So I'm not a big country fan, at least not modern country, so I don't really feel qualified to speak on whether or not it truly fits the genre. Maybe it's too hip hop to be country, or maybe that's just what country sounds like in 2019. I dunno, I'm not sure exactly. What I will say is, one of the things that puts me off a lot of modern artists in the genre is that their music, it all sounds like they're embarrassed to be country artists. Like they'd rather be something, anything else. Pop, hip hop, rock, anything to hide their country roots. This on the other hand, despite not coming from a traditional country artist, really seems to use the trappings of the genre very proudly and appreciatively. A lot of the lyrics might be tongue in cheek but the song overall comes across as very genuine.
@@bookmice5323 do you have a link? because i find artists talking about their work interesting most of the time. (and yeah, lyrics/short fic can take a lot of thought because you're working with not that many words/not that much song time to convey what you're trying to get across, so your wording and other stuff have to be chosen with care.)
Is nobody gonna talk about that whole beat was just a nine inch nails song with the drums replaced with trap drums (No hate here, god help me, i can't stop listening to old town road)
For me, anytime you use a drum machine or synthesized drum track and build a rhythm that leans heavily on classic hip-hop, then you’re essentially in the sphere of hip-hop. It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing electric guitar riffs or Latin drums over the top of it - if it’s got that structured, synthesized punchy hip-hop-style beat, then it’s really hip-hop. Because the beat is really the essence of hip-hop. You can sample strings, horns, guitars, anything, and as long as it has that beat, it’s hip-hop. I consider this to be hip-hop/country fusion. But the beat pulls it into orbit around hip-hop. It reminds me of Flo Rida’s “Who’s With Me”, which has heavy delta-blues/country elements to it (but is a much more “commercial” hip-hop track in terms of feel). I like genre mash-ups, and I think they can stand on their own as pieces of music. This song, it’s catchy. I wouldn’t call it great - the lyrics on the verses are a little on the corny side, but it’s a fun song. The remix was definitely an improvement over the original. I think these sorts of genre mash-ups can serve as bridges for people to get exposed to music they wouldn’t normally hear, which is always good, IMO.
Good conversation. This song got stuck in my head for quite awhile after hearing it but I enjoy it so fun not annoying. Just testament to the catchiness of this song👍🏼 I like some of the silly lyrics bc it’s just fun and light and beat grabs hold of you so I think that’s why so many people enjoy it.
I think with Billy Ray on there it could partially qualify as country because he brings a more traditional country vibe to the song. Which is probably why he got on the track, to show support. Otherwise I'd consider a trap song with a country theme.
IMO, it’s definitely just crossing into both genres. They took aspects from trap music and country music and just put it together. If anything it should be on both the hiphop and country charts.
Seen an interview just before this. and everyone is taking and making it their own. Changing the lyrics and keeping the beat. But agree it is not a true country song but a crossover. to bring people together. Love this !!!
George I disagree that the lyrics are trash. Watch the video of Lil Nas X explaining how the song about his own personal path to success. It's deeper than a catchy hook. Whether it's country or not I don't care. I've been a lover of music since I was a child. From KRS-One or EPMD to Pantera, Korn Charlie Daniels Band, Brooks and Dunn. I agree with Ryan that it's art. I feel music to my core and if it speaks to me it's "playlist". Love yalls channel and the vibe y'all bring. Especially when y'all react to a song I've loved for years. Keep it up!!!
I read an article about an interview where Lil Nas said that he wrote the song to be about chasing his dreams and fame. The old town road is the path to fame. He goes from a horse to a tractor as he gets more famous. The part with Billy Ray Cyrus is about achieving that fame, enjoying what comes with it but still thinking back on the earlier, simpler days before getting famous.
I'm an older country fan and I remember in 1992 when Billy Ray came out with Achy Breaky Heart and it was way different than traditional country back then. He created the line dancing craze and changed the game. It's nice to see he is still stretching boundaries. I love this song and I hope Lil Nas X becomes a multi genre performer.
