Big Lots was decent twenty years ago. Later they decided to focus on furniture. Cheap quality furniture. The general merchandise has been like what you see here for a long time. They did this to themselves. Stores like Ocean State have a much better selection at better prices.

Nice video to capture the reality of a retail “also ran”. I visited my local Big Lots several weeks ago on a weekend afternoon in search of a storage ottoman. There was a ton of furniture there but mostly overpriced below average quality living room sets. The food section featured an average selection of pantry food but much of it priced higher than I can purchase on sale at my local Kroger. I won’t miss that store but I don’t want it to become yet another empty storefront in my area of town where retail options are already limited. I hope my location is one they retain but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t.

These places never seem to learn. 1. Good stuff cheap not cheap stuff overpriced. 2. Taking debt means someone is going to want their money back. Stores like Christmas Tree and Big Lots always seen to forget these rules. I used to go to that strip mall to hit JoAnn, and never once went in Big Lots. Looks like I didn't miss much.

liked biglots when they were mostly food and electronics. they expanded and added cheaply made clothing and furniture. then they cut back on the real deals. This all happened 2 years ago. now whatever i got there i can now get at the $1.25 store.

The signs look an awful lot like the liquidation company signs. I know Big Lots sold a lot of overstock, etc, but I wonder too if a bunch of even lower grade junk was brought in for the closings. Also it is really sad and kinda scary to see the economy in such a mess. SO MANY retailers and restaurants shutting down.
    Thanks Tom!

Big lots used to have a market, but competition from local businesses and others; impacted performance. Once I moved, I wouldn't see a big lots store anymore. Ollie's a local business, pretty much took business away from Big lots by offering similar varieties, but unlike big lots... Sold food and goods that didn't sell for a much cheaper price. It's my go to store for some snacks, cereal, bathroom essentials, and living goods.

@2:22 we used these at walgreens. They hook to the back of the truck bringing inventory. It lets you slide the inventory down to the receiving team instead of having to lift it up and down from the truck. In walgreens case we received almost everything in red containers, something that you would store christmas decorations in lol

I miss the old Big Lots. It used to be a reliable, cheap place to find house and kitchen basics. I've helped so many friends move where there was more than one run to the store involved. It also used to be a good place to find weird snacks- surprisingly a lot of vegan stuff, which would make it a perfect stop on road trips. Used to get all of my Christmas wrapping stuff there, too. Now I only go there because they send me $5 off $15. I'll get cleaning stuff then fill the rest out with snacks and drinks, but once I hit that $15, I'm out. I just like free stuff. I agree with the other commenter who said they are comparable to the $1.25 store now.

Visited my local Big Lots last week, for the first time in like four years. It's not closing, yet, but still had empty shelves everywhere, and a VERY barebones feel compared to every BigLots I've ever visited. Ollie's has completely surpassed everything BigLots was doing and that's all there is to say. BigLots long ago gave up being odd lots and closeouts and began imitating places like furniture stores mixed with Family Dollar or Dollar General, but not in a good way. A halfa$$Ed way. It's a miracle they've hung on this long. Ollie's is expanding like crazy by sticking to the old model that has always worked. If only BigLots had stayed on that course....

For a time, Big Lots! used to have stuff you couldn't get anywhere else. But, with the coming of the internet that became a thing of the past. I knew they were in trouble when they spent a lot of money to bring in frozen food coolers so they could sell ice cream, tv dinners and the like, only to take them all out less than two years later.

the last time I was in a big lots was 20 years ago, and it sure looks a lot different today. They sold a lot weird food items, like icelandic frosted flakes. They were made in the US and the labeling was in icelandic. I am not sure how they made it to big lots, but I guess iceland didn't like frosted flakes too much. They also sold atari 2600 games at one point. Now it looks like a discount furniture store or something.

We bought a good amount of decent quality furniture at good prices from Big Lots (Torrington, CT location) over the years and were often times our best option to avoid having to shop out of town. We would sometimes find really good deals on food items but overall I'm not overly impressed with the prices or quality. They will be closing in November, and it seems sad and ironic that in times of inflation that a DISCOUNT store would be struggling. You'd think they would be able to survive if anyone could.

There's a Big Lots in my town (southern US), just went into it for the first time this weekend. It's not going out-of-business, but for the most part I didn't see anything worth buying. The prices weren't like, super-low or anything, and the inventory was "meh" at best. Probably the nicest things they had were DVD collections of obscure TV shows ("Trolls"?) that I haven't seen elsewhere. Still, how many of these discount T.J. Maxx-type retailers do we need?

They worry more about their bonuses and not taking care of its customers. They also treated their employees like shit. Not giving the resources to take care of the customer so they complain then the employee gets written up for not doing their job. Store level employees coming up with solutions for issues before corporate but getting shot down and the company losing money. SMH. I can go on and on. Glad I left the company. Was planning on making a career of it but after a few years I was good. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. 😂

I see a lot of comments about how the prices were lower elsewhere, but the places i hear mentioned are large corporate entities that sell at a loss to drive out the competition and then start to slowly raise prices (or do custom sized products that are actually more expensive per unit in deceptive shaped containers so they look the same size as their standard retail products). Just remember, any large group of humans stop behaving as individuals amd instead start to follow fluid dynamics or a group "hive mind".
Is this the case with big lots? Probably not, they were the loser in the race to the bottom monopoly grab that private equity is driving all business towards. Will i miss it? In the end, when proces go way up to the few surviving companies and prices go up, i will - but even right now we are past the point of matket fprces shaped by consumers. Off brands are the same company trying to get a larger market share, and even brands are more marketing as they all get made in the same factories overseas. So i guess i already miss the old ways already.
