    Tboz said that after Lisa died, the group basically was forgotten by the industry. I’d hate to put chilli and tboz down but lisa definitely did bring the spark to the group. She did all the creative elements from song writing to concept creating. She had a very unique voice, big aspirations, amazing flow/lyrics and she was also the most well known one out of the 3 due to her crazy antics and outshining persona.
    Logically making decisions wise things might not be her brightest as she tends to do things on a whim but that shows her creativeness, innovativeness and the fact she has no fear of exploring new things. Buisness was also another thing she could do along with her strong morals (Her not standing by the lyrics of creep, her wanting to do a futuristic theme as early as 94 and that whole thing with dallas cuz boi, 4 million? keep yo love life issues OUT of the buisness chilli!)
    I’m not saying Tboz and chilli are irrelevant as Tboz added a whole new swagger with her low raspy voice that wasn’t seen around that point in time and chilli complimenting that, making a mix of 2 amazing voices but losing lisa was definitely a massive blow for them.
    Much love to all of them, TLC4EVA!

    • @FLdancer00
      @FLdancer00 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      But that's the thing with "creatives", they swing too far on their side. You should have enough sense to know you're strengths and weaknesses. Be creative and listen to your partner's when it comes to the business side so there's a balance and you can be successful. It's a common theme in music for artists to play the game and "sellout" for the first 2 albums or so. Then once you're so big it's undeniable, your record has to give into demands or they'll lose you. It sucks, but it often happens.
      Tbh, in the 90's, I think they were screwed any way they tried. They just did not have a great team around them that could fight for them. It's much easier now to find different paths to success.

    Even though FanMail was a huge selling album and a comeback for TLC, I still feel it could've been as huge commercially as Britney Spears' ...Baby One More Time and The Backstreet Boys' Millennium. It should've had more radio hits. I Miss You So Much, If They Knew, and Come On Down could've been extremely successful if they were singles. Instead, the 3rd and final single was Dear Lie, which peaked at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nonetheless, I'm glad the album won 3 Grammys, with TLC winning 2 of them. FanMail was the album Chilli solely sang in several songs from one album (though she had her very first solo song, Take Our Time, from CrazySexyCool) and was arguably the de facto leader for this album's era. Her vocals were perfect for futuristic R&B, just like T-Boz's vocals were great for hip-hop soul and how Left Eye's persona and image were a spot on match for new jack swing. I still listen to FanMail from time to time. It's that great of an album.

    Fanmail was definitely a gem 💎...I think all first 3 albums were dope. The 4th, there was a disconnect since some of it was recorded posthumously. After Left Eye's passing, you really started to see who was the creative force behind TLC. TLC needed and needs Left Eye and Left Eye needed TLC. TLC's music nowadays (no disrespect) isn't the same, beyond the fact that Left Eye passed. Left Eye needed TLC because TLC was what was the steering wheel to her creativity. If you notice, in her solo work, there was a disconnect as well. Bottom line, they all were GREAT together. Hands down, best chemistry of a girl group. I would love to see what would've become of Left Eye in 2021.

    The greatest female group of all time. Fanmail was actually supposed to be a 30 million copy seller like CrazySexyCool, but it was not marketed well. Nonetheless, Fanmail topped the charts, garnered 2 #1 hits in the Billboard Hot 100 charts and in 1999 solidified TLC as the most successful Female group of the 90s decade and the top selling female group of all time. Plus the Fanmai tour is the highest grossing selling tour for a female group of any female group in global history and the tour was not promoted well and it was not a global tour and majority of the tour dates were cancelled. No female group has done what TLC has did. TLC was an all Black girl group that had many barriers placed against them and that's why I love them. Flashy you made me re-listen to the Fanmail album. OMG It makes so much more sense now because it was way ahead of it's time. I have the CD copy of this album and must admit I liked it but didn't quite understand it's relevance. There u go a album almost 21 years ahead of it's time I think.

      @@djwalkerfemaledj I have a personal connection with the song Unpretty. I was bullied throughout my kindergarten years (started school 99') and when felt down after a hard day that song came on at the right time. Whether it's the video on mtv or on the radio, that song always made me feel better. Honestly at times the song triggers me to remember the bullying I dealt with and I do cry at times. I feel refreshed afterwords, like a boulder been lifted of my shoulders.

    You did a good job overall. However, you focused mostly on the drama of the Fanmail era, and did not highlight its success enough. The album had 2 huge #1 singles (No Scrubs and Unpretty. Dear Lie was also a top 40 hit in many international markets. The album was last certified 6x platinum in the U.S. (needs to be updated) and has sold at least 10 million copies worldwide. Silly Ho was a top 20 hit on Billboard’s r/b and hip hop charts, even though it was not an official single. I’m Good At Being Bad was also a top 40 smash on the r/b and hip hop charts but not an official single. They won many awards during this era. Also, this is the first album where all 3 members co-wrote multiple songs on the album, with T-Boz penning 2 of the singles from this era.

    During this era, I wish Chilli experimented more with her look, as T-boz Did with the red hair ( I loved that red hair she had in " No Scrubs " ) "My Life" "LoveSick " or " Shout" should've been released after " Unpretty ". "Dear Lie " felt like Unpretty Part 2. Crazy thing is I noticed how absent Lisa was on in this album. You heard alot of her during the first album, quite a bit on CrazySexyCool. But not as much on "Fanmail" which was strange before finding out the drama behind the scenes. I wish "Silly Ho" got a video treatment. Chilli should've had more lead vocals on songs / singles after " Unpretty " because it brought a fresher vocal arrangement than the usual of Tboz singing lead.
