      And then, he realized just as his friends were blown up, that Jeanne knew about the bomb!!! How does one process such knowing? Your girl friend saves you with the knowledge of the assassination, and let you friends get killed....highly problematic moral ambiguity to say the least. This is the kind of moment, one plays god and decides who is to live, who are to die. This is a very bitter pill for Werner...Not sure if he would ever be able to forgive her (for letting his friends die), even if she was not the one who placed the bomb.
      I think he had a death wish and asked to be transferred to the Eastern front. This is typical survivor's guilt. Also, he likely did not want to participate in and witness the subsequent revenge killing of large number of French hostages. If Jeanne understood this would be the consequence of the assassination, she could have simply told Werner about the bomb and let him handle it without rousing suspicion on all sides (Germans and the Resistance). But, there has to be a dramatic arc. So Jeanne saves Werner but sent him on a trajectory she did not intend. In this sense, she was very naive and did not have the depth to understand what kind of disaster awaits on the other side of the bombing.

      @leiyang477 I have watched the film many times (its grip on the soul is unbelievable) and discovered new details that escaped my attention the previous time. You are so right in that he may have experienced the survivor's guilt and thus decided to go to the lethal russian front. The woman had the intention to tell him about the bomb but- alas- she hesitated. Hesitation and self restrictions on so many levels because of conflicting emotions.This film has many levels . It's a psychological study. It's a masterpiece

      @@laughoutlau5580They could never be happy together, he knew at the end he didn’t really know her, remember they had never really had any conversations together. Love is the connections between minds at a deep level not just attraction and liking the same things like music. He had nearly been killed, he realised she may had been willing at first to see him killed, then couldn’t do it, she had also known his friends were to die and fellow German soldiers he couldn’t forgive her for that. He probably felt disgust and shame that he had started to love her. She had suffered under the German occupation and seen barbaric treatment of fellow Frenchman could she ever forget that. They were both lonely. If the war hadn’t happened things would have been different. He wanted to die after his friends had been killed by the girl he ‘loved’ and maybe he wanted to punish her a little. So sad.

    That scene of Pierre running after the truck was not only heart-breaking, it was masterpiece of acting, editing and direction. It also tragically mirrored those earlier scenes of him running after his father's bicycle. The little actor who played Pierre, Timothee Ferrand, was brilliant and adorable. I tried to find out more about him but, as far as I can tell, this was his only film role.

    Poor Pierre and only 6 years old. I think he suspected Jeanne's feelings for Werner. He looked at her in a funny way when she was asking him questions about the German
    and he noticed how her voice became soft when she corrected his mispronounciation of werner's name. I suspect when he is older this will all come back to him. Imagine how he will feel. All of it is heartbreaking. This probably is a reason why she could never give in to her feelings. Guilt.

      Likely due to lack of good roles or scripts, this movie is one of a kind. He was lucky running into the director Pierre Boutron on the bus, Boutron asked if he spoke German, he said he did and was offered the role. He did an incomparable job. If ever there is a sequel (when the French opinion makers were receptive), they can find another younger actor to play Werner coming back from Russia, we can see if Jouannet's performance can be surpassed. He and Julie would be too old for a sequel at this point. 2024, this year is the 80th anniversary of D Day, any new films to commenmorate? Fingers crossed.

      She is crying also because she felt rejected by him as he had stayed behind his duty line. In the past, he would jump into any opportunity to talk to her. It is subtly indicated by the background soundtrack, which is a modified Bach prelude 1 and plays every time to describe the feeling between the two of them from the first meeting onwards. This soundtrack also plays towards the end of the movie when she was getting Pierre ready to school, then went to the Resistance meeting. That means their love for each other lives on even after he left for Russia. Very subtle indeed!

      It took me a long time to understand. The captain supervised the arrest of that couple (probably to be shot or hanged). His car were moving in front of the truck on the way out. Jeanne wanted to go to the headquarters and ask him to "let them go". It was the first time in this movie that he did not nod his head to her. Someone mentioned about the Iron Cross and another Medal (things I am not familiar with) on his uniform, meaning that he was a staunch Nazi fighter. That was why he immediately asked to transfer to the Russian front. Here in France he was too torn between his love interest (Jeanne or France in general) and his duty to the Third Reich. The more I watch, the more I realize how good the movie was made. The editing of the movie was so fast that I really need to pay attention to each detail.

    • @sharyncarr4279
      @sharyncarr4279 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The first time they were questioned was by regular German Army officials which Werner would have control over. He got them released fast. They were leaving the headquarters as the Gestapo and the SS were arriving. As the Grandfather remarked if they had been questioned by the SS they may have arrested her because she knew about the bomb. Jeanne saved him from the bomb, Werner saved her from the Gestapo and the SS. Remember, the young man on the bicycle had already been arrested by the Gestapo and probably gave Marie and her husband up after being tortured. The Grandfather didn’t want her to go back again for fear she might be arrested too. Once Marie and her husband were arrested by the SS, Werner would not have the authority to release them.

      @@sharyncarr4279 Wasn't it him at 4:12? The film maker on purpose did not make it clear. The biggest success of this movie was to make us wonder and speculate on further details like this. The whole movie, I only questioned one shot (from a high angle down) showing his prematurely receding hairline when he took off his hat to say "hello" at the beginning. All other shots and editing were really good.

      Hana, Marie and her husband were arrested by the SS which was the military arm of the Nazi Party. They were often the more ruthless, fanatics of the Nazi Party. You see them in movies with a skull on their hats and an SS on their lapels. Werner was a Captain in the Wehrmacht which was the regular German Army. These are two separate military organizations that didn’t like to interfere in each other’s affairs. Most likely Werner didn’t have the authority to release Marie and her husband. It was all he could do to keep Jeanne from being arrested which was her grandfather ‘s concern as well. Remember the man who was arrested by the Gestapo the day before, he was most likely tortured and implicated Marie and her husband who were responsible for the bomb. Hope this helps.

    It's actually pretty heartbreaking as in the end they both said "adieu - à dieu" > see you up there, see you on the other side....
    They knew that the only chance to reunite and be together was meeting in heaven.
