- This incredible relic of 1980’s magic and glam remains in its original state, which is quite rare in New York City. Would you move in as-is, or renovate it to look like everything else in the city?

Great news! If you make a purchase from any link above, my channel earns a small affiliate commission from the site.
What's MOST important is what is NOT mentioned here! 1.) This unit has monthly carrying costs of $7,240! - you read that right - taxes and maintenance are $7,240 A MONTH!; and 2.) the reason for this ridiculously high monthly charge is that this is a LAND LEASE building - this means that the condo/co-op does not own the land it is physically located on, which is a horror show financially. The first rule of buying a condo/co-op in NYC is - make sure the building you're buying into owns the land it is built on top of!!
I came looking for this comment. When Pam quoted 900k purchase price I immediately thought something was up. I was expecting 2 to 3 Million.
Wow, that's insane!
Thank you!!! I was ready to sell my condo and move in! My monthly condo charges are ridiculously low We have a huge garden and other amenities too
Love the lay out. Love the kitchen. Beats my galley kitchen Too many mirrors
Noted. Thank you. Who knew!
@@tsgormanMe too. I thought it quite reasonable.
I bought a house in L.A back in 2013 and it was as if the time stopped in 1990. The guy who owned it died in 1990 and everything inside was exactly as he left it. Nothing was disturbed or moved. Even cars in the garage. I changed hardly anything. It's just so damn cool.
That sounds like there is a story to that place. Why was it empty for 23 years?
@@gyllenspetzfamily7993 dude died in 1990 and had no heir. Well there were some relatives who took their argue to court about it, but it took so long that in the end they spent more than it was worth so they sold the house to me with everything inside.

Some stuff, but not everything.
Cash! Cash! Cash! Cash!
Renovating this apartment would absolutely be criminal!!
Nobody can improve on this outstanding design. Changing it would be criminal.
I'd change nothing. And I'm willing to be that those appliances actually work. Not like today's crap.
@@earlofsmegRight? you got damn hot/cold knobs hard to find that’s frustrating enough
In some of those multiple million dollar apartments downtown with the fabulous kitchens with all the gadgets….but no one cooks. Too many great restaurants at that price level and otherwise they ‘order in’. Though ‘just maybe’ they hire a private chef!!!
The only thing I would change is maybe the flooring in the kitchen, it‘s the only room that looks a little outdated because of the tile and the yellows cabinets/counters
I would move in as-is. But I don’t know if I could go into that mirror room 😂
I don't think poker is a good idea with that ceiling 😂🤔
😂😂
😂
😂😂😂😂
Killjoy
Cash will you ask is there any HOA FEES for any of the properties you visit and let your subscribers know please.
As someone who graduated HS in 82, yes mirrors were everywhere. And if you weren't rich you could buy self sick mirror tiles to cover your walls, mirrors on drawers, and closet doors were usually mirrors too.
I REMEMBER THOSE DAYS. I graduated HS 1979. I was living in Manhattan in 1983- on 72nd & York Ave. ❤❤❤❤
And today....I hate them. Its impossible to keep them finger print and smudge free. You'd have to wear cotton gloves in that closet. But...I'm OCD when it comes to things like that.😂
I would worry that all of the mirrors in this apartment would start crashing down at some point. The adhesive can only hold for so long! I like the apartment, but I hate all of the mirrors.
Those mirrors are permanently attached like the wallpaper common in that era.
@@vicki8261 The cheap ones were plastic - not glass, so when they inevitably fell they didn't break. I remember my Mom had a whole section of them on one wall of the family room. She ended up putting narrow tape on the edges to secure them so it looked like window panes.
That bread box "thing" is a proof box. This apartment is so incredible because the quality and attention to detail are remarkable. Everything is custom....made to order and so disco-elegant.
😂 Disco-elegant! This comment made my day. Thank you.😊
I miss those older dishwashers. They ran like a freight train for about 30 minutes and then were done, and your dishes were always clean! It didn't take an hour and a half like today's dishwashers do.
