- Sadly, it’s true. While sitting in the parking lot at the mechanic's shop in Chicago, our RV was side swiped by a semi truck. Needless to say, we're a bit sour about it 😭

First make sure there is no frame or suspension damage. Also, make sure the insurance company knows you have a classic, restored vehicle. I suspect they will try to say 'Its an old RV - here's $500, which is all it is worth'. You may need to hire an attorney.
Concerning the Colorado RV event - it is possible that someone there will know where you can get appropriate body parts.

I worked insurance for years and you are right about them saying the vehicle costs little to nothing. This is true especially with commercial insurance companies.

Take this dude's insurance for EVERYTHING you can. Ideally hire a lawyer to work with you, as his insurance will try to nickel and dime you. The trucking insurance policies are loaded for a reason, so make sure you don't "settle" for anything.
The whole situation absolutely sucks and I feel so bad for you guys after all that work you did. And if that truck driver can't manage that clearance appropriately you would hope the company takes action against him.

Please try to read thru my ramblings, retired insurance adjuster.(I'm not an attorney so this isn't legal advice just some helpful hints.) No, please DONT hire an attorney unless necessary. This is property damage and the atty takes 1/3 of the recovery and he really isn't going to be able to get you much more than the insurance company will pay. You have lots of documentation on the time and money you have involved in this. Yes, they likely will try to "total" the vehicle but you will need to show that it is not just an average vintage RV. Luckily your videos are excellent proof of the condition it is in. Spend time researching what an updated RV would bring on the market. All RV prices are inflated right now because of the pandemic. If necessary, you can get an actual appraisal on the vehicle (pre accident) to establish the value of the unit. (this will be useful when you purchase insurance on your RV so that your own insurance company does not see it as a "normal" vehicle of that age.) Even if they "total" it, many states allow you to buy back the RV for the "salvage" value. They have to show you that they have legitimate salvage bids and they have to show you who they are from and who the actual person was that bid on it.
Also be sure to have the transmission checked out since dragging it in park certainly didn't help any thing
Since it was to be your "house" you should also be entitled to "loss of use." Loss of use included the value of having a place to sleep but also the added expense of meals out, etc. Please don't be intimidated: most adjusters want to give you a fair value and they are just as puzzled about how to handle an old vehicle as you are. (Also depending on who the trucking company is, they may be self-insured and are willing to "bend the rules" a bit to get you on the road again.)

@@jans3133 Maybe. It depends on the agreement, but not hiring an attorney could mean the insurance company tries to low ball or push them to settle for less than what they need. Maybe they will be fine without a lawyer, and they can go that route. But they'd better be ready to fight if necessary.

There’s an RV siding plant in Hemet Ca that can make many different styles and patterns of RV siding. They do everything from 50’s 60’s to current. And they ship it too.

I can't imagine the frustration you guys are feeling after putting "endless work" into that rv. I've done reno work before and I understand how much work goes into it. I can't imagine how crappy it must feel. Truly sorry!

Ya, we're very, very thankful no one was inside or underneath it! We know it was a slow accident, but it definitely could have been way worse if someone had been actively working on it.

Maybe there's another '76 out there in pristine condition in a junkyard and you can pull off the panels to replace them? I've so loved this adventure and hope that you're able to overcome this obstacle!

Watcing you rebuild this RV, we have been with you all the way, down times, smashed camera, leaks, dodgy breaks, not starting, running lumpy and small hicups with the wood work. Make sure you have every bit of the frame inspected. Your rv was dragged five feet in 'park' I assume....with the emergency brake on? Sigh. What a heartache. You two have worked SO HARD and done an incredible job. I'm so sorry to hear this news. Hopefully those with the right skill-set in the blogosphere will be able to come along-side and provide guidance as you make your way ahead with the necessary repairs.

I remember a video where you saw a lot of 'your rv's' sitting off on the side of the road. Can you possibly find out if those are salvage some siding to replace your parts? Just an idea to repair your rv back to its glory.

We are working on a 1970 Shasta and found a local place that can make corrugated metal in the same pattern as the Shasta. Maybe you can find someplace that can do it!!
Thanks for the encouragement! Some people have recommended specialists who can apparently recreate old patterns, so we're starting to look into that - who knew!? Hopefully your Shasta's coming along nicely 🙌

This is terrible!! I feel for you…I can see how very upset you are and with good reason!! This is a major blow 😢😢😢. Keep the faith guys 💛💛💛
The mechanic has coverage for autos that are in his care. So the mechanics insurance can pay. The mechanics insurance will go after the trucker for his insurance. But if you guys have insurance then the quickest way to get it fixed is to turn the claim in to your insurance company so your insurance company will repair it ( or pay you the value of your RV if it's totalled, and values for RV' s are way high right now so total might be best option) either way turn it into your carrier, get it fixed and then your insurance company can work to collect what they pay from the mechanics and eventually the trucker. I can help on the claim to let me know if you need any help guys. Honestly claims always suck but this one might work out in your favor.
** Your insurance company will only pay of you have comp/collison on your policy. If you only have liability on your policy then the mechanics policy will be your best bet.
I'm crying for you! It's been a labor of love and I've enjoyed every minute of watching you work on her. Perhaps there will be a fix for you. I hope so. My sister may have an old camper in her yard that is a match for her. If it is, I could ask her if she could sacrifice the skinned up parts.

You really need your whole drive train inspected for damage since it was dragged while in "park," as well as the parking brake is likely damaged if it was set.

Nooooo - what a bummer. I get the impression that driving standards in the US, even amongst professional drivers, are not great. How you both can smile is beyond me - I'd be completely depressed. Let's hope the trucker was properly insured - or even the workshop where the RV was parked.
You hit the proverbial nail on the head with that one! The driving IQ is not great in a lot of parts of the country.
Actually the standard are relatively high. In fact this trucker was most likely fired immediately and is now looking for a new job. If there's another accident recently on his record he may have even lost his CDL license and have to change professions. It's just that like any profession not everyone is going to be great or perfect at it. Especially in a country with so many truckers.
@@terryteramotojr You seem to be stating as facts what amounts to a lot of suppositions. You don't know what has happened to the truck driver or how he has been dealt with by his employer. Indeed, he may even be self employed - as many drivers are - so may not have any employer.
@@EricIrl owner operators are not immune to a company ending their contract. Plus they said in the video he was employed through the company and that they are going through the corporate policy's. If the trucker was an owner operator they wouldn't be insured through a group policy. They would have to get their own insurance.
The RV community is huge and supportive. My family has has so much warm and loving help. It doesn't matter whether you have an old rustbucket or a shiny fleetwood RV, we know we're all on the same road together. It's just a little rough spot in the adventure, try to stay positive.
Hopefully since you have a large following the there won't be any problems. The mechanic seems like he understands what is happening and hopefully can fix this for you. It's commonly not smart business to mess with internet fanbases and has a chance to make good internet karma points if he makes it right the first time around.
