I think that when Amber & Shalom were popular, they were the last "wave" of models that became sort of mainstream, household names...before mags started putting actresses on the covers, and brands started using celebrities as their spokespersons. There are still models who have the spotlight, but it seems concentrated within the industry
I don't think anyone has read my complete comment. I said Amber & Shalom were the last wave before celebrities took over on mag covers. I didn't say they were the absolute last wave.

@Energetic Coach in fact they are categorized as "waifs", they are the "anti-supermodels". Less diva attitude but still great, great models. I would say: much better than many of the "supers". No matter who but all the models that came during the waif wave and after it didn't get the supermodel status, no matter how much work or recognition they got. Even Kate isn't considered a supermodel, she is the "anti-supermodel" personified. Remember that the industry was tired of the supers. Until the brazilian wave that appeared mames like Gisele, Carmen, Karolina. Adriana Lima has got to be incredibly famous but i don't think we can call her a supermodel. She never got to be a household name in the fashion industry. She was not habitual in hi fashion shows, she wasn't the face of any designer, she didn't do big brands campaigns. Same as Laetitia, who was more commercial, and most of the Victoria's Secret angels.
Models today can't compare to Amber Valletta and the other 90s supers. They have some of the most imaginative and memorable fashion photos. Back then it seems like all the models had personality. They all stood out in their own way.
We must also consider that it is more difficult to achieve a memorable photo in a time where we are bombarded and overstimulated with images.
90s Supermodel Era is just the best times in Fashion. It does not compare to any newer era by far.
they were basic their faces were pretty but I had friends in HS prettier just werent tall, they just had height.
Because they were platformed, mainly because most of the 90's supermodels you can think of spoke English. Models have always had personality, but if the industry isn't giving them the license to showcase that, then we aren't going to see it.
i love how amber has been very open about her addiction issues. you can tell in one of the clips she was def using. i appreciate her honesty. she was always stunning but her weight wasnt something to be advertising, especially because amber even says she attributes how skinny she was to her drug abuse. now every model is super thin.

Amber reminds me of the great models from the 70s like Patti Hansen and Lauren Hutton. She’s like the all American girl and her beauty is relatable to a lot of people.
Models in that generation are recognizable unlike those on the catwalk nowadays.

Written a while ago but doesn’t make sense. It’s 2021 and I can name the current big names in modelling.
If I'm not mistaken Amber was the one who first showed off "That Dress" that was worn by Jennifer Lopez made famous 20 years ago and again in 2019. I remember seeing her on video coming down that runway, and OH!!! She killed it!! Girl was on point!!! 😊😊😊

She and Shalom are one of those women who bring forth substance in a world where superficiality is so prevalent. They know how to deliver a brand. Whether it be on adverts or on the catwalk.
Amber is another undefined type of beauty...she us so naturally outerwordly...sophisticated, classy, and natural all at the same time
Amber, Cindy, Christy, Shalom, Kate, Linda, Naomi, Yasmin Ghauri, and so many others from the 80’s and 90’s has unique faces, were spectacularly beautiful, and exuded glamour with their own individuality and AMAZING walks..
the models today all walk the same, and are so cosmetically altered to the point where they are all completely interchangeable with each other, and look like Kardashians

Jennifer Lopez; and Amber w/ Georgina Grenville in Steven Meisel's LEGENDARY Versace campaign shot in Trousdale Estates.... I know you *LIVED* for those moments just as I did!!!!!! The models of the 80s and 90s were the best models. They didn't have social media to promote them. They had to work hard to reach fame.

i think she is still gorgeous till today...gracefully....acted so well in many movies.
There will be only one amber, one shalom, there kind is no more and will never be...the it quality of then is very different to the it quality of now, it's like apples and oranges...being a child of the 70's gave me the opportunity of being part of an era which saw the rise and fall of the original super models and it will never come back... i'm glad i was around for that!
Amber did many of the best brand campaign ads. Of course she looked great on runways, but it's those amazing photographs of the best editorials and campaigns she did which will be remembered forever in fashion history.
I think Amber has a personality, unique beauty, wit and charm, models today are showing more of that but still not enough, I like this episode, the transition from supers to more relatable models in the mid 90's.
Please do supermodels of the 70's and 80's. I know Già Carangi and Tina Chow have both passed away, but I think it will be nice to introduce them to the new generation of who they were and the real struggles they had to face.

