      He's pretty solid.
      2 Undying creatures with Yawgs and a Blood artist/lifegain effect. Gerald's Messenger is the best.
      Loop the Undying triggers‚ draw deck your entire deck‚ while stabilizing with lifegain (Zulaport or Blood artist is ideal)and black rituals.
      Discard your hand with an Ulamog to loop again and drain the table‚ it's very similar to Gitrog in that regard.
      Apart from that‚ run black hate en masse and just about any mono black combos can fit right in (reanimator tricks are still amazing and work well with the Ineffable) and ironically enough Yawgmoth works wonders with Walkers‚ especially Liliana of the Dark Realms hiting her ultimate right away‚ which is just magnificent.
      Special mentions to breath of Phyrexia and Gate to Phyrexia. Not only are they flavorful but are super useful artifact killers in what amounts to an aristocrats combo deck.

    Update: So my Urza deck is powerful without the lockout effects. No Orbs, no Trinisphere, the only thing I lock people out of is extra mana from Blinkmoth Urn and extra cards from Howling Mine. Plus it opens the avenues for politics with said cards. Now, is it still powerful. Oh, yes. Have won more than lost with it in testing. Today I get to play with it for real having busted the card in a pack last night. Super excited. Thank you for helping me craft a version of the deck that is good to play and good (for the most part) to play against.

      guillaume gerotto I always encourage people to build fun versions of decks. It’s like with Oathbreaker gaining popularity, so many people go straight to talking about Ral, Storm Conduit. Infinite combos just don’t feel like fun to me. I like peoples’ life totals gradually being reduced and not, “oh, and now I win.”

    I appreciate your point about making a fun deck over a tier 1 powerful deck. That's a super valid and very important point. Thanks very much for the informative video.
    I think I'll give Urza a miss, personally. He does just seem to be the 'win with me, promtly' commander and I'm not all big on that. Also a toned-down mono blue combo deck just isn't the sort of deck I'm all about.

    Great video. It addresses my exact problem with Urza; I really wanna like him but it's almost impossible not to fall into the boring paradox auto-win. He's so powerful and at the same time so restricted. If he was a couple bucks go ahead, build a jank deck, but he's not cheap and you end up paying a lot of cash for a boring deck, or a fun deck that never wins. Your take of "a bit of stax, a bit of thopters" seems really fun and out of the expected. And it doesn't use the soon to be very very banned paradox engine. Kudos.

    Similar to yours with the Wide and Tall strategy was EXACTLY my idea. I have been waiting for an urza card since the first time I read through the Thran novel when I was in college. The spin I am putting on it is throwing in some extra turns and time-manipulation effects for that tolarian flavor. I am going to popping a few treasures from my freshly broken Teferi Planeswalker EDH deck (including maybe Teferi himself) And who knows maybe a Blind Seer if I still have one ;)

    People saying Urza will be banned make no sense to me personally. He's certainly tier 1, no question asked. But here's the thing. Is he truly better then every other tier 1 commander that currently exists? And by a good margin? In my eyes, no, no he isn't. I don't think he's so much better then Tymna-thrasios for example. I think he's at the same level of power as those commanders.
    So we should not have to worry about building Urza if we intend to play him with other people who also use tier 1 or 2 decks that are really powerful. As long as you also carry a fun deck on you, it should be fine. I'm building Urza so I stand a better chance against my friends who do have very powerful decks. But I also have my Sram deck if we aren't using those power level of commanders.

    • @regaleagle6533
      @regaleagle6533 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man swan song isn't infinite by itself. Once you have infinite mana with urza you can play your whole deck. So you need swan song plus a variety of other cards that can get a card back from your graveyard or shuffle your graveyard back and keep playing it. Lots of things can do this but swan song is popular because it is so useful prior to going infinite. Personally I would just throw in like a lab maniac or jace so you win when you run out of cards or blue sun zenith or something. BSZ also useful outside going infinite and is reusable to kill each opponent once you do. I think he just didn't explain it because a bunch of difference CEDH decks already use it in a similar way maybe?

