Rüstem Pasha Mosque

How about we take a small tour together today at the Rüstem Pasha Mosque, which I personally visited and admired? This mosque was built between 1555-1561 by Mihrimah Sultan, the wife of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman's son-in-law and grand vizier. It is no surprise that the architect of this magnificent mosque is Mimar Sinan. We are not talking about a rectangular-centered classic Ottoman mosque, but rather a building that stands out among Mimar Sinan's most magnificent and large works. The mosque, whose silhouette is often seen in Istanbul drawings, is a kind of symbol in the city. When it comes to the interior design, it is appropriate to say that we cannot find another structure in Istanbul where we can see such special and rare tiles together. This place was already known as the most magnificent and ornate mosque of the Ottoman Empire when it was built. In fact, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque was chosen as the most beautiful historic mosque in Europe in a magazine published in 2007. However, unfortunately, many tile works in this part of the mosque, which is the most accessible place for the last congregation, have been stolen.
Bugün kendimin de bizzat ziyaret edip hayran kaldığı Rüstem Paşa Camii’nde hep birlikte ufak bir gezintiye çıkalım. Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın damadı ve sadrazamı için eşi Mihrimah Sultan tarafından 1555-1561 yılları arasında inşa edilmiş bu cami. Bu gösterişli caminin mimarının Mimar Sinan olduğu bilgisi de zaten şaşırtmayacaktır. Planı dikdörtgen merkezli klasik bir Osmanlı camii olmaktan ziyade, Mimar Sinan’ın en ihtişamlı ve büyük eserleri arasında da boy göstermiş bir yapıdan söz ediyoruz. İstanbul çizimlerinde de sık sık silüetine rast geldiğimiz cami şehirde bir nevi sembol gibi. İç tasarıma gelecek olursak, İstanbul’da bu denli özel ve nadide çiniyi bir arada görebileceğimiz başka bir yapı bulamayız desek yeridir. Zaten inşa edildiği dönemde de Osmanlı’nın en şatafatlı ve süslü camisi olarak nam salmış burası. Hatta 2007 yılında yayınlanan bir dergide Avrupa’nın en güzel tarihi camii seçilmiş Rüstem Paşa Camii. Hal böyleyken, son cemaat yeri en ulaşılabilir yer olduğundan bu kısımda bulunan birçok çini işlemesi ne yazık ki çalınmış.