Mine takes at least 2 hours with the extra heat cycle. It's ludicrous makes a vibrating noise that goes right through you for the whole 2 hours
YES, and washing machines, too! Could get a load done in less than 20 minutes. Today, I just have the cheapest top loader, but they're all "efficient" now, and it takes 45 minutes.
I have the exact dishwasher in this video (Kitchenaid KDS-18), and yes, it's done washing in under 30 minutes.
Last year someone was selling a vintage KitchenAid dishwasher on FB Marketplace. It had sat unused for God-knows-how-long in their basement. The seller was confident it still worked. He noted that it would take two strong men to wrestle it out of the basement and warned that it was something that probably should be trailered instead of being put in the back of a SUV. I don't know what the current value is, but he was selling it for $300.
I really, really wanted it. I hunted down an old owners manual and factory repair manual. I was ready to fix anything wrong with it. Current owners of the same dishwasher wrote glowing reviews about how everything came out clean, no matter how bad the dishes were. The downside was that the dishwashers are very thirsty, but hey, you pick either clean and hassle-free, or efficient. You can't have both. LOL!
He told me he had a couple of potential buyers but would contact me if the sale fell through. Unfortunately I didn't end up getting it, but from time to time I think about it.
European dishwashers take up to 4 hours now for so called "economic" programs
That apartment is perfect I wouldn't change a thing. If I lived there I'd spend all day trying to get in the safe.
Hahaha, you wouldn’t have time, you’d be spending all day polishing mirrors 😱
If it's your property you can just call a locksmith who does safes.
Love Phil. He's so classy. Looks like he belongs in the apartment.
I was thinking the same thing.
You mean Phil Collins 😅
I *LOVE* this apartment! I would move in immediately and change absolutely nothing, it would be like living in an 80s movie or an early episode of Law & Order, with Briscoe and Logan turning up to interview a witness!🤣🤣
It is so classy
Same,I LOVE IT🤩🤩🤩 EXCEPT, I would change that mirror ceiling .....this is really Too much for me! 😛 😆
Same I love it
@@chantaleperron the mirror ceiling is so cool
The ceiling is great for monitoring receding hairlines 😅
I believe that is what used to be the Barbizon Hotel for Women. I lived there for about 6 months when I graduated from college and moved into the city. I loved it there. For $100 a week you got a room, and they took your phone messages while you were in the shower! They had a pool, gym, and library. It was two blocks from Bloomingdale’s and I will always remember how much I loved living there. Years ago and before I lived there, Grace Kelly lived there. It was her first place in the city, too.
Rita Moreno lived there also
@@maddscientist3170 I didn’t know that! Thank you for telling me.
Well this particular building was built in '63 which is long after Grace first moved to NYC and Barbizon
The Barbizon for Woman in the East 60’s and Lexington Ave. was totally renovated in about 2007. I know because we looked at several apartments there. Very nicely finished but because they were hotel rooms originally, the rooms were small. They were renovated to be pied a terre’s for people not necessarily going to live full time. So this probably isn’t the Barbizon.
What fabulous memories!!!
That was fresh out of architectural digest in the 1980's. If I bought that, I wouldn't change a thing.
Cash's best Line of the Day: "Mirrors all around and you can see yourself for miles! The perfect apartment for a narcissist" LOL😝
I sure as HELL wouldn't play cards under that mirrored ceiling!
Or someone who is claustrophobic.
Seriously, I bet all those appliances still work and will last longer than modern ones. I would not change a thing in this apt for at least a year.
My mother's kitchen appliances are from the 60s and still in working order so I'm sure you're correct.
I don't claim to be wealthy or that I live in the lap of luxury like that stunning apartment, but I do have it beat in one respect - my stove is 45 years and it's in such good shape, I just can't part with it! All the burners work along with the oven. I love the knobs, and it even has a clock and built-in timer! They don't make them like that anymore! Great video Cash! I hope someone buys it and appreciates the treasure it is!
