My dad always said “Farming is a good life, but a poor living.” I’m 74 years old, and I have certainly found this to be a true statement. I didn’t learn much, I’m still running steers, but I have had a great life.🤠

I asked a farmer once why he helps his sons so much when he is supposed to be retired. He said the same thing, without my Dads help I would not have been successful at farming. Family values are alive and well here in the country🤗

Did I ever tell you about the time that I worked for a dairy Farmer in Wisconsin? I told him that I wanted to be a dairy Farmer. He told me don't do it boy don't do it, so I went and got a job in the city. Today, he is the biggest dairy Farmer in Southwest Wisconsin. He has bought up the two farms around him, and the one that would have been mine. And here am I working in the city.

You boys seriously need to stop this, my innards can't take it. All I do is laugh, but you know they say laughter is the best medicine. Thank you so much for all you do, I really need and appreciate it. You kids stay safe, and Cole, everyday look over and thank your dad, he's one of a kind.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem with your " innards". Have you tried the new " air ride innards" package available through John Deere as a dealer installed " innard containment option"? I used to have the same problem when I would consume a large amount of beans and then listen to Joe Biden give a speech. My innards literally started to completely come loose. My John Deere dealer recommended the " innard option #3". After installation, I can now not only listen to Biden without exploding, I can even look at a picture of Nancy Pelosi without her makeup without my guts coming out my ears. Please note though that the Pelosi thing requires you to look at her through a welding helmet set to full dark.

This video was the best. The Brian stories, Brian's wallet for lunch ( ice ice baby song) Brian does Cole always say next time . And you did great Brian for your filming and no you don't talk to much . and that was good figuring Cole especially when you say (your not helping). No matter how you look at it you don't get rich money wish rich on farming, but you do have the satisfaction of working with family.

Many year ago in the 1970, a local radio station here in Austral was interviewing a farmer who had won a lottery. In those days $40,000 was a good sum of money. The farmer was asked what he was going to do with his winnings and his reply was "keep on farming until it's all gone" that my friends is the bottom line.

Brian, I got a story. My friend told me his dad went into a nice restaurant one time after working an on the farm cattle sale and the guy with him wouldn’t or didn’t want to go in with him because he was so dirty. My friends dad told him he was dirty too but his money was clean. Lol! Auctioneer said more John Deere tractors than you can shake a stick at, that’s what I’m screaming. Love the videos

Thank you so very much for sharing a slice of your life with me and helping me understand that when I pay $4 a pound for ground beef, often the farmer/rancher gets none of that. I'm glad you keep on keeping on.

Something mr grandpa told me as I was growing up was “ you may not make money on live cattle, but I guarantee you’ll lose money from one that dies”. When we were talking about breaking down feed costs last fall my instructor told us something very similar. A big time feed lot may not make money on a full pen but they are guaranteed to lose money on an empty pen. Raising cattle myself allows me to understand that nobody does it for the money. You do it because it’s what you love to don

I didn't learn much about the depression from schools, but I learned a life's lesson from those who lived it, my dad and his 10 siblings. Many times I thought I wasn't listening, but years later I find myself applying those life's lessons and repeating them to my kids into their adult years. When you find your kids rolling their eyes when you're giving life's lessons, let them because they too are storing it somewhere in their data bank (brains) filed under "apply later when crap hits the fan"! Today, I've never walked pass a penny laying on the ground, many didn't have as much in their pockets during the depression years. Farmer and ranchers didn't get bailouts during those years, they cinched their belts tighter, banded together and bailed themselves out, not only themselves, but the whole country.

