid pictures too it helps alot. Good luck

I wonder how this case would work for vintage wood fishing bait's, if I could add more glass shelves? Thanks, John
I think the shelves would work for anything. Yes you can add more shelves, as I did in the video

Like the door seal idea. Too bad Ikea don't sell parts for extra shelves. I will triple the shelve for 1:43 display.
Hi great job,
I too would like to light up the shop window.
But how did you manage to connect the individual strips?
Did you use the classic 2 pin connectors or did you solder them?

I soldered them.

Wow, well done mod!
you did it cleanly, personally I used it for my sega city game showcase (which you can see in my videos) but your idea of cable ties makes me want to improve all that!
Great work, where to get the extra glass? Thanks
im confused on how the wiring was done, is there anyway to do a quick close up on how yours was achieved? thx

Very nice clean installation of the leds. Compared to what I did lol.

Where are the extra glass shelves from?
So want to keep it simple like this for my old caterpillar trucks from childhood ..
The pile weather strip seems to be something I might looking into. I have the regular weather strip but it feels a little thick.

Where do u get the extra shelves?
Hello my friend, could you please tell me what was the scale of the F1 Ferrari model placed in the Detolf? Thank you in advance!

I tried to click on the line for the pile, but it no longer exist. Could you tell me the measurement of the width of the pile?
3/16
Thanks man for making this video i was kinda of stressing on which glass display to use

Does the pile have a sticky side? Also, do you tape it near the edge of the glass?
Yes it has a sticky side. I taped mine right on the edge. I think having it inset about 1/8-1/4" may make opening the door a bit easier.

I couldn't understand you right did you say "drill a hole"?
if so where? at the base on the bottom?
yeah he drilled at the bottom
Great tutorial!! how did you line up the LEDs? i know you said you drilled a hole at the bottom for wires.

Is there anyway you could post some pictures of where exactly to play the pile strips I know it should be obvious but I want to be sure lol
I put mine right at the edge of the glass. If I were to do it again, I might go inwards about 1/16".

Nice tutorial on the lightning of your case, question though the case and shelves seems wider than I’ve seen for Detolf cases (I own several already) and mine are square vs yours (which look more rectangular). Is that just something with the video or is it a different model Detolf case?
I think it is an illusion. It is square.
Nice and informative video. What are the dimensions of the tempered glass shelves? Thank you!
they were about 15x15, but I highly recommend measuring for your specific case as the tolerances vary a lot.
Thanks for the info! This helps a lot.
Would 7 funky pops fit shoulder to shoulder in box in the case?
It's approx 15" x 15" sheets of glass, do some measuring and see if they'd fit because I have no idea unfortunately.
Are there certain dimensions of the Pile I need to be aware of? In other words is their a certain thickness so that it covers all the edges?
I recommend 3/16 to 1/4 of an inch. I'm not sure how thin or thick they make it. Too thin and it wont seal, too thick and it will look crappy and you may have clearance issues with the door opening/closing.
Is the pile on the door, too, or is it only on the top, sides and bottom of display case?
There is no pile on the door.
What gauge wiring are you running?
That's a nice case, thanks for sharing.
Would it be better to just buy another Detollf case to get the extra glass shelf instead of having to custom order extra glass ?
It's about the same price. In some situations it could make sense.
i bought 4 mm thick acrylic sheets for mine cut to measure online cost £30 approx, that for 4 shelves.
i was looking for that pile you're using in my local store, but they only have the foam one, not the brush, is it safe to use that instead? kinda afraid if the foam make it more air tight, will that affect my figures? thanks

about $20 per sheet locally.
wow!amazing creativity
Where did you get more shelves?
Local glass makers.
Nice video! Is the Ferrari F1 a minichamps or hot wheels?
Hotwheels
thx
won't weather strip work? for keeping the dust out?
Different kinds of weather stripping can work. I find the pile works great to seal doors or panels that may slide or swing open as the pile flexes, bends, and squishes quite freely. Something like foam strips may cause an obstruction on the hinge side when opening the door.
SS454LS6 okay, thanks! for the info.
is it just me, or does your Detolf cabinet look slightly wider compared to the squarely looking case that ikea sells?
I think just an illusion.
I was thinking the exact same thing. I was looking at this product for holding miniatures and while watching this video I too thought it looked wider than what I'm seeing on Ikea's site. Odd. :)
When you add the extra shelves it looks like that.
So I've seen reports of these failing and the glass breaking. From what I understand it's from tightening the top down too much. Did you have any issues with that? Also great video :)
Nope.

Can you dim the lights?
I imagine if you put the power into a dimmer switch of some sort you could. Without that, you cannot. It's on or off.
Does this detolf case fit 1/6 figures. 12 inches high?! Thank you
The factory shelf spacing is high enough to fit 12+ inch items. If you added shelves, you would not be able to fit those items.

Thanks. 3/16"
THANK YOU so much for this video!
Your welcome. Thanks for watching.

I had them made at a local glass shop.
It cost me about $20 per sheet of glass. So relatively speaking that was expensive.
I going to but Deteft for my Transformers Studio Series.
Going to purchase this to display my Supreme accessories, should look really nice 👍🏼
Too bad the wieght limit on these shelves are 8 pounds each?? Statue collectors are outta luck with these cabinets
Sure they are cheap but sadly there no Ikeas with in 150 miles of me and the shipping would cost $350...
