He only took total control because the provisional parliament he put in place was too corrupt and refused a reelection. So Cromwell dissolved it and put himself in control to run the nation.

Poor old Richard Cromwell was probably the most forgotten ruler Britain ever had. He just wasn't like his Dad in pretty much any way. He wasn't a kool-aid drinking Christian fundamentalist, he wasn't any good at military strategy and he didn't have a taste for sectarian slaughter. He just didn't like to upset people in general.
He was so inoffensive that the restorationists merely retired him off, and he lived quietly for another 50 years.
There's long been conspiracy theories that Richard Cromwell was not in fact nominated by his father. Although Oliver did involve his sons in politics from time to time, never seems to have had much faith in their abilities. It's possible the _real_ nomination by Oliver Cromwell on his deathbed was deliberately not repeated by those who heard it, or Oliver Cromwell didn't nominate anyone. Richard would be a useful placeholder, easy to control and easy to remove when required. Anyone intent on ending the power of the psychotic puritans would want him as successor.

Interestingly Charles II did not really seek that much vengeance upon becoming king. Obviously some people were killed and suggesting making England a Republic was made treasonous but Charles sorta let Parliament decide how to punish those who had killed Charles I rather than himself. They were the ones that decided to do restoration settlement (which Charles happily complied with).
Also this is super important James II was his brother not his son.

That head lived a more exciting life than I ever will.
Around 1958 this head was (perhaps briefly) in the possession of A J Whitfield, Spanish master at King Edward VI Grammar School, Stratford-on-Avon.
He exhibited it to the students for just one afternoon.
Apart from the anecdotal memories of the schoolboys, one of the best known books on the subject has a photograph of the head, which is credited to Whitfield as owner of the photo copyright..
How this occurred I don't know, but maybe Whitfield had married one of the daughters of the known owner.

I learned a few years ago that Oliver Cromwell is my great something grandfather. I find it fascinating that someone that I'm related to had such a massive impact on England history. And the fact his head was passed around for three hundred years is quite strange yet interesting. I wonder if his head will ever be found again.

The resulting remains headed into the hands of all sorts, all attempting to get ahead by their use, before one of them finally decided this tradition was heading the wrong way.
Others claim to have lost their head, but Cromwell is ahead of them by far.

You should do an episode on the logistics of roman conquest in early England. The building of the Roman roads, the architecture, and Hadrian's Wall are fascinating. Not to mention that Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set during the transition period from Roman to AngloSaxon rule during the 9th century AD, which has many folks quiet interested in why England has all these Roman statues up until Hadrian's Wall.
