New Guitar Day! Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Darkback Reissue VOS

  • James and Paul went guitar shopping at GuitarGuitar in Epsom Surrey. During a long fun day trying out a bunch of different guitars, I was expecting to walk away with a shiny new PRS. Whilst there, one of the nice guys who work at GuitarGuitar convinced me to try what he considered one of the best guitars in the shop which was a second-hand Gibson Custom Shop 1957 Les Paul Goldtop Darkback Reissue VOS. Ive never been a fan of Les Pauls as I always find them either neck or body heavy and always a little throaty sounding, but this one was special. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

The Gibson custom shop is building THE best guitars the last few years, from 2018 til today.best I played ,bought in 40 yrs.the wood is lighter, less dense much more resonant plus Gibson nailed the original PAF with the custombucker pickup

    • @yestoES355

I agree but would say that since the mid 90s the custom shop has made exceptional and amazing instruments. Gibson USA has had terrible QC issues, but the custom shop quality was always top tier.

Amazing to think, the originals were never designed & built to sound anything like they do thru 2021 amplification technology. Yet '57 guitar tech sounds absolutely magnificent!

I tried several Friedman Cali guitars in store last year and ended up buying the one I least liked the appearance of online because it just had that certain something!
Spot on Paul! We must support the old fashion method of visiting a guitar store.

I’ve got a ‘59 CS LP that I’ve bought Pre-owned 4 years ago. This is the best LP I’ve ever played (and I did quite a lot in the last decades). It’s light (although solid mahogany), balanced, resonant, the neck plays like a dream and the CustomBuckers’ tone is just awesome. This must be the closest ever made to the original Bursts.
    Enjoy yours !

You definitely got a gem there. I've been in the market for a custom Les Paul but I havnt rushed as for me part of the fun is the hunt and the anticipation. I've learned from you to listen to the guitar unplugged. One thing for sure is if you find a gem like this one, I would think it should hold its value. I have always wanted a Les Paul and since I will likely only get one, I'm willing to spend the extra money on the custom shop. Videos like this only add to the anticipation. I play a very nice strat and I'm happy with it but a strat can't replicate a Gibson Les Paul & visa versa. I can hear the difference in tone between a Standard issue Les Paul and a custom and though many would say it's not enough of a difference to justify the difference in price, I disagree. The customs to my ear sound so much better both on the neck pick up as well as the bridge. Thank you for posting this video and congratulations on your find! Well done!!

I started out on Les Pauls and Les Paul like lol. Many different ones throughout the years. I even had a Jimmy Page Signature from 95', a 1980 Black Beauty Custom, and an early CS R8 I don't remember the year on that one and it was a butterscotch finish. I no longer own any of them, I sold them for personal reasons, I did not want to part with any of them believe me. I now own a GCS R8 in the green lemon fade. This one is the best I've ever played!
It was almost as if I went to Gibson and told them what I wanted from scratch. It has that It factor that nothing compares to. I think the Gibson Custom Shop is really making fine instruments far better than the normal USA line. Yes you do pay a pretty penny for them, but It's my #1. Great video! I think my next purchase will be a Gibson ES-335 but it will have to wait a bit lol. Your Goldtop R7 looks and sounds fantastic.

I got a 57 reissue gold top with the dark back in probably 2002 or 2003. Chunky neck and hotter than normal pickups. When I get home the first thing I am going to do is break it out and do some noodling!

  • @leonisalpha4537

Lp are such a struggle to play. Both back and wrist breaking machines that can sound like this one does. Absolutely glorious. I think trying out gear is a must. Any music gear but guitars especially. Buying without trying can sometimes lead to regreats. And we all know how much that sucks.

I have a 57 Gold Top VOS that is absolutely stunning. However, as you mentioned, I tried several different Paul's before I decided on a particular one. Some of the others were ok and some not so. Point being that without going to a guitar shop a d being able to try various guitars, god knows what I would have ended up with.

Lucky man, you got a really good one. I bet you wont even be using the pedals soon. Agree with all you said about on-line. Part of the fun is going out and looking for your special instrument and being chuffed when you finally get to bring it home and to the band. Guitars are too special to just buy without even touching them.

Very nice. Congrats getting that. Unfortunately the local guitar shops have already all but disappeared where I am, especially if you want to try a few. As a leftie I generally hate shopping in store as the lack of choice just leaves me naffed off. I can’t blame the shops for not stocking more lefties but given the choice it’s not even worth me leaving the house.

I remember A tone wood denier saying that the more resonant the guitar the less sustain. Because of physics. I found that not to be true at all. I also found that a loud unplugged guitar sounds louder when plugged in. So I go for exactly the kinds like yours there. Physics is cool unless you disregard elements, then the whole argument falls apart.

Wonderful video and you touched on all the reasons I love my 57’ reissue. Dark back as well and a 2018. Most lively,/resonant guitar and a joy to play and enjoy its tone.
To touch on the subject of shops, I was fortunate with my Les Paul because I did order it from an online dealer with a great reputation. I always tried to support my local shops (we had 3) but , they closed many years ago now. I’ll give you a guess as to which larger retailer here in the US came to town and forced the smaller guys out of business. Initials GC. Funny thing is, after the big store became the only game in town, the selection became horrible, they sell expensive guitars that have been demoed to a state of “used” as “new” and virtually laugh at the idea of having ANY wiggle room on pricing on their “new/used” inventory. Sorry, not for me.
So, unfortunately for my situation, and I’m sure many others, buying online is usually our only choice. So I personally just make sure it’s a reputable dealer, good return policies and to top it all, they work a little on the pricing for ya. Believe me, if I could shop local I would prefer that but, until a certain “big retailer” loosens its monopoly on music retail, the internet is my choice for now.
LOVE THE VIDEO MY FRIEND! Play her in good health!

It's doing that "Gibson thing", nobody really knows why, but they have a harmonic complexity that is inspiring and a joy.
Love mine, travelled and played the 5 in the uk which were the spec I wanted (leftie) 2 were flawed, 2 were ok one was astonishing. The lightest at 8 lb 6ozs, no idea if that is the key?
If you're spending more than a few hundred quid on a guitar then you can't beat playing the actual one, getting into a music store is one of life's pleasures too.

Yes, I thought the same thing. I’ve never tried or seen a Les Paul that neck dives. Maybe some of the chambered ones from the early 2010’s. Otherwise, with the massive weight of the body, it makes no sense.

    • @davidyelland908
      @davidyelland908 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Love the channel. Goldtop sounds great. However, in my experience, even with Grovers, I have never had any Les Paul neck dive. They are all fine on a strap (except some double cuts).
Sitting down they are typically body heavy, so the neck comes up.
Perhaps a slip of the tongue Paul?
