@@ismolappalainen6774 that was my thought too. I remember him saying the tanks had some kind of food grade syrup in them and based on Toby's reaction, he didn't like the smell. I'm sure you know this, but just a friendly reminder that if your silkie is frosty coming out in the morning, they need better ventilation in the coop.
I got my own Livestock Guardian puppy yesterday. She's only 3 months old but she was raised on a farm and I know she'll make a great LGD when she grows up! Thanks for showing me how wonderful and valuable a LGD is!
Oh my goodness - a bear or something could have been stalking you and Toby barking at it! EEEEK! But what a relief. Love tracks in the snow - nice book Allison! Great present! Snow helped to see that the fox tracks avoided the electric fence by quite a few yards - even though the snow stopped it from working! Methinks they had a test and got zapped before the snow came! Good boy Toby, good boy.
Toby might not be able to hear anything when he's in that plastic container. If it's making a lot of noise when he moves he might not be certain of his charges. Super easy cold weather dog house is three hay bales in a U shape with a piece of plywood set up as a back angled roof. Just putting a couple hay bales under the duck house to give him a wind block could be enough. I used to live in the Rockies and I saw more hay bail dog houses in the winter than anything else. The best ones have bail floors, walls, and ceiling and a tarp covering (Then you can take it apart in the summer, but they can be very cool in the heat too)
It looks like the roosters are friendly and fitting in on the farm! I'm glad Toby has started using his cube to take shelter in. He probably would prefer something less claustrophobic since he is a LGD and mostlikely prefers wider open spaces but when it gets that cold what is a dog to do but give in and climb in the cube and make his owner happy! If that was Pablo's tracks on the outside of the fence that is pretty awesome! Dog patrol on the inside and cat patrol on the outside of fence perimeters! Now that's team work!
Maybe Toby doesn't use the house because he won't have a 360 degrees view on what is going on as he is a guard dog. When he is laying under the duck house he does have that so that would be my wild guess.
Dude, I love your videos! They are so informing, I love watching your journey in farming, and adventures on the farm. Also, your cutaways crack me up! 😂
They could put a mat made for horse stalls under there. Then throw some hay on that. It would be easier to pull out the old bay & would insure he has a comfy bed that's not directly on the ground.
Linda C they sure did! Along with lions, badgers, seals and other animals! And it certainly wasn't meant to be an insult so really no need to circle back to a compliment, lol
Linda C fair enough! I'm going to stick with Chewbacca though! And as a huge Star Wars fan, it's the highest compliment to say someone sounded like Chewie, lol 😇
When you sneak up on Toby make sure you are down wind from him my Maremmano named Ipo has a incredible sense of smell and hearing as well she can hear brush break a quarter mile out .Toby knows your smell and knows the sound of your walk so put different shoes on that you don't use all the time and maybe put a small stone in one to change your gate . Maybe get down on all fours when close but not near to the fence too and something stinky to cover your sent (you can buy lion or wolf sent on the internet) you will hear a much different bark and more aggressiveness like never before from such a kind dog . We have lions come by and when Ipo smells them her alert is really something to be seen and heard , much different . Very important to is not to approach him when he alerts on you ..... give him his victory of chasing you away not knowing it is you . Set up some of your trail cams to record his response to chasing off something big and unknown .You may need to practice your bear sounds it is more of a eerruuu with ogh ogh ... Lol
I love your vidoes, they're so relaxing. Last year I started volunteering at a local waterfowl rescue so I'm starting to become obsessed with ducks and geese. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your farm life with all of us ^_^
Having a trail cam out along the perimeter would be fun. See all the animal activities. Have you thought of taking Toby on a walk through the woods at night? Thanks for all the great content!
I’m wondering if he doesn’t like his shelter because of the sound interference. With two layers of sides (the plastic and wood) it might effect him being able to hear if something comes up on the farm. Just my thought :)
was thinking that too! At first I thought maybe it's still a size issue toby just being a big dog liking really big space but after this video with him finally using it he's not 100% against it but I can totally see the plastic interfering with the sound a fair amount and with him relying on his senses to protect the livestock at night that could be an issue
maybe since toby likes to be under the duck house, he would also like to stay there at night as well? or maybe that was just a summer thing. i honestly don’t know. the first thing that came to mind, though, was to doing positive association with new beds/places of rest with treats, toys, and other stuff he likes either way, he’s a very good boy and anything he does is is amazing. toby: *exists* brain: *releases serotonin* (:
When I was growing up I worked on a ranch and we had a handful of livestock Guardian dogs. None of them had any sort of housing they had a covered area next to the hay barn and that's where they slept. When I asked the old Timer why they didn't have any type of dog house he said they refuse to use it because it blocks the sounds and the smells. Essentially making them blind to any Intruders or predators in the area. Toby may be feeling something similar.