THAT… is by far the coolest apartment I have seen on your channel!!! In the 80’s that would have been like the stuff of legends. You’d probably have people like Sam Rothstein living in places like that. Truly amazing and in such a great condition
If i had the money I'd snatch that apartment right after this video ,the only thing that would change is the new ownership, the 80s was my jam .Can't believe it's actually selling for a decent price
I think the price is a steal. I’m still too poor to afford it, but I can see it’s a great deal for Manhattan
Me too! God, do I miss the 80s.
yes a steal alright, on top of the mortgage for that 899k you get to add 7k per month in fees or just 84 grand a year extra@@LifeAfterLosing
I have to say, coming from a designer, who ever did this condo did it in a timeless manor. It’s not for everyone, but it still works with style.
the really great thing about these old appliances from the 70's/80's with the possible exception of the fridge) is that they are always easy to fix. there's no technical need to get them replaced
I keep saying those mirrors and sunken in room are 70's
Yep and they still look immaculate.
Apparently a fridge with no icemaker and the freezer at the top is the simplest and needs the fewest repairs.
This is by far miles better than newer apartments They don't make character and charm like this today. That sofa is sublime, as is that hidden closet. It is a time capsule and must be protected at all costs. I hope the new owner appreciates how cool this place is.
I love the mix of both regular mirrors AND the smoked mirrors. That somehow makes this place just ultimate 80s. The kitchen lighting, the contact paper in the pantry, the track lighting…… takes me back to my childhood and puts a huge smile on my face!! THANK YOU for showing this incredible place! 😀❤️
This is like a time capsule of apartment! This is a place stuck in the '80s, haha. Maybe they can shoot films or tv shows in this place for stories back in the '80s.
I can’t believe how perfectly well preserved this place is. Not a scratch or millimetre of wear and tear. It’s almost bizarre. It’s so perfect it’s like no one has lived there, but no one has abandoned it to disrepair
either.
Cash, it's not old...it's retro. If things are taken care of we can bring the past into the future. Interior design, done well doesn't go out of style; Trends do. If I were in a position to purchase this place, the only thing I'd change are the sheets on the beds! It's way too cool and in perfect condition. My compliments to it's former owners!
I agree. Just a few things would make it feel fresh and keep that cool ass vibe.
Did she say about $900,000 to buy it? I would have thought it would be more. There is so much square feet in that place. I mis-heard something.
@@suseyq4559 The catch is $7,000 in monthly fees + maintenance; the land that the building sits on is leased, not owned by the building
@@bubbledoubletrouble thanks for clearing it up for me. 👍
I would keep the sheets if they haven't been washed since the last occupant died.
My parents dishwasher from 1968! Thanks for the walk down memory lane😊
Phil is the perennial righteous dude and Pam is a very kind woman.
Another winner,Cash.
I would refer to that as a Florida beach condo style. You wouldn't know you were even in New York till you looked out the window. My favorite attribute of this place is all the unexpected angles. Nothing boxey or rectangular. Incredible apartment. Truly.
I ADORE this appartment, and the price is surprisingly right! The ONLY THING: I DONT WANNA BE the ONE WHO CLEAN ALL THOSE MIRRORS in the appartment!!!!
Nb: Pam ALWAYS have NEAT Appartments!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

Absolutely fabulous! The price is amazing. Thank you for showing this to us.❤
What a blast from the past, this was fun to see. Always enjoy seeing Pam & Phil. Reading through the comments was entertaining as well.😃
Love the 80s feel. However, I was shocked that this is going for under $1m in that area. It should go for much more. Looking at the listing I realize why. The maintenance is over $7200 a month, which is way above average for a building like this. This is due to the fact that this coop building is sitting on a land lease which expires in 2099. It is a great apartment and the location is great. You can take advantage of the low price and pay a high maintenance cost if your budget is for a much smaller apartment and your income can afford a larger unit. Either way, I can easily see myself living there and have 80s music playing throughout the apartment. Great video Cash!
