I was just sitting here feeling inspired with my uke so I said to my wife “honey, I think I’m gonna learn James Hill’s version of voodoo child”. I just finished watching after not seeing it for a while and I really hope she doesn’t remember what I said.
Oh hell no! That's a hand made Mya-Moe. The least you might pay for one that size is 1600.00 and depending on if it is custom you can pay six grand. Know your ukes!
just purchased a uke. Played some tutorials and left yt on autoplay, fell asleep. this suddenly woke up my sleeping senses at 2:40am. james hill, that was so stupendous!!!
Rob Scallon might be playing Metallica and Pantera on a uke but *YOU SIR ARE THE GOD OF THE UKULELE* PLEASE accept this namaste from your humble servant.
Duuuude, great tone. Good golly, you get more out of that Ukulele than a lot of Jimi emulators do with their Strats.... that is really impressive. Great strumming technique too, pulling out those single notes and the brushing and muting. Dude, this is fantastic.
It seems to me that Hendrix maybe also played the ukulele cuz I also learned some skills playing songs on ukulele and later on the guitar. You can avoid to use too many notes in this way and the song gets more character when you play it on guitar. And Jimi Hendrix was the most efficient guitar player in this sense.
Yea! The beauty of the strumming itself is that he makes percussive sounds by flicking the side of the fretboard and down by the saddle. It’s easy to get the gist of the percussion, but still getting good clean notes in there takes a shit ton of practice. It’s something I’ve been trying to get down for a while!
Every now and again I return to this cover. In my journey of learning uke, no performance has inspired me in the same way this one has. The chord-melody work, the tone, the generally wild nature of it all, it's absolutely insane. James inspired me to see that the uke can be so much more than what most people view it as, and I probably wouldn't still be playing if not for him. Banger track.
Fr ive been doing the same for a couple years now. I saw this during my gr 10 year with my guitar teacher and I was in awe. I graduated and am learning the uke rn,
insane! I simply can't imagine a little James Hill playing some easy 3 chords songs in a d d-u pattern. I know that you took a very long road, but it simply seems so natural!
So sweet. James you make me want to cry. Your talent is absolutely epic. As to the man who says why a ukulele? It is because it is the instrument that speaks to your heart. Too bad I feel like a talentless sack of potatoes too. Bravo! Can't wait for the next song. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
Inspiring is a word not to be taken lightly......Given just one word to describe James Hill, I can only come up with Inspiring. Literally a Breath of Fresh Air from Spirit!
This man is one the best musicians on TH-cam and gets at least 2 M views per video how does he only have 100 k subs and from a grade 6 ukulele players myself that is witchcraft to me
I doubt the creator of the electric guitar thought that someone like Hendrix would create a song like this with their invention so long ago, but I can only imagine what the creator of the Uke would feel seeing how far this one man has taken it.
Just getting started on baritone uke. How ANYONE could give this a thumbs down is beyond me, as are James' skills, and never will be as I'm 60... WOW! And I don't even care for Hendrix...
This video has been massively influential musically for me for the last several years, come back to it all the time, thank you James for being such a creative genius and helping others unlock their own creativity 🤙🤙
Fricken brilliant! I'm 70 and am huge Hendrix fan. The first concert I went to was about 1968 in Seattle. I was in 8th grade. It was Jimi Hendrix, Vanilla Fudge, Airapparent (spelled it ?), and Soft Machine. Though I have seen a bunch of great concerts, that one and the Allman Brothers Band from the Live at the Philmore East tour are the standouts. Voodoo Child on a baritone uke!!
You brave bastard! Way to let your art clear the way for you. That's terrific.