    • @derekwalter4238
      @derekwalter4238 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@regaleagle6533 thanks for the response. So, say you go infinite with dramatic scepter, then you need some way to recur swan song from the graveyard while looping through your deck. In theory you'd need something like an elixir of immortality and then what? You just want to loop the elixir and counter one of your own things with swan song, and just repeat that infinitely? I've heard other people talking about making infinite tokens with swan song before urza was even a thing, I've never had it explained to me or been able to figure out how it works tho. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

    I’m making a really powerful version for sure, Urza deserves the best. I am gonna take a peek at the cedh list but I already put together a sweet combo list for him. True all of these combos have always been around but Urza like Breya (my favorite commander) can have many different styles of decks. They are perfect combo enablers.

    I think this artifacts matter aggro build looks like so much fun. I think you are right, many will build him like this oppressive control shell. So If this list isn't very pricy I'll maybe buy it, but first I want to buy something really evil and mean. Mono Black Mikaeus the unhallowed combo. Everyone knows how it works, you go infinite with so many cards in the deck and when one of your combo pieces is in the command zone its kinda broken. or mayby Yawgmoth infect, thats always good right? the thing with Yawgmoth is, Mikaus goes so well with him that he's in the deck too.

  • @mrTjstephens1

    Mixing the two aggressive with stax pieces. I play in a mixed meta. The power level is all over the place so I want to allow people to play by toning down the stax elements and limiting the combos. I get the feeling even then. I think he will be extremely powerful.

  • @SakuyaFM4
    @SakuyaFM4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I honestly don't know if I want to run Stax, because while I will have to play against it at some time (like last week in my local tournament), most of the decks people run in my local meta is fair. maybe I'll run a bunch of Artifact discounters and run Temporal Fissure to make it kinda stax but not really.

    My urza list is going more spell slinging heavy. Gonna try to use it like i've seen the jeskai narset used with like 6+ extra turn spells, lots of 1 mana draw spells, lots of cheerios and 1 mana artifacts with general value. 2-3cmc artifacts are more creatures with value and ramp, gonna use Sai, Lab Maniac, new Jace as one win con. Maybe traumatize and Mirrodin Beseiged as another. Then new ugin, new narset, tezz seeker, new and old karn, the artifact tutor mages, snapcaster mage, the 1cmc bird that scrys off historic spells. Lots of X card draw, new finale just not paying the x=10 to get 9 cards off 11 mana is feasible. Windfall, Jace's achivist, Ponder, Opt, Fact of Fiction, Preordain, dig through time, future sight, treasure cruise. Neurok Stealthsuit is pretty cool to add in to protection suite of lightning greaves and swiftfootboots which can all mana rock as well as pay for activations of eachother when all out.

    Tapping Static Orb, etc, at the end of opponents turn - how is that useful? You start your turn by untapping everything anyway so Orb will be active... How does the timing work here exactly?

    • @michaelwong5102
      @michaelwong5102 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well during your opponents turn, since static orb is untap, so your opponents can only untap up to 2 permanents. If you activate Urza first ability then you can tap static orb during your opponents end step and product 1 blue mana. Since before your untap step your static orb is not untap so you untap all your permanents not only up to 2. After your untap step, static orb is untap again so your opponents untap up to 2 permanents again assume they don’t have a way to tap or remove that static orb

    The problem with me is that my playgroup and I don't really see eye to eye. I enjoy competitive decks and want to build them. My playgroup does not, preferring to stick to their own rigid idea of what fun is.
    That is to say, jank and "fair Magic." So I'd really like to push the power on Urza, but I'm limited in terms of how strong I can allow him to be since the group doesn't like that kind of power (or doesn't understand it).
    I don't know for sure how they'll respond to what I build, considering that they don't see the same power that I do in Urza, but... They have gotten really worked up over a Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca deck in the past so I don't have high hopes.

    Urza combo ls just a memnarc combo list with like 5 cards changed. It's faster, but I dont think it's better than teferi. Teferi doesnt need infinite mana to win. There's a thousand decks that just win with infinite mana. The stacks deck looks dumb, though

    • @HugHeist
      @HugHeist 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont get me wrong, it's going to be a great deck, but not tier one. I mean, I've seen great memnarc decks and this is just more powerful memnarc. Yawgmoth is kinda flying under the radar. Urza is probably stronger, but Yawgmoth combos easily as well. 2 undying creatures and you have a yawgmoth's bargain, you know, the second best card draw in the game, only behind ancestral recall. I play mikaeus and I think hes a better commander, but Yawgmoth is in the 99.