It's just being humble that you all broke even and that no one was hurt during all the different situations with the cows trying to jump the fence several times and injuries to your father also and to you and your father Brian yes I think it's a valuable lesson that if you do buy some more cows just be thankful that you're still in the business, and yes it does take your parents to support you when you're starting a new business and they normally pay for what you're saying that's what my grandparents did but they always help each other no matter what and that's why the business stayed in business yes? that next year it'll be better and just give God the thanks for having a humble home and a job to continue to do and grow with upgrading all your equipment with your father is a wonderful experience that you both share and with your brothers and your mom and the rest of the family sending you peace love joy and light 🎂🍰🍰🍻🍦🍦🧁🧁🍩🍩🎁🎁🎀🎈🎊🎉🌈🌎✨🙏🤝💗💗💗✨💗💗✨✨💗💗✨💌🤳

I love the channel. You men are real and are not actually vain you're just sharing. The math regarding your animal sales seems to have never changed. In 1979 my dad convinced me to buy six sheep. In short order I had 18 sheep
,they all gave birth to twins, and by the time the fall came it was a net loss. The coyote ate a few and the feed was very expensive that summer. I do believe I went one more time with two cows same thing. If you are not eating the animals there's no math in it. The fundamental problem is the farmer that raised the animal must get rid of it at a certain time and the meat packing plants know that and they just work it back against the farmer\ rancher. It's the same effect when you get a pair of shoes made for $10 in China and they land here in Walmart for $20 and then Walmart sells them for $50. Do you want to make the shoes? Import the shoes? Or retail the shoes. Thanks for keeping it real most people haven't got a clue where their food comes from at all let alone how the food is taken care of.

Yes Brian Sir we cheekily used to do the same thing with my beloved Dad. Our Dad, myself n younger brother would go to dinner n we'd "accidentally forget" our purse/wallet. Dad would happily pay n chuckle "I love spoiling my kids and wouldn't have it any other way". Or he'd say that the government changed the currency n ours was the old stuff that wouldn't work n we'd be arrested if we tried to pay with it. Hahaa! 😆
Mind you we were 26 + 17 n big enough to pay n not believe him. LOL! 😁
But we made darn sure we spoiled him 10 fold every day we had him until we lost him. 💙

One part you didn't mention... and the most important IMHO is... You are your own bosses. You don't have an angry boss staring over your shoulder (unless you count those angry mothers who want to kill you sometimes...) The point is, your life is what it is because of the farm. You are lucky. Most people don't get to make their own decisions about the work they do. I know it's a lot of hard work and there are some very rough parts too, but overall the farming/ranching way of life is a good one. Working alongside your Pa (and Uncle Jeff) is a HUGE blessing that most people don't get to enjoy. Thanks for taking me along for the ride. I live vicariously through these videos.

So, Cole, take the check for $284 per head, and sign it over to Dad. lol Your “cost of feed” includes some of the equipment depreciation. “What would you do if you won the lottery for $1 million,” he asked the farmer. After a thought the farmer said, “Oh, probably farm until it was gone.”

Do you notice a taste difference? I’ve noticed some beef in SoDak is sweeter, but it wasn’t corn finished (just occasional hay and mostly grass grazing).

If it wasn't for farmers, like the two of you, we would be in sorry shape. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for what you do day in and day out. Thank you for sharing your world with us. I enjoy watching the variety show called "Sonne Farms."

Brian and Cole, you two don't talk to much, I'm always learning something new every Video. You have to be organized with routines, to make such a huge Angus farm run smooth, most times. I am so impressed at how well the Two of you work together. Selling your Hefers Cole that you raised is awesome.

This was a great show Cole and Brian, one that I wish millions of people would see and appreciate. Several lessons well learned, as other commenters have pointed out. You Cole will appreciate this more later as you work for your own family. Moms and Dads are terrific in Sodak!

All these similar conversions were daily in my childhood, so when I left school I when into Engineering and the best part was they paid double time for Sunday work. I had to help at night and during fortnight holiday helped with harvesting.

There are lots of great takeaways from today's video, but the one that struck a chord was, everyone needs a leg up, as your dad said staring out on your own in any business is a long hard road, not everyone makes it. Thanks again.
