Selecting a Pawpaw tree requires a little knowledge about the TWO types - grafted and NOT grafted. A grafted tree will have a name - the name of the variety of Pawpaw tree. They fruit in 3-4 years. A NOT grafted are simply grown from seed. They will take 7-8 yrs to fruit. Alternatively, you can graft onto these seedlings. Grafting isn't difficult. Visit a Pawpaw Festival and learn about the largest fruit NATIVE to North America. The fruit’s texture is like custard, and the fruit has tropical aroma and flavors. heppy.org/pawpawfest
@@paulnovak833 well, tissue sampling is over my head but as technology changes, and becomes more accessible, you have an opportunity! Sample known cultivars and I suppose you'd have evidence of success. Let me know how it goes!
Two other really good points in favor of seedling pawpaws (in addition to the cost) are: 1. Any root suckers sent up will produce fruit identical to the mother tree, so if you have a good quality seedling you could eventually have a grove of such trees. 2. The lifespan of non-grafted pawpaw trees is substantially longer than grafted. The little information I've found about this indicates that within 15-20 years of productive life, grafted pawpaw trees will die back and you'll have to re-graft or be satisfied with whatever the rootstock sends up. The lifespan of pawpaw seedlings is limited only by the longevity of the root system, which could be hundreds of years. An extra 4-5 years waiting for fruit can pay you back with interest.
@TimothyHeimbender i appreciate the insight AND, the longer-term view to growing fruiting plants (fruiting tree or otherwise). very refreshing to see the long-term view. that's very HEPPY! thanks for stopping by! 🐞
For HEPPY, I suggest growing the following: KSU Chappell, Siri Gold Vishnu, Regulus, Rigel, Caspian, Florence, Allegheny, (Mango x Wabash) Cliff England, IXL, "Mammoth X", Maria's Joy, Jerry's Delight, Tallahatchie, KSU Benson, Avatar, Tropical Treat, Benny’s Favorite, Free Byrd, NC1, the new unreleased (Allegheny & Susquehanna) crosses of Jim Davis of Deep Run Orchard, Westminster Maryland. Timothy Lane is also doing new crosses like (Susquehanna x Maria's Joy) which will be available as scions in about 8 years, hopefully.
@@heppylifestyle There is a lot of awesome cultivars not listed, which I didn't mention, some of which because I was certain you were already familiar with & some because they have milder flavors. I attempted to list the most aromatically unique cultivars of quality which are less known.
@@heppylifestyle You should also speak with Sheri Crabtree & Kirk Pomper about getting scion of KSU's new unreleased cultivar which is a (Susquehanna x Sunflower) cross, which is firmer than Susquehanna, has color break, richer & more aromatic, larger, higher yielding & more vigorous, plus more disease resistant so far. It has only fruited 3 years so far. so very new cross under evaluation in the new orchard with several hundred new (Susquehanna x Susquehanna), (Susquehanna x Sunflower) , (Sunflower x Susquehanna) crosses.
@ you got it! I have about 120 varieties on a spreadsheet but where are they, do they still exist, how they taste, etc is a whole other ballgame! You may have listed a few not on my list!!! Thanks again for your feedback and insight!

Another excellent video by Heppy Lifestyle!
Im developing protocols to tissue culture pawpaws. Best of both worlds. Ksu wasnt interested in discussing this with me for some reason
