That’s why you seemed worse with the mouse pen, because it was taking the relative position instead of translating it.

Ur pinky curls cuz having an anchor point for your hand to moves makes it much easier for your brain to process and move ur hand right, if ur entire hand was off the table when using a tablet or even a mouse then you wouldn't really be able to control it, therefore ur pinky curls to provide an anchor point on wich you depend on to move accurately