There’s literally no comparison to the models of today and those of 30 years ago. Amber and Shalom certainly were exquisite creatures of the 90’s, the era of the Supermodel. I’ve seen Amber being interviewed a few times and she’s just so authentic and down to earth. She imparts what she’d learned (the hard way) to help others.🤷🏻 I’m sure that Shalom’s living her best life somewhere.

I love Miss Turlington, but Yasmeet is also nr 1 fro me, both were different, Christy was more elegance, Yasmeen was more sexy, that body..and how she moved it; I dont understand how people only speak of Naomi, Christy and Linda, for me Yasmeen was also up there!

The girls of the 90’s were the greatest chameleons. That’s what kept them all fresh. Back in the day they had to change several times in a show. Nowadays, it’s one girl, one look. So no one remembers any of them. Sad. “You better work!” Is more apropos than ever.
Wow! I know Amber as an actress that I have seen before somewhere but couldn't pinpoint where. Now I realize she was a model previously to being an actress. She is, of course, stunning as she is an articulate, businesswoman.
I prefer Shalom, but I used to love Amber in the 90's Elizabeth Arden commercials.

I love Amber and I would say any Amber Valletta for Galliano was major to me!! The Versace Campaign with her and Georgina was by far one of the best fashion images I've ever seen!! I really think she's one of Americas True Institute of Beauty alongside names like Crawford, Brinkley, Hutton etc

I think the FIRST OF IT'S KIND television show "Fashion Television" out of Toronto Canada, with host Jeanne Beker, did SOOO much for the success fashion celebrity we know today.
Models like Amber Valetta were beautiful. They were individuals not cookie cutter people. They say they are now.

All the girls through the decades are beautiful and individual in their own way. There were gorgeous creatures then, as there are now. Every turn in fashion releases a whole new idea of what beauty constitutes.
I have always found the odd beauty the most powerful.
Classic beauty, although constant and pleasing, can become dull and repetitive.
Though no less satisfying.
Amber is the original hippie chick of the group.

Have to agree. High fashion modeling has a history of seeking some off feature to a girl and also the changing times and trends. I noticed this long ago, and even Christy said this. If the girl is already to perfect, what is the challenge in dressing them up. Saw Amber on a magazine once, and it was Wow, but turned out it was the makeup and photography at play and this is what it is all about. Each has their favorite model, and each will say theirs was the best. If I had to pick, it was Kate Moss and Claudia Schiffer, then everyone else of course.
Most of my waif style haircuts were influenced by Helena, Amber and Linda.

They were the last wave of celeb models the glamour is gone. Except for Carmen Kass, Kaya Gerber, Leni Klum, Lyla Moss and Lily-Rose Depp in this era. Except for those 5 girls the modeling industry seems a little watered down. Instagirls everyone looks the same when will unique and original come back?
Modelling today feels very manufactured. It's not so much about beauty or fantasy characters anymore.
Isn't Kate Moss the original waif of the 90's??? Not that the waif is something new to the 90's, but the one in that decade to brake the supermodel mold was Kate Moss.
Kate is from the UK darling, Amber is home grown....therefore, on this soil she is the original waif :-)
First of all, I'm not your darling, second, we don't live in a different planet. Kate Moss is the original waif, I wasn't really asking. And while I like Amber, she never reached anyplace close to what Moss did. And in the fashion world, Kate is the original 90's waif, there's not much to argue there, you may prefer one over the other, you may dislike Moss, but she's an icon. Valetta is not, as simple as that.

Well, the original "superwaif" was Kate. Prior to the supermodel era you had twiggy and along some other famous ladies, but the original waif from the 90's is Kate.

Wasn't her face used for a scientific experiment where babies stare longer at her photograph rather their own moms photo? meaning that her face was perfectly symmetrical and more appealing to even babies.

her name is Karlie Kloss and she is nothing in comparison to Amber, Shalom & the other legends
Karlie has a standout super long body like Jerry Hall did in the 70s. It remains to be seen what impact she really will have
