I think your manual was missing a page. It explains that the SAME LINK from the original Legend of Zelda game helped rebuild Hyrule after the events of the first game, and that "several seasons passed" between the first game and the second. Then, as he approached his 16th birthday, the mark appeared on the back of his hand. These games are a few years apart at most, not several generations apart. Also, the manual makes it clear the legend of AOL Zelda occurred long, long, long ago, not within one person's lifetime, and that Impa's family was tasked with preserving the legend so that the hero could be given the scroll and crystals. EDIT: I just read the manual again, and there are several lines that state this legend occurred a really long time ago. Impa's family was tasked with passing down the legend for generations, and the script in which the scroll is written is ancient and no one can read it anymore; Link had never even seen the letters used before. This happened a REALLY long time ago, waaaaaaay in the past.
hey great video !! very excited to see more and more new channels making stuff they’re passionate about !! by complete coincidence i’m actually right in the middle of making a video about zelda 2 so it was very fun to see where our thought processes happened to overlap teehee looking forward to seeing more from you !! also i very much appreciate the shoutout, that was so kind : )
One thing I've thought for a while was that all the swords in Zelda1 were the same sword. What was once a great blade withered and was reduced to "wood". After Link "masters using it", it is upgraded by the old man to the White Sword, and again into the Magical Sword when it regains full power. The idea isn't really based on anything, but I think it's neat. Really helps connect things if you stretch your imagination and say that it is the Master Sword reborn. Great series, looking forward to seeing where it goes!
Thank you! And ya, I always read it the same way with the same sword upgrading, but like you said, the game manual and other things don't really indicate one way or the other that I could find
When u get to a point in the overworld that has a space tgat beings u ti a battle scene you need to hit one if the three monsters at the same rime u hit the space to take u to the battle and youll skip it
I did do that on a few occasions by accident, but I didn't think it was worth bringing up in the video since it's clearly just a Hardware limitation/technical glitch... that said super useful if you can time it well!
I was one of those kids in the 80s that played the original (US version) of LoZ and when AOL came out it did blow my mind that there was another Triforce that went with the first two. It led to speculation of how many Triforce there actually were.
Things to consider for later games: The ‘trophy’ is almost certainly related to Skyward sword the Goddess Statue in that game. The Fairy Magic Link learns from the sage in this game is most likely related to the way the descendants of the sages transform into fairy-like winged balls of light in Four Swords Adventure. The Down Thrust and Sword Beam appear in other games as techniques that can be learned by various characters, some with connections to Knights. Hyrule is the land that includes the entire map in AOL, and may contain more area off the map. This entire area was apparently part of the Kingdom of Hyrule when the old king was ruling with the entire Triforce. The Little Kingdom in the land of Hyrule is mentioned in the first game manual and this is where Zelda was living and where Gan(n)on invaded. This is probably what’s left of the original kingdom after the King died and the Prince wasn’t able to rule as wisely. It’s unknown if Ganon had caused the kingdom to fall apart or if other kingdons were formed from the larger United Kingdom of Hyrule. Other games like the Oracles series have other lands or kingdoms that may have been a part of that United Kingdom in the past, and possibly bare a resemblance to certain areas in the AOL map:
I'm still towards the beginning of the video and I'm sure you already know this, but if you've haven't played the pc enhanced edition yet it's awesome. All changes are in the right places. I've beat the game 3 times on the original NES as a kid so I'm well aware everyone should struggle in this game, but this edition has only changes which are helpful.
2. As I have pointed in a previous video, not everything about Zelda was all set and stone at the point of Zelda 2. The lore, the world-building, Super Mario was in a similar position at the time. However, the idea of a Zelda chronology wouldn’t cross people’s minds until Miyamoto and his associate came up with the idea at a point in time when Ocarina of Time was already released. And it’s always been the case that Zelda 2 was at the end of the timeline… at least the timeline it was in.
There were timeline theories before OoT. Some folks put the first 4 games on all sorts of odd orders back then, although none of it seemed all that serious
Game rumors and urban legends were well established at this time, but game theorizing really didn't exist yet. Partly because we didn't have enough lore to work with, and partly because there was no venue through which to share ideas. I don't remember anyone saying, "Shouldn't there be three of them if it's the TRIforce?" Nope, the Zelda 1 manual clearly said there were two, and the "tri" just seemed to be there because they were triangular in shape.
Ya, "Theorizing" is definitely the modern term for it thanks to MatPat. I should have explained it better but according to some interviews I've seen, it almost looks like at least some of the Nintendo devs meant to imply they were working on a sequel with the third, secret triforce. But it's all just for fun
Another Excellent Video! I do think that the gap between the AoL backstory and the events of the game is probably much longer though due to the scroll Impa gives Link. Not only does she say it’s been handed down for generations within Impa’s family, but it was also written so long ago that it’s unintelligible to people in the modern era. PS- Thanks for the shoutout at the end! It really means a lot to me.