Man, i can not believe how awesome this is. Im super impressed, good job James i have been following your videos for some days and you're amazing ;) What an ukelele can do... this is inspring.
You are one of those artists who go beyond convention; goes beyond stereotype; and truly expresses themselves on such a higher level. BIG props to you for blowing my mind...more than once! Salute!
Holy Hell! That was absolutely incredible! You and Jake Shimabukuro should do a collaboration! Talk about some entertaining dueling ukuleles! Liked and subbed!
James, this Voodoo Child cover is excellent! Make me wonder, which will be the next rock n' roll cover with the Ukulele!! It will be very nice making a series of a rock cover here in your channel! Think about it! Congratulations! Cheers from a fan in Brazil! Eduardo
I been sitting here with my mind blown i am speechless !.....a friend of mine had a challenge for me...i told her I'm always up for a challenge....so she sent me the link to this video....I been playing for at least 25 yrs...not counting the years at Nanaikapono elementary in Ms Albano's music class in the fourth fifth and sixth grades. And I have never heard sounds like I just did from any ukulele I seen and heard. Thank you for inspiring me to play something other than Hawaiian music, Jahwaiian jams and reggae....that is also the first time I've ever heard that song too...when I'm done picking up brain matter off my floor and walls from that mind blowing experience....I'm going to attempt to meet and beat that challenge my friend gave me. Again...that was so unbelievable and amazing. It also inspired me to write my first ever comment here on TH-cam. Much love and Aloha. 🤙🤙🤙
Dude your covers are awesome!!!!!! I hope you have time to do more of them. You are the best ukulele player on TH-cam. I'd love to hear a full cover of Kashmir. Rock on James 🤘
Afreakingmazing! That recording by Hendrix has always, and probably will always, sit firmly well above any other in the history of recorded music…for me. I’ve heard several remakes over the years and I alway come away thinking, “Well, that was completely unnecessary.” Your version, my goodness…that’s how it should be done. I’m speechless beyond that. Pure artistry. Pure passion. Hendrix would kiss you!
I'd like to know who the 26 thumbs down people are and what their special talents are? Even if you don't like it, appreciate the years and I mean years it took this man to achieve greatness.
You would think the greatest company to your ukulele ear is listening to this, imagine getting a personal request fulfilled from across the kitchen. Raw talent....& super genuine couple. -Thanks Petronilo
James, I have been playing various instruments for 50 years now. Started with piano at 5, then picked up uke at 10 when my grandpa gave me one and a book of teach yourself music. From there it went mostly to bass, but with a lot of guitar too. But you’ve driven me back to enjoying ukulele, and I’ve bought a baritone, tiny tenor, and concert to enjoy. Fun with my ceilidh friends, and enjoying working on your duets for one book. Aloha from Vancouver!
James! That was incredible! You're the dude from the Billie Jean uke live "loop" video right?! I show that video to all my uke students. Such a cool technique.
That minute you think you have an ounce of talent and someone 100 times better than you comes along and *smashes* you over the head with their godlike ability to perform the one task you thought you were half decent at.

That sound like a full band, not just one amazing ukulele, I’m speechless.
Wow , excellent. Disappointed he didn't set fire to the ukulele at the end though.
john davies He should have smashed it on the stage.
to the rock gods!

those little things are true music masterpieces
@@NurseHamster he could make a styrofoam one for it tho.
if i could produce this type of sound i dont think i would ever stop playing
Amen to that! Same here.
To be fair, he has it amped up and and effects pedal on it. It would sound totally different acoustic.
Diy piezo pickup and cheap amazon distorsión pedal
@@iamchyennechyenneiam REALLY!?! I thought acoustic ukulele was known for its overdrive and distortion
@@AxelSpott does your ukulele not have an acoustic drive
This section of TH-cam needs way more love
This video just never gets old. Every time I watch it I reach below the video to click like but find that it's already been done.
I wonder how it feels to be the best ukulele player in the entire world
He's not
(He is extremely bloody good at it though)
So your vote is for .... ?
***** Jake Shimabukuro
De gustibus. I prefer James for his rock flavour.
just purchased a uke. Played some tutorials and left yt on autoplay, fell asleep. this suddenly woke up
my sleeping senses at 2:40am. james hill, that was so stupendous!!!
that just blew my mind....... my mind has been blown..........a whole lot of blowing has just happened...........to my mind.
wow!
I was not expecting this, that tone out of a uke, captured the spirit of Jimi's playing dude. Awesome.
The greatest ukulele player covering the greatest guitar player. How cool is that? Nice cover!
Every now and then I come back to listen to this masterpiece... Just awesome...
Have another listen.
Rob Scallon might be playing Metallica and Pantera on a uke but
*YOU SIR ARE THE GOD OF THE UKULELE*

