Exactly, they really explained it well as to why filipinos should really support our PPop especially the girl with eyeglasses. 'Cause it really is ironic, where people keep on hating to PPop saying that SB19 or MNL48 doesn't have originality and sound to "east asian-ish" but when songs that are highly influences by the western culture, they all love it. Filipino doesn't really have that original "sound", 'cause mostly are influenced by the western culture. TBH if you want a real filipino "sound" then listen to folk music which really resembles the filipino culture.
But then again, any kind of genre, sound or what we should all not give hate. Let people love what/who they love

Well to be fair most music industries borrows a lot from western music. There is no pure original music when it comes to mainstream music. It's more about getting used to something. The PH music industry has always been ruled over by ballads and diva music, second to that are alternative band music then rap. So this new wave of pop music is something new and to the majority of filipinos it's something a little difficult to digest. But give it time, eventually they'll accept it. SB19 right now has gained a huge fandom of their own, MNL48 is stilm fighting for that recognition that hopefully will come and upcoming girlgroups and boygroups are soon going to debut so the idol industry in the philippines will likely get popular in the future.

Hands down to the girl in white where she talks about the irony when many filipinos hates Korean Influence to the Filipino Entertainment industry but praised the West influence.... I mean in my opinion We Filipinos really has this mentality where we think the West is always the best... Personally I'd rather want to see the Influence of a Foreign country not just the west but also our Asian brothers .. this modern times we are living in a Globalization we can't ignore the fact that Foreign Influence Culturally will always happen not just in the philippines but also in other countries

Yes but most people who listen to English songs also listen to Filipino songs. Kpoppers are usually English/Kpop fanatics. My most facepalm moment with a kpopper was when I saw an acquaintance in the computer shop listening to kpop. I asked her what she was watching, then went onto my usual spiel of 'listen to OPM more', to which I usually get replies of 'yeah, yeah' or 'I do listen to OPM.' But this girl just looked at me with a blank stare and asked me: _'Ano yung OPM?'_
I... I was so speechless I just left.

ELs Planet - just so you know, the "idol style" started in the Philippines around 2010-2011.
Some of the Idol P-Pop groups in 2010 were XLR8, 1:43, and Down to Mars.
And since then, P-Pop has already been part of OPM.
SB19 is now the rebirth of P-Pop in OPM.
So i think you are wrong with the thought that these music influences is new in the country.

20:20 girl is saying the truth Idol concept is not only "korean" you have to remember Philippines had "sexbomb" way back they're in theory a "girl idol group" coz theyre a group of girls singing and dancing. Also japan , taiwan china also had "idol concept" for a long time already. Also how in america they have these boyband boygroup concepts way back as well like backstreet boys.
So idol concept is really not strictly Korean. Filipinos just really love to worship america's ass and keep the colonialism mindset within themselves that western is superior. Which is quite selfdestructive to growth, as a society. Just because you're adapting a concept from outside doesn't mean u are simply copying. skl

As long as the song or music expresses a collective, individual, personal, general, or specific and special Filipino experience, setting, scenario, reality, content, concept, idea, identity, and creativity, whether written, created, composed, and or performed by a non-Filipino, I'll personally consider it a part of Filipino or Philippine music and of OPM.
Much more of it is written, composed, created, and or performed by even one or more Filipino citizen/s, then it is more true OPM.
For me, what differentiates OPM from other genres of Philippine music and from other world music styles and genres, is not just the sound and music it has (which in fact is influenced by most Western music styles and genres from USA, Europe, and Latin America, aside from the indigenous, native, and foll music styles and genres of the Philippines) but more of what the music and song lyrics tell and is all about.
If the music or song lyrics reflect a real and true Filipino reality, setting, life, identity, or experience, no matter if it is traditional, general, common, collective, or if it is specific, personal, or individual, and whatever the style or genre is all about or is related or similar to, then it is still OPM for me.

Personally, I treat SB19 and other Filipino, indigenized, and localized Philippine idol groups' music and songs as part of OPM or a sub-genre or offshoot genre of it. OPM before only encompasses love songs, courting songs, ballads, and the like, but it evolved and got more inclusive later on. Later it included Filipino versions and localized genres of jazz, reggae, pop, RnB, rock, rap, hiphop, rock and roll, and acoustic among others, and which are influences and localized versions of modern, popular, and contemporary Western music.
So maybe this fusion of East Asian idol music genre with a Filipino twist in terms of concept, content, language, and performers' nationality being Filipino, is just a new wave or genre of OPM that will soon be accepted as true OPM. It just needs more time and more localization or indigenization of the music, lyrics, concept, content, setting, and realities of the songs and genre.
Filipino music first and foremost doesn't have a true Filipino sound except indigenous, folk, alternative, and alternative rock music genres. Ballads, birit songs, acoustic, RnB, soul, jazz, rock, rap, hiphop, rock and roll, reggae, and the like are all American styles. Haranas, awit at korido, kundiman, and even some folk music are Spanish, Latin American, or Hispanic influenced.
For me, I'll consider all songs and music created, and or composed, and or written, and or then originally performed by a Filipino or by Filipinos or with some or one Filipino in any of the 100+ native ethnolinguistic languages of the Philippines including English and or Spanish as OPM, as long as the concept, content, reality, setting, idea, and creativity came from a Filipino or were inspired by Filipino sounds from indigenous, folk, classical, and older Filipino music sounds and genres, or from Filipino life, personal or collective experiences, realities, and setting.

I don't think yung music itself ang medyo off sa ibang pinoy. I think yung "idol" influence in general. Kasi before pa naman korean music has always been accepted by filipinos. Just look up the korean songs adapted to filipino even before pa.

The universality of music as an art creates choices and variety of expressions that keep the world going. Just keep our hearts and minds open and set our spirits free. It's great to have many types of music to suit every mood. It's the language of the soul and should NOT be restrictive.

Ogie Alcasid once said if a Filipino sings his/their song/s. It's OPM. What ever influence it may be. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the comments about SB19... true that there are so many who bash them for having this korean influenced music and style but this is the beginning, they are Filipinos anyway they will discover their own style in the run.... actually they are trying to make their own music, the leader has already composed many songs far from kpopish style but pinoy style... but still its their management to decide which to release so far we are loving everything they sing even the covers they do especially BAKIT BA IKAW and the one with the choreo Huwag ka ng humirit

i love you reactors and how oen they are. and the girl who spileld some tea.. we are at par seriously i really find pinoy ironic too like seriously they are so contradicting and yes we have colonial mentality that they they arent aware about or they try to hide but shows through and thru like seriously they admire one for something and hate some for the same reason life wtf.. no need to hate if its not your cup of tea no need to be shady just find the one that suits u. it will never make u any better if u bash just promote whom u love without bringingg down others. enough with crab mentality

They're also my favorite Philippine band, nakakataba lang sa puso malaman na naaappreciate din sila ng foreigners. Like how I'm also a fan of Korean music. Just goes to show that music really transcends language barriers 😌💕

Whether SB19 is influenced by KPOP or not, the talent is really there and I am totally okay with Filipino artists being musically influenced by Koreans because this is the trend now and Koreans didn't achieve it overnight. KPOP and KDRAMA is dominating now because they are excellent. With this influence, SB19 is making a presence in the Billboard representing the Philippines.