In a lot of ways, the internet back then was less an infant and more of a baby inside its mother's womb. Colleges and only a few dedicated nerds (like myself if I had been old enough to know what the internet was then) would have had it.
I always assumed that the events of Sleeping Zelda at least happened a century prior to the events of of Zelda 1 and Zelda II. The manual in its entirety implies the story of Sleeping Zelda was passed down several generations so 100 may be lowballing it. The premise of NES Hyrule was that it slowly declined after the kings death and the tragedy of Sleeping Zelda so the manual's description checks out. Also the Link in Zelda II is the same exact Link from Zelda 1 grown up. He was 10 in the first game and after defeating Ganon, he helped rebuild Hyrule until the mark of the triforce showed up on his hand setting up the story of Zelda II.
4:10 yes, it completely blew our minds, that there were 3 triforces. At the time there were only 2, in the game and in the TV show. Triforce didn't seem to imply 3 forces, it was more understood that they were just triangles with force. They actually did reference the triforce of courage on a special episode of Captain N which was a crossover with the Zelda cartoon on the super mario bros super show, but it was a blink and you miss it kind of thing...
I'll have to check out Captain N sometime. I want to make an episode on the Zelda show too sometime, but I forgot there's only the two triforces in that show as well
Link usually has some place of origin in the series, this one doesn’t though. Many Links have a hometown or family of some sort, this one doesn’t even have a house or a cave to his name. He just… came from nowhere. In my opinion, this one may have lived in Kasuto before it went to crap and monsters invaded, maybe he survived the invasion in some manner by getting stuck at sea, the town is quite close to it after all, and if that’s the case, he could have been washed up near lesser hyrule’s south shore or somewhere nearby and eventually came across Impa sometime later. This is just a headcanon, but it would make sense to me considering the collapse of old Kasuto seems to have happened in recent years. Perhaps near the time Ganon was resurrected once again, some of his minions crossed the seas and took over the Village, hoping to take the eastern continent during the chaos, but didn’t make much progress, maybe the combined efforts of what’s left of the Hylian Army prevented them from making any more leeway.
Miyamoto has stated Link is 12 in LoZ and I believe it is stated (might just be in the Japanese) that he has just turned 16 in AoL, so pretty close on the ages. Great watch, I have been watching another channel, GanonFan, who just started the same process, and noticed the evil wizard being the prince's shadow when rereading the manuals. I hadn't put that together with the old man in the final dungeon, so seeing you come to a similar theory with more details is cool. I look forward to following this series good luck.
Honestly, I wish Nintendo would somehow go back to this part of the timeline and flesh it out more. Fit it in better with the lore that later games would give us and answer some of the questions we are still left with today.
I'd love an official remake, but I think the fan-made remakes are going to have to do for now. Maybe once I finish the series, I'll come back and play some of those.
woah, i just watched all of your zelda videos, i thought you where a long time youtuber, just because of your quality!!! i've subbed, keep up the great work!!!!!

1. To be honest, since I have no history with the NES Zeldas, I will give credit that Nintendo at that time wanted to make Zelda a numbered series. When they had so many ideas for newer entries, it probably was necessary to stop the numbering and just make fresh original takes on the legends. But then just as the series was beginning to move forward, it chronologically goes several steps back with occasional steps up from that point on. Given how Zelda 2 turned out, they never really had plans to make a follow up for it.

So a few points. First, Ganon being revived specifically by Links blood is an interesting point. Note that he isn't the boss of the game and that he doesn't actually play any major role in its events. Link just happens to have the blood that can revive him. We are probably meant to suspect that that is because Link is the same Link that killed Ganon originally, though that would beg questions about if the Tri Force in old Hyrule is a *different* Tri Force. If he's the same Link, then is the Tri Force in the first game incomplete? I like your speculation on the shadow spell being what caused the tragedy. It sounds plausible given the evidence. I feel as though perhaps Hyrule needs a better way to test for worthiness after that particular misstep. I also think it would have been hilarious if the heros shadow killed him, proving him to have a worthy heart but also preventing him from saving the day... Not exactly the wisest testing mechanism.
The good news is that Link from Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 is the same incarnation. They didn't really have a reincarnation plotline ironed out at this point. That Link only has to get one piece, but has all 3 at the end is plenty of proof as well since he got both in Zelda 1. (Wisdom from dungeons and Power from Ganon)
@@heartnahalf I agree with your conclusions. It's been so long since I played the first game that I never really realized that the Tri Force wasn't complete in the first game. How odd. Almost as though they planned a follow up game all along?
