Natural Clay Paint, homemade with soil and wheatpaste: A cinematic venture

  • This homemade clay paint is a great alternative to acrylic or latex paints. It is suitable for existing walls in conventional houses or over plaster in natural homes. This is a perfect for non-toxic paint, in fact everything in this recipe is edible! All the ingredients in this film can be food-grade and naturally sourced, making it a sustainable, healthy option for families.
The paint technique shown in the film is water soluble when it dries. This makes it unsuitable for wet conditions, unless sealed with linseed oil or another masonry sealer OR if an additive was included instead of the wheat paste, such as Caesin glue, acrylic, or soy resin.
This technique can be used on an existing acrylic wall. If using it on bare drywall, we recommend a conventional primer first.
In this film we collected soil as an example of the diversity of colors in the earth, but you can easily purchase white and/or grey clay and add pigments to achieve any color.
    Ingredients:
    Clay -
You either use bagged clay (which is a purer form of clay) from local ceramic suppliers or some hardware stores OR you can harvest your own soil as we did in this film.
Most soils have some clay content in it, but you will have to process it as we show in the video. We soaked our soil in water to screen it wet, however soil can still be screened dry. We used a windowscreen but you can use smaller mesh if you want your paint finer. If you sift your clay wet, you need to get rid of the excess moisture to make a clay putty. Here we achieved this by hanging it in cloth for a few days, allowing any excess water to drain. This resulted in a clay putty, which has a toothpaste-like consistency.
    Wheat-Paste Concentrate -
This is your common glue to use paper mache and other craft projects. You need to use white flour as wholewheat is not sticky enough.
The recipe for the wheat-paste concentrate is:
    1 cup Flour
Mixed with 2 cups cold water
Add mix to 1½ cups of boiling water
    Cook until thick and translucent
    Mica Powder -
We added Mica Powder as a paint thickener. You can use a very fine sand and marble powder but these can be very heavy. You might have luck with calcium carbonate or limestone powder if you can’t find Mica powder.
You can purchase Mica powder here: nmclay.com/mica-200-mica-200c...
    Pigment -
We did not use pigment in the video, I used a small amount of green pigment in one of my colors, otherwise all the colors were natural.
You can use any pigments from your hardware store that are dyes for cements, or from your ceramic stores. You can also get tints from paint counters at hardware stores. There are also a million places online.
    Paint Recipe (using Clay Putty):
    1-part Wheatpaste Concentrate
    1-parts Water
    1-part Clay Putty
    1-part Mica powder
Mix all together and adjust to desired consistency.
    Paint Recipe (using Dry Clay)
    1-part Wheatpaste Concentrate
    2-parts water
    1-part clay
    1-part Mica powder
Mix all together and adjust to desired consistency.
If you are not planning to use within 24 hours, store in the fridge, as the flour will begin to ferment.
Apply with a brush, roller or even spray.

I'm literally just an artist who thinks it's cool to use what's readily available to make your own natural pigments. So, this was pretty cool from an artistic standpoint, too. Also, the cinematography was nice!

It's hard to find words for the appreciation I have for this. The content is flawless, open source, and a breath of fresh air in its simplicity and utility. The aesthetics - my gosh. Every one of these tops the previous one, and that is no easy feat. These offerings just seep with care and respect - for the work - the craft, for nature, for the tradition embodied in your family, and the audience who are transported to a slightly altered timeline where joy, beauty, and spirit drive the making of things. Beautiful beyond words, and an honor to have the connections I do to that land and your generous spirits. Gracias amigos.

@serendipidus1 You may have what we call wild clay!
Remove stones & hard chunks, wet and make two small spheres. Find a local potter who will contract fire for a couple of bucks and ask for both to be fired (on a tile) at the bisque temp. Then have one fired at the hotter glaze temperature. You will be able to see if it is clay (if it held together and became a solid) and which of the two temperatures it is best at. Often the second firing is too hot and the clay will be darker and more melted/shiny.
Usually the first firing is hot enough. We use it for painting decorations on commercially prepared clay.

I started making journals about 10 or so years ago, and I've known about wheat paste since then but I was "afraid" to try it............until about 2 weeks ago. I wanted to make a journal, but since the art stores have been closed (UGH!!), I couldn't buy any PVA glue locally so I decided to make wheat paste instead. Oh. My...........GOODNESS!!
This is just one thing that has been a blessing so far from all the "craziness' going on right now, and that is my "discovery" of wheat paste!! I am, ABSOLUTELY in LOVE with the "stuff"!! My journal turned out fantastic (I'm NOT going back to PVA (!)) and you guys did an AMAZING job with putting my now.......TWO favorite things together; earth and wheat paste!! So, THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO!!
One question: What is the sand like texture in the paint? I'm assuming it's what made it through the screen (?).

We've got some stunning blue-green soil around the old copper mines where I live. Great for making watercolor.

I had not considered this, I have an old copper mine within driving distance. The area is also covered with hazel trees so I now have two reasons to visit later in the year. Thank you!
