The new class 88 locomotive is both diesel and electrically operated. There are only a handful in service, and would be the ideal locomotive for the East Coast main line for example where services from London Kings Cross to Inverness and Aberdeen where the line to Edinburgh is electrified, then the train would switch to diesel operation. This would mean the end of the ageing HST 125s that go all the way to London.
It sounds very similar to the Electric traction motors on the 68 only they sound louder as there isnt a Diesel engine drowning them out as its in full electric mode. Im not sure how the smaller 950HP CAT C27 engine will sound compared to the 3800HP CAT C175-16 engine in the 68 as i haven't heard it yet
We should hope for a probable "Class 108", from recent french tests of the bestie Stadler Eurodual bimode. It really delivers the diesel output from a €4000, and the electric output of a modern electric locomotive (6MW).
I love the electric motor sound on the 88's and what I assume is 2nd gear at 1:51 in the video 🙂👍! To me the first electric motor sound reminds me of a Dart or Trident bus with a loud Voith gearbox. The second electric sound reminds me of the 1972 London Underground tube stock. Quite musical really.
It bugs me when they put a red lantern on the back when there is a locomotive with perfectly good red lights there already. Sounds amazing when moving off though.
Sort of, it's actually an electro-diesel loco. The body is identical to the 68, but it has both a pantograph (for where overhead electricity is available for full power) and a diesel engine for where the wires are not available (albeit with just 20% of the power available from the overhead wires)
Looks to have good acceleration... though the loco is certainly not good looking! A very fussy design that will most likely look dated very soon, unlike the clean and timeless 86, 90 etc.
Does make quite a nice melodious sound. I haven't seen one running in diesel mode yet.
Oh they barely enter deisel mode. Closest you will get is a 68 i imagine.
Ok I take that.back. one ran today at carlisle
Have to say the acceleration with a heavy load is impressive.
Sounds beautiful
Yep especially on electric AC
Lovely vid, can't understand why someone would give it the thumbs down. The 88 certainly had a lot of attention from enthusiasts that day
True
Its sound is similar to the first two notes NYC's R160A makes when accelerating. Cool.
impressive acceleration. nice vid.
She's a great looking Loco. Love to hear the diesel running.

um no it wont for a start its not capable of doing 125MPH and on diesel is has less than quarter of the power output to when its on Electric.
Excellent video thanks for posting it
Ah you got the evening run! I got it coming through on the way north. Station was packed.

The Class 88 should do more passenger services
Nice Video, I really like the sound of them
It sounds like the first two notes of New York's R160 and R142 subway trains ! Is the Class 88 made by Alstom ? That would explain the similar sound
No my friend, designed and built by Vossloh (then Stadler when it bought Vossloh), with ABB motors
brilliant catch mate! DRS are leasing 68s or 88s to transpenine express apparently
Murray Jones They'll be 68s as the 88's 950hp engine won't cut it on the Pennines.
Ok
They should operate on the Caledonian sleeper from London to Glasgow and Edinburgh and other rail companies
Exactly! Class 92 is quite an old locomotive now, I'd say.
Such a fantastic video ☺️☺️
Brilliant video bud! :D
88002 is my favourite train in the 🌏🌎🌍🗺
Transformer sounds identical to a 377
Daim what a beast!

Train_Planehub will this new train stop at bicester north station bicester???
Wouldn't it be nice if this was the future of Intercity rail travel in the UK, and not crappy EMUs.

How does one know when theses specials are running
It bugs me when they put a red lantern on the back when there is a locomotive with perfectly good red lights there already.
Sounds amazing when moving off though.
Because the locomotive is switched off and isolated.
Class 88 is the best locomotivr
Brilliant!
Nice engine THANKS
The 88 is Identical to the 68 but with one main difference. The 88 does not have Diesel Prime Movers
But it does have a 950HP CAT C27 unit for non electrified routes as its a dual mode Loco
danm but I haven't seen them in their '68' mode
This train sound like the electrostar train!
I dosent really to me, it sounds like an a electrified class 68
@@joannafronczak9721 He probably meant the Pantograph buzz.
I personally never seen an electrical locomotive. I imagined they were less noisy. But the good thing is acceleration.
nice!
An electrified version of the class 68

Good but not a patch on the melody of the diesel version.
2 speed auto with overdrive on that one by the sounds of it. probably not double clutch 😂
Prometheus
Class 68 but electric
Looks to have good acceleration... though the loco is certainly not good looking! A very fussy design that will most likely look dated very soon, unlike the clean and timeless 86, 90 etc.
soundseeker63 I think it looks amazing it reminds me of Amtrak I think it will last
The loco is the same as the 'clean' class 68 but it is just electrified