Morgan....I am a math teacher. Students frequently mix up area and perimeter. I could show them parts of this video to help them understand perimeter! Thank you. :)
the best part about these videos is i get to see your daily routine.. very peaceful to me. also i just love how the roosters don't crow until they're released 😂
I just found your channel and have been binge watching. My husband and I have lived on our small farm for 21 years now. Let me tell you we learned a lot from our mistakes. This does not have anything to do with this video, but on another one you mentioned growing black locust trees. Then in another you mentioned raising some cattle. I don't know but I thought black locust was toxic if eaten by any animal. I know I barely stuck myself with a thorn and it was really sore for several days. It also took a long time to heal for such a small spot. Any way I love watching you videos. One other thing. When we fenced our property we added two drive in gates and one walk in gate. For us this was one of the best things we ever did.
Good to see you have a proper tester so you don’t have to use your head anymore. Lol. Sorry for the joke. That really had to hurt. Looks like Toby like to be closer to those he is protecting. He sure is on the ball as soon as there is any sounds out there at night. What a good boy!
Galliger, before the days of Premire, had a light I'd put at the far end if the perimeter fence. If the light was flashing the fence was hot. The blinking light worked best at night.
Maybe someone already mentioned. You can use those old Haybale’s to make garden rows. without the weeding or D grassing your garden space. It’s a very efficient way of making great gardening area with very little effort if you could roll them out.with success. Best of luck.
Aw, what a cute gift. I'm sure you'll be an expert at animal tracks in no time, Morgan. That was so thoughtful. And, p.s. I think Toby knew you were except for the first second or so, don't forget, aside from excellent hearing, he also has an amazing sense of smell. Cute vid idea though. And, some people on here suggested turning Toby's house so that the opening faces outward to the field might make him more inclined to use it (glad to see he did today), because clearly his job is his first priority :) Thanks for taking us along your perimeter :)
Toby definitely needs more protection from the cold. Kennel idea: Get rid of the plastic. Plastic has no insulation. Put more boards around front and sides, then a flap to keep out the wind. Lots of straw! Plan 2: dig out a place under the Quack House to get Toby out of the wind. Maybe boards on 2 sides of a corner to block the wind. Again, lots of straw! Love to Toby!
Pablo knew you were up to something. LOL Guard dog, how about guard cat is early warning system? LOL Glad you found the problem with the fence. Lovely wing prints there near that blood. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Neat trick with a transistor radio. Will hear audible clicks while walking the fencelines with a portable radio tuned off the station and on high volume. I's a quick and easy way to locate any electrical leakage. Feed Toby in the Dog House to get him to feel it's his house.
The best part about the snow is being able to see all those tracks! I know in the past you have mentioned trail cams... have you considered putting one on your fence in the back area just to see what walks by? I have one in my yard and I admit, I was amazed by the wildlife I have at night in a suburban yard !! Raccoons, possum, skunk, fox, coyotes, cats, a couple dogs, and deer. Great fun to watch.
I have a Maremma/Great Pyrenees cross as my LGD. I have 2 strands of fence at 15 & 36 inches that are hot. If the cattle decide to stroll, she puts them back. Paid to have 5 strands put up on my first 20 acre pasture. Pulled 3 wires to fence another 90 acres at 15 & 36. I’m a cow/calf operation with pigs & poultry on the side.
Hello Gold Shaw Farm, if i were u i would get a secondary dog, a working line german shepherd, they are extremely easy to train and they never back down from a fight. I had a Cane Corso for the last couple of years guarding my little farm and i wont lie, he's still a beast. The problem was that he wasnt fast and athletic enough, basically he's a tank and coyotes used to pick fights with him. I trained him to never leave the farm because obviously he's gonna get killed by 20-30 coyotes out there waiting for him. Anyway, i named my shepherd Wik, i bought it from Italy and i love him, he's now 2 years old and since his arrival NOT EVEN ONE chicken went missing. last year i've found remains of coyotes and foxes inside my land, i dont know if they started consuming them but i dont mind as long as they do their job. We also get extreme temperatures, like -30degrees Celsius and i built them a mini home but they would rather sleep in the snow for some reason. Anyway, good luck on your farm, i watched like every video of yours and i really like the progress you've made so far!
Toby looks such a sweet dog.... Those eyes are so beautiful. I really do love your dog! New to your channel but I have subbed and will be getting my daily fix of Toby dog and Pablo too! 😁
1. Morgan: "I was pretty impressed with Toby's response." Viewer: I was pretty impressed with Morgan's bear call. Toby: "My human is a weirdo" (not really). LOL! 2. At least you will have a place to sleep when you need to spend time in the "dog house"! 3. The frost on Penney might indicate that there is too much humidity in the coop. You might want to check on the coop's ventilation.
I just love watching Toby go into action. I talk out loud saying " GOOD BOY TOBY" he does a nice job scarring away predictors until he smells it's a Morgan.
my theory on why toby dog docent use his dog hut is because he doesn't have a clear view over the pasture, from where most threats come from. either for sight or sound, he'd rather have a clear view.