Billy Ray's line have so much more meaning than people realize. Lil Nas X said in the interview that Old Town Road represents the road to success. All his lyrics talk of his humble beginnings in the country and this song signals the start of his journey; "I'm gonna ride until I cant no more." Billy Ray has already traveled that road and his lyrics speak to the material success and where he is now. Notice at the end of his part Billy Ray's line is "I wish I could go back and ride until I cant no more". He is looking back, wishing he could experience that ride one more time and remembering when he was is Lil Nas X's shoes.
We need a definition on country. And it needs to be applied now to the bill board top hundred. Cause although I may agree it’s not Necessarily country It is been singled out on a genre list of a lot of songs that are not country
Country now wouldnt be country 20-30 years ago. To define a genre restricts evolution of that genre and restricts artists creativity. And thats not a musical world i would ever approve of. Personally im an eclectic when it comes to music. I listen to everything. And what i love most is coming accross songs that are different and stray a little out of the box.
@@SecretConceit most people that actually grew up listening to country agree that FGL and Bebe Rexha aren't country and have been trying to say that for years, but no one cared until people who didn't give a shit about country until this song came out turned it into a race issue.

So, I was raised on country music - I mean OLD school country. My dad had an 8 track player in our RV and played straight up, "real" country. He exposed us to the greats like Willy Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, etc. I am grateful to have been exposed to that music and still enjoy the classics to this day. Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain and The Red Headed Stranger are still two of my favorite songs. I love all types of music (metal, R&B, Rap, etc.), but will always have a special place in my heart for country music because of my upbringing, and also because I'm a good ol' Georgia Southern girl! Having said that, I can say unequivocally - I DIG this song!! Looking at this objectively, there have been so many artists who have "crossed over." Taylor Swift for example. Anyone who listens to her music (which it's not really my thing - but to each their own), knows that she has crossed over successfully between Billboard (what I call "bubblegum") music, and country. Back in the day, Shania Twain also crossed over and was accepted not only by country music lovers, but also by folks who listened only to "pop" music. Having stated all of that - and my dad would disown me for saying this - crossing over with this song is no different to me. Knowing how die hard country music lovers are - I think it may be easier for them to accept more pop cross-overs than a song that clearly has R&B or rap influences. There is still a stigma there. I know Nelly collaborated with a country artist before, but was his song played on country stations? This is an interesting conversation and if nothing else, has created a dialogue on the subject. Is it country? Is it not? I think art is art, and again, because other artists have been able to cross over - why not Lil' Nas X? Just my two cents.
As I'm sure you guys know, and a fun fact for those who don't, the banjo came over with the slaves from Africa. As one historian put it: "Originally, the banjo traveled across the ocean on slave ships coming from West Africa in the 1600s and 1700s. The instrument was 'later passed off to curious white folk like me,' Stone says. 'Although a few people play some of the crossover styles that happened early on in the new world, it didn't seem like there was much knowledge of the music that it came from." Also, do check out the INCREDIBLE country/folk/blues (Black) artist, Rhiannon Giddens who gives a bit of a historical lesson during many shows on the banjo and the African (American) contributions to the aforementioned genres. She. Is. Exceptional. And she also happens to play the banjo.
I think this song brings up a much needed discussion about what constitutes country music and what formula (lyrics, instruments, themes, etc) need to change.
I aprreciate how yall keep an open mind to everything the music community needs to be more like this. This is combining country and rap just as nu metal combined rap and metal it has elements of both and can be classified as both who cares if its pure country or not its a good fun song
For me growing up in the South, my siblings and I listened to classic country from my dad, classical from our mom, hip hop from our 'city cousins'...etc. the song may not be serious or a great piece of art...but does it have to be? I dont think so. The lyrics make me smile bc it is the kinda of stuff we bopped to in our pickups at night hanging out. It's a good song to let the windows down to. The people that hate it are the same type of people that told Merle,Cash,Jennings, and Willie that their music wasn't real country. Music will always evolve. Is trap country the greatest thing ever? Nah. But no one should have the right to force their traditional/conservative opinions on other people with power plays. If he wants to sing this type of music let him be and if the consumers say they wanna hear it on the country station, they better damn well play it. Side note- Nashville and the country music industry has been known for being very controlling and limiting in what they allow to be presented. Multiple insiders have referred to it as practically a mafia in how they control things. Tbh I can sadly almost guarantee his race has something to do with it. Darius Rucker being the most well known and pretty much only African American in country is an exception. He plays by the rules, his music sounds like Nashville wants it to sound. Some young black kid from ATL who likes to do what he wants...they probably pegged him as a troublemaker and shut him down, not that it worked 😁
And the official music video is amazing. Just as fun as the song. It’s rare that I’m happy to sit and watch when they’ve got acting before the mucus- but I’ve seen the video a few times through without skipping any part of it at all. It’s just so good.
