@Techquickie Thanks guys, your timing for this video was impeccable! I am right now, looking at what motherboards to get for an upgrade and this was posted just in time!
Motherboards can still have a significant difference in performance. Case in point: not having enough full-speed SATA ports due to SATA ports being shared with PCI-E lanes (half-speed for 2 SATA ports, for example) or the PCI-E slot being disabled altogether (full-speed for 2 SATA ports). It's not so simple cut-and-dry that all motherboards will produce the same desired results (speed) and you need to be careful with the number of lanes. Definitely not something the average gamer needs to worry about, but still something to consider if you need a lot or all of your SATA ports to operate at full speed.
Fatherboards screw around a lot so you really end up with no performance at all with those ones you can tell those they've already screwed around by the time they are bought they look just like a motherboard but the mistress has screwed it's brains out so it don't work anymore
The mobo that came with my PC that I bought back in 2010 still works. The good news is that it came with some nifty features that I don't need to use, like built-in wi-fi and an optical audio output. The bad news is that the socket isn't supported anymore and really the only components I can upgrade are the GPU which I've done and the amount of DDR3 RAM

King Harkinian you should like DTX then fits most itx cases anyway (if its itx and can take a dual slot gpu it can fit DTX) and means you could run crossfire rx490x2s if you used waterblocks and that would be 41Tflops of power :p
Well, even if you're not overclocking, ensuring you get the right number of USB ports of the right version is still important. That goes for SATA ports, expansion slots, and motherboard size. And, of course, ensuring you got the right board for the right CPU. And whether or not you want WiFi integration.
Linus, it's not true that on the Intel side only the Z and X series chipsets have native support for overclocking. For example, the MSI B150M has built-in support for overclocking Intel chips, even without a BIOS update. You may want to update your information about this.
Macbruber only certain b150 boards have over clocking support but the manufacturer has to put it in for you to overclock. With a b150 over clock it would also disable the integrated graphics and also temperature info for the cpu. You would be way better off with a z170 board
It is also important to consider the types, number of, and positioning of PCI slots. For example an upgrade in graphics card could mean a slot becomes obstructed by a fan or heat sink which is a real pain in the ass if you didn't take that into consideration. Ribbon cable does work wonders though.
Don't use Tunnelbear! I have had a 1 year subscription because Linus said it was good and constantly had problems. I am with another provider now which is waaaaaaaaaay better (and more expensive). At 2:04, what motherboard is that with 14 chokes around the CPU? - - - And, does it have HQ components? Oh, and I already have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Z sound card and software. Thank you for this video.
My personal choices tend to be Asus ROG boards for my personal gaming/OC rigs. And I have server boards in all my server/appliance machines. Supermico in my FreeNAS server and Asrock Rack in my pfSense router. Only ITX server board I could find at the time. That does not mean you have to do the same mind you. Just my personal preferences.
I miss the plain red motherboards. The green ones weren't that attractive, but the red ones looked nice without being too distracting. I was very happy when I saw AMD's Naples demo server motherboard with dual socket.
Just came back on this video to comment, that now the Ryzen's 3rd performance is affected by the motherboards bios, well, while it doesn't affect the raw performance (hopefully they don't disrupt it with new defective or inappropriate updates), also idk why, but i felt i need to comment this here :|
what about cpu slot compatibility? or computer compatibility with the motherboard? i mean, i read that changing a motherboard can cause issues due to the difference between what you had and what you got (didn't encouter this issue myself, but that's because the motherboard i got was from the same company, just a newer model)
Here is a good idea for a techquickie episode. What is the difference between a PCI SSD, and a Sata SSD? Which one should I buy? Which one runs faster?
I just use an "old" Gigabyte Mainboard and i cant see any issues with it. Except of one Heatsink, which is a bit loose but i will fix it with new cooling paste soon.
I feel like alot of the stuff in higher end boards is unnecessary. Especially things like reinforced pci slots or the metal backplate. I've never broken a pci slot, or broken a motherboard while installing it, and I don't know anyone who has. Integrated audio, m.2 support, and a variety of I/O is cool and all, but those can just be added later through pci expansion cards(altough that might not be an option in mini ITX builds)
Suhkma Dheek droop isnt anything to do with the pcie slot though so reinforcing it does nothing. noonr whos had droop has taken thier card out to find a bent slot. its just marketing bs.card droop comes from the rear pcie output bracket bending down slightly but mostly its from a minor twist in the pc from corner to corner but noone inderstands this because why think for yourself when you can just read the marketing.
For non-over-the-top z270 builds, just buy the Gigabyte GA-Z270X-UD5, it's the only z270 board with Thunderbolt 3 integrated, plus it's got great liquid cooling support. Thunderbolt 3 is basically a must: It's a magical port that replaces basically all other ports plus it operates at 40 GIGABITS PER FUCKING SECONDS.
So I'm getting an i5 7500, not planning on over clocking . I didn't get the Z270, and the H270 was only 20$ more than the B250 , so I just got that one. Did it matter?
what about cpu socket type? surely picking one which gives the best options for future cpu upgrades should be considered - its't that the only reason to change mother boards?

0:34 why did he say "all but gone"?
Does he just mean Gone?
Can you make a video explaining what are the differences between d3h,ud5,hd3,ud3 and such.I can't seem to find an anwser.
What about underclocking? Do you need a special bios for underclocking?
My personal choices tend to be Asus ROG boards for my personal gaming/OC rigs. And I have server boards in all my server/appliance machines. Supermico in my FreeNAS server and Asrock Rack in my pfSense router. Only ITX server board I could find at the time. That does not mean you have to do the same mind you. Just my personal preferences.
I miss the plain red motherboards. The green ones weren't that attractive, but the red ones looked nice without being too distracting. I was very happy when I saw AMD's Naples demo server motherboard with dual socket.
Just came back on this video to comment, that now the Ryzen's 3rd performance is affected by the motherboards bios, well, while it doesn't affect the raw performance (hopefully they don't disrupt it with new defective or inappropriate updates), also idk why, but i felt i need to comment this here :|
How do I know what size mother board I got a got a pre built one I did not build It my self
now all we need is a single plug for the HHD light, power switch ECT. do we really need to connect those tiny cables still :/
what about cpu slot compatibility? or computer compatibility with the motherboard? i mean, i read that changing a motherboard can cause issues due to the difference between what you had and what you got (didn't encouter this issue myself, but that's because the motherboard i got was from the same company, just a newer model)
would an h110 or m150 come with the bios preupdated so u could use kaby lake or would I have to get a newer chipset board
I LOVED this episode , and that ending :D
Here is a good idea for a techquickie episode. What is the difference between a PCI SSD, and a Sata SSD? Which one should I buy? Which one runs faster?
so which motherboard to buy plz reply
Who writes the scripts and small jokes? NAILED IT MAN! loved the video.
Suhkma Dheek if its screwed in properly it shouldn't wobble and if it does a piece of foil wont help, its marketing and can be ignored.
Can you make a video if you better buy a motherbord with USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt?
What about PCI versions and slot types?... and lanes... and stuf.. its so confusing.
So if I don't want to overclock can I just get basically any motherboard?
It's PCI lanes that I don't understand. How many you need what they do etc.
what about cpu socket type? surely picking one which gives the best options for future cpu upgrades should be considered - its't that the only reason to change mother boards?