No. I can't do $7200 a month just for maintenance
Okay, I was wondering what the catch is, at $900k for an apt in this location and size. So >$7k for monthly maintenance is wild.
Which begs the question, what happens in 2099?
@@653j521 In 2099, the lease has to be renegotiated with whomever owns the land. If the rent goes up, so does the maintenance. The coop can negotiate to buy the land if the owner is willing to sell, but I am sure the cost would be transferred to a further increase in maintenance. If the negotiations fail, the owner of the land can claim the whole building and the units because in a Coop, you own shares allocated to the unit to lease via monthly maintenance and not a deed to own.
That much in maintenance? What are they maintaining for that much
Cash you found my apartment! I LOVE it. Would not change a thing!!!!!! Thanks!😊
I would love to know the backstory on things one. Who lived here. Why is it a time capsule, etc.
yeah theres no way its been vacant 40 years ...
I love this! What a slice of history! Thank you Cash!
First thing in NY actually worth the price. The apartment is retro fantastic! And since I was around in the 80s, yes, mirrors were a big thing...
The maintenance (taxes and coop fees) are > $7k/month. That's BEFORE your mortgage payment. Anytime an apartment price seems too good to be true in NYC, it is! The building is 175 East 62nd in case you're wondering
How much is this place? I didn't watch the whole thing. Thanks
@@larryh4666 well I would move to NYC or New York for that matter even if had the funds.
@@a.nobodys.nobody they said in video sale price $899,000
ahh.. yeah. That was the catch. The price was lower than even smaller apartments in my country/city.@@larryh4666
I was born in 1966 so definitely reliving the 80s with this video. Yes mirrors were a thing, I remember my parents remodeling our house in the 80’s and removing the yellow shag carpet, orange painted walls, and large floral print wallpaper that had been the height of fashion in 1975 and replacing it with quite a few mirrors. Not my style, and those of us of a certain age do not want a bathroom with mirrors in every direction, but it should be preserved as a time capsule.
I am "of a certain age" and do NOT want mirrors in the bathroom ... I quite agree with you!
The mirrors remind me of the ones in the changing rooms at Gertz and Macy's department stores. I'd go in with my mom and upon seeing the two mirrors facing each other I'd make believe I was dancing kicks in a chorus line. Lol!
@@epoelker Did that dressing-room dancing lead to dancing in a chorus line on Broadway? If not, sorry!
@@cathynewyork7918 No! It was just kid fun and a fond memory. ♥️
@@epoelker Aaaah ,,,, too bad! I did not achieve my childhood fantasies either! 🥲
What? 40 years? Now you have my attention....🤩
I think it's more of a pun about the fact that the interior design hasn't changed in 40 years. Not that it hasn't been occupied in that long.
I’d love living there! It would be an awesome experience to keep everything as is. It’s art.
Yes, it's dated, but if everything functions it's very well equipped. But the mirrors would have to go. I imagine that the agents had to call in the cleaners after Cash left because he's such a tactile person. The price seems low for all that square footage, but a buyer has a lot of renovating to do, and I imagine that the monthly building fees are enormous.
Such a cool retro vibe. I wouldn’t change any of it. Cleaning all the mirrors would be a full time job, though.
I swear I think you get funnier with ever vlog..... I love it as always!!!!!! Big thumbs up👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Certainly an interesting appartment. Given the NYC prices for that amount of square footage the price is really good. The charm of this appartment may meet someone not wanting to fo any changes.
The price to buy PLUS $7,240 / month
@@sarasusanobrien whoaa that explains it. those HOA fees are something else.
you're paying max HOA to cover the land lease costs on these buildings@@AthalieM
Playing poker with that mirrored ceiling should be a bit of a challenge ;-) Not even talking about that ceiling in the bedroom.