Hey guys. I love watching your reactions because they are pure and honest. As far as the topic of where this song falls genre wise is a open hole. If you go onto Pandora and type in Hick Hop it will play this exact style of music. Country Rap..... some songs are not so great but that's what the skip button is for right... But you have groups like the Jawga boys and The Lacs who have made a fortune with this style of music. They will embrace this song I guarantee.... Keep the videos coming and keep the pure and open minded comments flowing....

So my understanding is that the reason it was on the country charts in the first place is because the country fans requested it and the country DJ's ended up ripping it off TH-cam since they didn't have it. So it earned its spot the way it's supposed to be earned through requests and plays.

(and yeah, lyrics/short fic can take a lot of thought because you're working with not that many words/not that much song time to convey what you're trying to get across, so your wording and other stuff have to be chosen with care.)
I am a 63 year old grandma and i love this song. Been dancing with the grandkids love love
I loved Nelly with Tim McGraw!
That's the beautiful thing about music of any genre. It brings people together.
Is nobody gonna talk about that whole beat was just a nine inch nails song with the drums replaced with trap drums
(No hate here, god help me, i can't stop listening to old town road)
No reactors ever talk about it. Unfortunate for Trent.
Billy got Barrrzzz man.
He need to make a full Country Trap record now.
A good hook is a good hook! Loved this fun collaboration between Lil Nas X and Miley's daddy.
This song is going on my barrel racing playlist. I really like it and it's fun. I like listening to songs like this before my run.
I think with Billy Ray on there it could partially qualify as country because he brings a more traditional country vibe to the song. Which is probably why he got on the track, to show support. Otherwise I'd consider a trap song with a country theme.
I love you guys. Y'all are so positive and your sweetness blows my mind!
You guys should do a podcast like y’all have the setup looking good
I'm an older country fan and I remember in 1992 when Billy Ray came out with Achy Breaky Heart and it was way different than traditional country back then. He created the line dancing craze and changed the game. It's nice to see he is still stretching boundaries. I love this song and I hope Lil Nas X becomes a multi genre performer.
The guitar in the song is sampled from Nine Inch Nails 34 ghosts
Billy Ray's line have so much more meaning than people realize. Lil Nas X said in the interview that Old Town Road represents the road to success. All his lyrics talk of his humble beginnings in the country and this song signals the start of his journey; "I'm gonna ride until I cant no more." Billy Ray has already traveled that road and his lyrics speak to the material success and where he is now. Notice at the end of his part Billy Ray's line is "I wish I could go back and ride until I cant no more". He is looking back, wishing he could experience that ride one more time and remembering when he was is Lil Nas X's shoes.
Interesting that whoever produced the song sampled Nine Inch Nails' song 34 Ghost IV.
You two are awesome!
So glad that I found your channel!!
We need a definition on country. And it needs to be applied now to the bill board top hundred. Cause although I may agree it’s not Necessarily country
It is been singled out on a genre list of a lot of songs that are not country
Country now wouldnt be country 20-30 years ago. To define a genre restricts evolution of that genre and restricts artists creativity.
And thats not a musical world i would ever approve of.
Personally im an eclectic when it comes to music. I listen to everything. And what i love most is coming accross songs that are different and stray a little out of the box.
Nicholas Castillo And that’s the issue. Why is this song not country but Florida Georgia and Bebe Rexha is?
@@SecretConceit most people that actually grew up listening to country agree that FGL and Bebe Rexha aren't country and have been trying to say that for years, but no one cared until people who didn't give a shit about country until this song came out turned it into a race issue.
The best reaction channel on YT! Greetings from Macedonia 🇲🇰 you guys rock!
nobody seems to mention that the beat comes from the song ghost 34 from nine inch nails. i dont enjoy hip hop but that beat drew me in just because im a fan of nine inch nails.