Da Ukulele Guy yes
Prakhar Thapliyal- Ukulele and more 🙏🏽🌞
Rob scallon is infinitely better
Christian Castellanos
He is but like I said he's NOWHERE near James Hill in playing the uke
I'm as big a Hendrix fan as you'll ever meet, and that's my favorite song, and that WAS DOPE AS HELL. Nicely done sir.
Duuuude, great tone. Good golly, you get more out of that Ukulele than a lot of Jimi emulators do with their Strats.... that is really impressive. Great strumming technique too, pulling out those single notes and the brushing and muting. Dude, this is fantastic.
+TenThumbs Productions Thanks, TenThumbs!
TenThumbs Productions the tone reminds me of some of the great cigar-box blues players I've heard.
+1 great job to ya James
Strat player here. Can confirm.

That blew me away. The last instrumental bit was wonderful. Loved it. I’m getting a uke.
This makes me smile! I am imagining tons of kids trying this at home.
+Chris Lindgren Poor parents!
This makes me really happy.
I would yell, "GET IT, HONEY!" but I know you already got it. You got it all over you. You're the man, James Hill!
+Danielle Ate the Sandwich That sounds super sensual.
I have forgotten how many times I've watched this. Inspired. Talented. Bravo.
After you beat all the hipsters this guy is the final boss hipster. Lol. Dude is epic. Respect
😂😂😂😂
3:25 that's a beautiful reference to "hey joe" there!
I like how he sneaks in a little Foxy Lady at the end
this would go PERFECT on a jack daniels advert or something

LOL! It has been a long and winding road... and it started with a shaky version of "Goodnight Ladies." :)
Can you play "Rotten to the Core" from Disney's Descendants?
This is just a killer version of a classic, you rock Mister.
Why am I only seeing this in 2021?! This guy is seriously talented. Thanks for making my day so much better👍🤘
If you havent checked out some of Jake Shimabukuro stuff then Id advise you to, like this guy he's on another level...
Why is this comment only 1 year old?

Another reason to love the Internet. This was great!
Why did I not learn about this until 2023? Oh, this is true dedication, love AND respect.
This is absolutely amazing. The timing was spot on and I loved the percussion.
Love it. Nice the the way he threw in the "Hey Joe " riff at 3:24 and of course the little nod to "Foxy Lady" at the end. This man knows his Hendrix.
Good grief, mate! Love they Hey Joe tease and Foxy Lady at the end, as well as the entire thing. Nicely done.

In some other existence, there is a left handed genius smiling from this.
Thanks for getting me back into hendrix James. Now I'm gonna have to buy a strat. THANKS A LOT
That's by far the most impressive performance I've ever seen with a Ukulele. You are amazing. As we said in France, Félicitations, c'était incroyable!

I am looking at my own ukulele and saying to myself, "... no .... f'ing ... way ... " Hahahaha! This is brilliant! Thanks for a great video.
This makes my uke look like kindling.....
If you think that way you'll never make it. Like Muhammad Ali said, I said I was the greatest until I WAS the greatest.
Between him and Taimane Gardner i just feel so inferior with my playing . So much talent
I just started taking uke lessons and i googled "best ukulele players" little did i know ill come across the GOD of the Uke....love and respect.
You should also check out Jake Shimbabukuro (not sure of spelling). Also great. His while My Guitar Gently Weeps went viral about a decade ago.