😂😂😂
👀
This video actually made me a little woozy. And, I don't ever suffer from vertigo or motion sickness. The mirrors were just too much. No wonder the price is under a million. The renovation costs will bring it up to double the asking price.
I love this one! So much space and under a million! I could probably do without all the mirroring. Even back in the 80's, it wasn't my thing. The 'Christmas in Rockefeller Center' bathroom was something else.
Cash- Stunning retro style that still works. Great location and reasonably priced for a change. Thanks for always bringing your viewership top quality videos.
Keep going!☮️👏👏👏👏
Your videos do a lot to show the preserved richness of New York City as well as the bad. This apartment and the neighborhood (and the views) are classic '80s NYC.
That price is nothing. Wow. I would have expected more. Wow.
What a great pad and for that price, it seems to good to be true....another fine NY apartment tour Cash !!!
Mirrors on the ceiling, pink champagne on ice…..we’re all prisoner of our ow device! The buyer of this place would go through gallons upon gallons of winded a year!
🎶🎵🎼
Watching this guy question 80s decor is kinda funny and heartbreaking..the whole place is like a childhood flashback .and yes mirrors were a huge thing..I would live in that place and feel like home instantly without trying
He was kind of annoying with all the backhanded criticisms, clueless questions and yelling!
I... LOVE THIS!!! Born in '71 and I can totally relate to all the mirrors... hahaha!!! I even imagined my "dream house" in the 80's having a "sunken den" so the separate floor levels are awesome! I would probably only change the wallpaper and the gold fixtures!
Wow that is so cool!! I wouldn't want to change a thing! Love seeing Phil and Pam, both great people! Thanks Cash for showing us this awesome place, I really enjoyed this video 😊👍
Best apartment ever Cash! I love it and would not change a single thing! Thanks.
Speaking as a child of the 80s I absolutely love this place. The decor with all its mysterious 80s fabulous nooks and crannies of space that was shown is just super fantabulous. No joke. If I had that kind of money, I think I would actually buy this. Even though I’m sure, there’s some work that needs to be done behind all the sparkled magic of staging that we saw. Good one Cash. 👍🏽
The mirrors on the ceiling are SOOOO 1980s! When I was married in the 80s, when we went to buy a bedroom set, we kept getting shuttled to the ones with the mirrors on the ceiling. My at-the-time husband said "I can watch when we're having sex!" I kind of cringed and was grateful that we didn't have the money for ceiling mirrors.
I also remember the Barbican hotel. In the late 1970s it cost $75/week to stay there, and they had a "no men allowed" policy. The idea behind it was to make single women feel safe, but when you have as many male friends as I do, it's more limiting than safe. I'm sure that the cleaning up of crime in some of the neighborhoods led to its downfall.
Why would the cleaning up of the crime lead to the Barican's downfall? If no men were allowed, then clearly they could not do prostitution there, so how did reducing crime lead to its downfall?
I think that you meant "Barbizon Hotel".
@@kevinbyrne4538 I think you're right - the original poster wrote "Barbican" and then I just mindlessly copied the error in my comment. YOU are right! 👍
That old school lobby with all that wood paneling was stunning. Then you walk in2 that apartment & wow what a difference. Definitely wasn't expecting what's there. Drop a tab of acid & you'll definitely be tripping the light fantastic with all those mirrors & lights! Whoever owned it previously spent beaucoup bucks on the renovations. It's all quality but just way to many mirrors for my taste. It's almost bordering on tacky now. I really don't want to be carrying around a bottle of windex all the v time. That said, there are definitely elements worth keeping. The size & neighborhood justifies the price for sure.
no veneers..i bet solid millwork
I think I saw that lobby in an old “Sex and the City” episode.
I LOVE IT! Wouldn’t change a thing.
