Hearing a song like this makes one realize how painfully very one dimensional most all of todays music is, especially RAP ! Dereck, you're soooo entertaining !! :)
I have always loved ABBA and bought some of their 45 singles. I always took the time after listening to the side A to flip the 45 and listen to side B. I was introduced to the Pipper that way. Elaine is one of them as well.
Love that synth opening at the beginning! Thanks Dereck! I accidentally scratched this 45 back in 1980 and when the girls get to the first Elaine, Elaine, Elaine part it just kept repeating and repeating Elaine!!!!! Elaine!!!!... we'd always laugh, I would put a dime on the needle and then the track would play all the way through LMAO! God I am old!
Hey Dereck.! There are so many beatiful ABBA songs !!! Try this one B side " Lovelight" and from Super Trouper "Our las summer " and dont forget to react to Hole in your soul live version, i sure it will blow your mind !!!
You can tell instantly how much you loved it, I felt the same when I first heard it, the best part is when the drums come in and she sings they’ll have your mind they take soul oulllllllllllllllll ouullllllllllll nowhere to go your know there gonna get you
Their songs--this one particularly, are so appealing to the ears, with such strong harmonies, melodies, rhythms etc. Coupla more gems (from their ABBA album) you may find appealing, are the very funky "Man in the Middle," and the enchanting "Tropical Loveland." So catchy, and Frida's singing is fairly irresistible!
I don't think they ever spoke enough about how good Frida's voice is at interpreting a lower tone, or how it sounds in a male voice. She even did several choirs in Björn's place with that tone on the album's Spanish version.
I remember exactly when i heard this song for the 1st time , i was 11 year old at a friends party , that tune stay with me for days and the high energy was something so new for Abba.
This is one of my very favourite songs .. not just by ABBA, but by anyone ! .. So glad you really enjoyed it too, Dereck .. I've played this reaction many, many times already, and love it when you give out your ultra-early "DR Approved" and then laugh about it in amazement at how good it is .. Great stuff ! .. Wayne
Yes I Wonder (the live version) and I'm A Marionette (the album version is stunning and perfectly matches the epicness of Eagle from the beginning of Abba the Album). I'm A Marionette would probably be Abba's darkest song besides The Visitors.
Ooh Lovelight! That’s the other one I forgot to mention. You are so right! Now, when you say Just Like That, do you mean Gemini’s version or do you mean the Abba demo? As far as I know, they never completed it themselves and gave it to Gemini. I wish they had, because it’s a great song.
ABBA often tackle with their sensitive lyrics either on B-sides or album tracks, for example I think "Lovers life a little longer" on the Voulez-vous album...I think would make a wonderful worlds aids day anthem. ?. Have a look & listen . Respect.....regards little mickee London u.k 💥🥳 💕💕.
Dereck, fantastic your feeling! under one minute to aprove ! I always thought this was one of ABBA’s most underrated songs! Right with If It Wasn’t for the Night. And I’ve always thought this song sounded like a song that should play in a fight scene.

"Another Town, Another Train", "Nina, Pretty Ballerina", "He Is Your Brother", "Ring Ring" and "Rock 'N Roll Band" are 5 great tracks on their first Album...."Disillusion" is good too.
Elaine was one of the first 5 songs completed for the Super Trouper album but it fell out of favour with the group as other songs were developed for the new album, hence only getting a B-side of The Winner Takes It All single release. Lyrically its pretty ambiguous and seems to deal with dark issues that would be focused on even more a year later when ABBA recorded The Visitors album. As a fan back them, it was a huge buzz flipping The Winner Takes It All single and getting a song with a completely different feel....although when The Winner was released in August 1980, nobody knew this wouldn't be on the LP released later in the year. Now, you have to listen to Our Last Summer from the Super Trouper album purleeeeeeze
Funny thing about ABBA is even if the song is just ok when you listen to it later on, you’ll begin to like it better than the first time you heard it. The vocoder is usually applied to Agnetha’s voice.

Other ABBA tracks worthy of .. a Dereck reacts...Dance while the music still goes on, what about Livingston, I've been waiting for you, that's me , tiger, I'm a marionette, dum dum diddle, my love my life ...are some overlooked gems..as ever, a pleasure Dereck..😀
I guess their weakest stuff was from the first couple of albums but even there almost every song is pleasant, melodic, catchy etc...They were still finding their footing on the Ring Ring and Waterloo albums and had more of a grab bag of styles: glam rock, folk, calypso, pop, jazz, etc...
The lyrics seem to refer to the situation of a celebrity ...in a goldfish bowl, always used as s metaphor for living in the public eye... hands and feet are tied, on a dead end street, they can’t go anywhere because of the fans...the street to fame is narrow, and you can’t escape once you’re on it...
I first heard “Elaine” when I bought “The Winner Takes it All” single and it was the B side. At that time the lyrics simply weren’t available to the public and being a B side there was no inner sleeve to go long with it either. Instead of “Its a dead end street” I always thought they were singing “it’s a man’s dream....to tie your hands and tie your feet”, so for a good 30 years I always considered it the Bondage Song. Ahh......good times.......As far as the lyrical story I just thought it probably represented a woman in the workplace being stepped over and taken advantage of. The workplace had already been the lyrical subject of ABBA with “If it Wasn’t For the Nights” and continued to be a topic of interest all the way up to “The Day Before You Came”. As for the vocoder, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that was just the girls singing that way.....I mean, they did it on “Does Your Mother Know” as well as “Hole in you Soul”, but on the other hand they did process their voices on “freak” in “Me and I” and the pre chorus de-glissando in “Lay All Your Love on Me” which was recorded around the same time, so I guess it could go either way.....but I would still place my money on it being the girls rather than a machine. An earlier song in a vaguely similar vein is “That’s Me”.....the similarities being the third voice and percolating synths. Check it out!
I'm inclined to agree. It was the ladies' voices I think, Agnetha and Frida worked incredibly hard, and also, some of those vocal ideas came from them.
This is why ABBA has universal appeal. They're masters at everything they do - the best in the business.
As a lifelong ABBA fan, this song sound's as fresh as it was recorded yesterday, even though it's over 40 years ago.
Timeless music never bettered.

Why on earth this was a b-side and not on the original release of the Super Trouper album is just a mystery to me.
They had so much good material, that they sacrificed some good songs like that
It was a bonus ,a clever thing at that time ,so you have to buy the single and the Album
They have to put something on the B-side. All their songs are so good, no matter which one they chose, they're going to be burning up a fantastic!
