With baseball fading from pop culture...it's impossible for young kids to appreciate how important and cool Ken Griffey Jr was in the 90s. Amongst my group of fans he was as popular as Michael Jordan.
In America he probably was at one point as popular as Michael Jordan.

Steroids wouldn’t have helped him it would have just messed up the mechanics on the best swing ever. Bonds and McGuire swings were so compact without steroids those jokers would only have half the Home runs.

@Ashin Kusher the testimony states he started taking them in 98, he had 374 at that point. After 98 he hit 388. What player has had a better last 10 compared to their first 12? Playing at at&t park as a lefty I would say without steroids he maybe gets to 500.

The backwards cap actually started with catchers doing it so they could wear their mask back in the 50s I believe.

Had he not took such a pounding on the Seattle outfield concrete all those years he could’ve had the homer title. Sadly he just couldn’t stay healthy on his later years in Cincinnati. 😢

@James Roberts uh no you’re wrong. Griffey was always small and skinny until he got older. McGuire and Sosa were jacked and had muscles where nobody else in the league had. Griffey was pure talent and he rode it his whole career. The only knock against him was that he didn’t really take care of himself after injuries, which cost him more playing time. Griffey hit 630 for his career. He’d easily have 800+ had he not gotten hurt.
JR and Frank Thomas are the only ones I never suspected used anything.
Strange how his approach, his stance and his swing are one of the greatest things to happen to baseball..he is one of the most overall beloved baseball players of all time. Even his opponents watched his swing like everyone else...

I was lucky to meet the legend Jr. at his home in Orlando back in 2001. I was doing some air conditioning work and I talked to him for a little while. Nicest guy you’d ever meet. His swing was the sharpest and most natural swing I’d ever seen. No roids, just pure talent.

I was 12 years old when I saw Griffey play in the Kingdome in '89. It wasn't his debut, but it was his rookie season. The environment was so electric, it surged through you and made the hair on your arms stand up. I will never forget it. We weren't only watching a rising star, it was as if we were witnessing a prodigy...a savior. Like knew this kid was going to save our baseball world from immanent doom. You see, in Seattle, our baseball team hasn't had a lot to cheer about before The Kid came along, or after. I'll take, what is a 20 year playoff drought, Alex. Fast forward to the 1995 ALDS. It all came down to that. Griffey's presence in Seattle. It wasn't just his talent...it was all of HIM. The kid helped save Seattle baseball. We will always love him for that. I still find it amazing how the experience of growing up in Seattle during his time has impacted my life. It was a great time in Seattle and baseball history.
Loved watching him with the mariners growing up. Seeing him was an experience.

My dad bought me a Griffey JR glove when I was 12. That was my fist time playing on a team. I'm 38 now and I still have the glove. I have played on several teams and with my kids. I think that's the only Item I've kept up with from my childhood. Griffey was one of the best. Were both lefties and I wanted to play out field because of him.

I have never been a baseball fan and never will be but I could watch him swing a bat all day! That's poetry in motion!
This man is a Seattle icon and one of the best to play this game. He also did this without cheating and while always being a man of great character. I grew up watching this man exhibit near supernatural abilities in the old Kingdome and I'll always have those awesome memories of The Kid.
The reason why I got into baseball ⚾️ as a kid, this man drew in a generation of millennials into the sport
I remember all of those moments. Some I even saw in Seattle. The greatest player Seattle ever had. I saw him score on Edgars double to beat the Yankees. People were hugging and kissing each other. Fireworks in the Kingdome....I still cry .
Back to back home runs with your dad has to be the most wholesome and greatest moment in baseball ever. Second only would be Kirk Gibson I think.
I’m here in 2022 just to remember how sweet of a swing and great player he was. In my opinion if it wasn’t for the injuries he received, he’d be the all time home run king.
KGJ was an unreal player with unreal skills. One of the most exciting MLB players to ever step on a diamond. The house that Griffey built on the one highlight from Seattle of the fans sign was awesome.
My idol growing up, played center field just like him and had his glove. How many kids will ever get to hit a home run back to back with their fathers.

700 for sure but 800 would be a little bit of a stretch I think. Maybe if he played a couple more seasons.

@@kidcudi908 had he stayed healthy he probably would've played a few more seasons. Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose, and several other played well over 20 seasons so it's possible if a player stays healthy. Jr playing 25 seasons. His season average for homers is 28.6 over 22 seasons to make 630 for his career total. 3 more healthy seasons with that average number would add either 85 or 86 homers to his total. So 715 or 716 with 3 more healthy seasons potentially.

Born in 87. 90s kid. For many it was Jordan, but for me it was this guy. Played the right way and always had fun. Him rounding the bases to beat the Yankees in 95 and then getting mobbed with that smile on his face at the bottom of the pile is the reason we play and watch baseball.
As a lifelong Mariners fan, the greatness of Ken Griffey Jr didn't equate to winning... When we traded him before the 2000 season, our chances of winning increases greatly... Our best franchise season's were 2000 and 2001... Mariners were better without him! I wish the Mariners would win a World Series!
Underrated moment, his put out in game 163 in 2008 with the white Sox. Even late in his career, he had an incredible arm. Sox won the game 1-0 and took the division.

I'm so glad my dad took me to a handful of Mariners home games growing up. To see Griffey hit those homers is such a vivid memory. It's not like the mcwires/Sosa's of the 90s. He wasn't some roided out monster but he would hit bombs like it was effortless.

For a 2020 translation, Griffey Jr was the Steph Curry of baseball. He father was a popular player in the league but never elite. Ken Jr however, just did everything better then everyone else. The better swing, the best fielding, the best attitude, and honestly was just an all around likable guy. And he did it all with class, and humility and grace. The perfect ball player really.

I just coped his sneakers today. “The kid”is my 🐐 of baseball. I remember playing his video game on the snes back in the day. I admire “Junior” because he stuck to this roots and he didn’t need to play for large markets like the Yankees or the Red Sox to be known.