It's amazing, I love it and wouldn't change a thing!
Oh my god. Absolutely magnificent. I’m ready to give up my old New Orleans house and go mod. That apartment is amazing. Don’t touch a thing. It’s effing perfect.
Apparently a lot of narcissists lived back in that day. My how that's changed!!! Fantastic tour and crib. I could sleep like a baby there. Thanks Cash. You make this look easy but I for one appreciate the hard work you put into these videos every blessed day of your life. They should pay you more for this.
The mirrors appear to be polished plate glass mirrors. Polished plate was the highest quality. Very expensive to make. It is not made any more. It gave a perfect reflection free of any distortion. Mirrors are now made from ''Float'' glass. FULL of distortions. Whoever did the mirror work probably hoarded a warehouse full of polished plate. Glass manufacturers discontinued polished plate glass from the late 50's thru the 70's.
Wow! Thanks for that info. I love detail Info how cool.
Amazing apartment. I’ll take “as is”
I don't live near New York and could never afford this, but if I ever win the lottery...I'm coming for this apartment lol. It's stunning. I would change nothing!
I would live in that apartment
I absolutely love this place - seems like somewhere Samantha Jones (Sex & The City) or Gordon Gecko would have lived in in the 80's xxxx
I think if I bought that apartment the only thing I would change is getting rid of all the mirrors other than that it's perfect the way it is
I agree. The price is amazing
I can’t believe this is below 1 million. I love it! It’s like living in the show Dynasty.
I knew a man in the 80s who had a bizarre mirrored high floor apartment in a round tower downtown. E v e r y t h i n g was mirrored, chrome, or black. He even wanted to get an expensive Next™ computer just because it was black. Thank you, Cash, for the nightmare fuel.

I have that same ancient dishwasher in my relic of an apartment. Can’t think of any good reason to romanticize the past…😋
Lasts well, then.
It's crazy how it still looks stylish and relevant. I love it as-is.
I LOL’d at the other agent talking about old school pink bathrooms. I love a good 60s/70s/80s bathroom! Pastel pink or blue are the best.
Anyone else get vibes of Bruce Lee vs Han in Enter the Dragon (if you know, you know). I was very surprised at how low the asking price was until I saw there was a knob missing from the oven. That sort of necessary repair will kill the value, lol. I can imagine a musician in the 80's would have lived here. Personally, I would change nothing unless it was broken and needed changed (oven knobs!)
My daughter thinks I am crazy that I would rather live in Midtown East in a classic mid-century apartment building like this... rather something like One Manhattan Square. I would move in and not change a thing.
Great apartment. Love that it still has all the 80s fixtures.
Love it! A lot of those trends are back in style.
I love, love, love this place. Please don't change a thing. :))
The menu prices at that diner are out of this world. Oatmeal $8, with fruit $12. Yogurt parfait $13. Two eggs with bacon and pancakes $21.
No. They are of NYC. They've always been high but Inflation has been a bitch. It's also the wealthiest city in the world, so rent for these places to run a business is astronomical. Something like 1 out of every 20 people in NYC is a millionaire. Finally, most people will make anywhere from 2-20x more money in NYC, so businesses charge more than most towns. For instance, I make 3x more money here than I would in Cleveland. Sure enough, my rent is also 3x more expensive, So basically, it all evens out more or less. Except when I go visit family in Ohio, my wallet essentially triples.
The fun thing is, when you go to somewhere like Disney World, there's zero sticker shock. In fact, their prices seem reasonable! 😂
He was so funny! I grew up in the 80s and I loved to see this!
i love it, the mirror furniture id replace most of it, especially that closet, but id love to live here
Wait. What!? $900k. That can't be right. That's practically giving it away. Is she talking about monthly rent!? 😂
I was thinking the same thing. Something feels off about that
Yeah there must be massive hoa fees or some hidden costs. 900k gets you a @ 600ft studio in Manhattan