As a country fan this is not country. But i really like the song it is catchy. It's pretty easy to distinguish the difference.
The embrace of just how straight up funny this song is makes it so much better. Imagine the booth when they did this must have been a blast.
I loved the red dead redemption video, but adding Billy Ray, fire🔥🔥
As I'm sure you guys know, and a fun fact for those who don't, the banjo came over with the slaves from Africa.
As one historian put it: "Originally, the banjo traveled across the ocean on slave ships coming from West Africa in the 1600s and 1700s. The instrument was 'later passed off to curious white folk like me,' Stone says. 'Although a few people play some of the crossover styles that happened early on in the new world, it didn't seem like there was much knowledge of the music that it came from."
Also, do check out the INCREDIBLE country/folk/blues (Black) artist, Rhiannon Giddens who gives a bit of a historical lesson during many shows on the banjo and the African (American) contributions to the aforementioned genres. She. Is. Exceptional. And she also happens to play the banjo.
Crazy how they used a Nine inch nails sample too....🤘
yup!! Ghosts 34
I think this song brings up a much needed discussion about what constitutes country music and what formula (lyrics, instruments, themes, etc) need to change.
10 bucks this review blows up lol i say 1 mil views
Some young black kid from ATL who likes to do what he wants...they probably pegged him as a troublemaker and shut him down, not that it worked 😁
man i dont what it is about this song but its just awesome
Your definition of rap and/or hip hop is any song. Rhyming over a beat.
Amen
And the official music video is amazing. Just as fun as the song. It’s rare that I’m happy to sit and watch when they’ve got acting before the mucus- but I’ve seen the video a few times through without skipping any part of it at all. It’s just so good.
You know this was so clever to have a second video to your reactions smart smart guys
You guys earned a new sub!
(yes with the bell)
You guys are the best.
This song in the club is off the chain!

Exactly!!!
Ayyyyy, I forgot about that song! I'm listening to now :o)
Right...you can add Crucial Conflict to the list.
OG
Fun to watch y’all’s reaction! 🤠
I have to disagree when he says the lyrics are trash, because if that was true you wouldn’t like the song 🤷🏽♀️ you would just like the beat
its not bad lyrics, just a plain simple one, but people called eminem revival album trash, now imagine a song plain and simple like that, though billy ray was fire singing
True LIV fans need to be viewing part 2 of all reaction videos. Let’s get these guys an equal amount of views for each part. These guys are trying to make a living, give them the support. Don’t just watch part one and be done. Do the right thing little yos.
this is countrap i dont care what anyone says
This is crap i don't care what anyone says
Its beautiful
@@Nico-dp8kv You are muy funny, compadre!
Urban Dictionary says: “Get a G-haw hat for your brother Manafort.” Priceless bridge for us all.
Mix it with Ginuwine's Pony and you have song of the year 😄
So my understanding is that the reason it was on the country charts in the first place is because the country fans requested it and the country DJ's ended up ripping it off TH-cam since they didn't have it. So it earned its spot the way it's supposed to be earned through requests and plays.
Dang we didn't get to the lyrics 😭
The video combined with the tune, is just FUNNY!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
Hey, love yalls reaction videos! Yall need to do a reaction video to Tyler Childers, Feathered Indians. Think yall would love it!
Keep doin work fellas. These videos are amazing.
Yes! I think you guys would love him.
This is the official birth of the new genre.
Hip-Haw
you're wrong, dude. The lyrics are great on this tune. They fit perfectly.
The lyrics make it country to me.
@@startingQB In which case you know nothing about country music, or the experiences of real country people. it's really sad to hear people say that the lyrics of "Old town road" is what makes it country when the song is a false, and inaccurate representation of country people.
@@MfckingDye don't know you're experience, but his lyrics are about his experience.
@@startingQB He doesn't have any experiences of living as a country boy at all. When making this song, all he did was pull out every stereotypical thing he could get out of his ass.
@Pedro Alter Well I have to disagree. I think the song is just pure shit. The song is a mockery of many people, and it is simply not a country song. It is an inaccurate example of country people, and country music.
This song is catchy AF great tune I just like it. Props for you guys calling it for what it is. I don't care if it is country or not music is about you what you like. Probably almost country not quite but cannot deny that the song is FUN!