Happy New Year Friend! You need a mountable wildlife camera to catch what's going on at night. Do you have any large wildlife that would be a threat to Toby, black bear, etc? I love the drone areial photos. They just give me such a peaceful feeling in my soul, old barns, serenity, etc. Changing seasons, maybe a 4 Season framed montage would work. BTW, you have some of the best camera and sound equipment of anyone. Love the squeaky sound of your boots in the snow and even the patter of the goose's feet on their house ramp. Thanks for everything!

There’s some ground to your “wild guess” I have to say
and 360° sound
True. Maybe Morgan should just give up and make him a bed under the duck house.
The echo of noise probably affects his hearing too. As Thomas said.
Also.. That plastic house echoes too much and is kinda noisy itself.
When Toby barked in response to the bear noises I literally said GOOD DOG! Out loud 😆
Toby must've thought you killed the bear
Dude, I love your videos! They are so informing, I love watching your journey in farming, and adventures on the farm. Also, your cutaways crack me up! 😂
Maybe Tobby likes being able to see all around him which you can't in the container. I say throw more hay under the bldg he prefers.
yes too enclosed
He wants a watchtower
They could put a mat made for horse stalls under there. Then throw some hay on that. It would be easier to pull out the old bay & would insure he has a comfy bed that's not directly on the ground.
That is what I thought he was missing his side vision. He is fine.
I love ‘Toby the land cloud’! He is the best cloud!
try this with someone he doesn't know because I wouldnt be surprised if he smelled you waaaay before he saw you.
I love how you film this in a way so it feels I'm there.
Love from the netherlands ❤️🙏
The night vison gives him googly eyes.
also i think the blood was Pablo doing his job
The farm's mouse count dropped by one.
Enjoyed seeing the animals in their houses at night and the parameter walk of the farm.
Sounded a bit more like Chewbacca was sneaking up, not a bear, lol
Well, considering that they used bear noises for Chewbacca, you've circled back to a compliment 🙂
Linda C they sure did! Along with lions, badgers, seals and other animals! And it certainly wasn't meant to be an insult so really no need to circle back to a compliment, lol
@@ronnybingham9007 oh, no, not that it was an insult.. but in the end, he kind of did sound like a bear!
Linda C fair enough!
I'm going to stick with Chewbacca though! And as a huge Star Wars fan, it's the highest compliment to say someone sounded like Chewie, lol 😇
@@ronnybingham9007 that's understood! 😉
I can’t wait for you to get another dog and barn cats!! Your videos really add joy to my life. Keep up the great work!!
Lol
yes
amazing idea
I love your vidoes, they're so relaxing. Last year I started volunteering at a local waterfowl rescue so I'm starting to become obsessed with ducks and geese. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your farm life with all of us ^_^
Having a trail cam out along the perimeter would be fun. See all the animal activities.
Have you thought of taking Toby on a walk through the woods at night?
Thanks for all the great content!
This was a good one Morgan! Fun and interesting to watch. It made me laugh when all the chickens were way up roosting. Super cute!
I’m wondering if he doesn’t like his shelter because of the sound interference. With two layers of sides (the plastic and wood) it might effect him being able to hear if something comes up on the farm. Just my thought :)
That might be it, since the material of the white box is pretty echoing, maybe he'd like a direct wall of wood better
was thinking that too!
At first I thought maybe it's still a size issue toby just being a big dog liking really big space but after this video with him finally using it he's not 100% against it but I can totally see the plastic interfering with the sound a fair amount and with him relying on his senses to protect the livestock at night that could be an issue
He also might not like it being enclosed, Maybe if there was another exit. Doesnt feel "trapped"
you nailed it
maybe since toby likes to be under the duck house, he would also like to stay there at night as well? or maybe that was just a summer thing. i honestly don’t know. the first thing that came to mind, though, was to doing positive association with new beds/places of rest with treats, toys, and other stuff he likes
either way, he’s a very good boy and anything he does is is amazing.
toby: *exists*
brain: *releases serotonin* (:
I suggest tossing the plastic cube, put straw bales around the wood house to block the wind.
The crunchy snow speaks volumes. What a great guard dog. Naturally doing what he was born to do and no complaints. Have yourself a great day.
The blood is probally a rodent caught by an owl. The scatches were probably the wing pattern.
Loved walking the perimeter with you. You have a beautiful piece of property. Love all the animals!!
At that second blood splatter point, it looks like bird wings hit the snow... maybe an owl caught a mouse?
Possible, but that seems like a little too much blood for a mouse. Maybe a rat?
that is what I though also, an animal was running away from a prey and got stopped by the fence.
Definitely looks like owl wings hit the snow. Could have been after a rabbit or vole as well.
Yeah this was my exact thought as well.
Or some other bird. Crow birds usually leave more wingmarks onto the snow. Maybe the bird itself hit the fence?
Good boy. LOL. I just got a Kangal pup, and he's a sweetheart. But he's already doing patrols like a big boy LGD.
Man I can’t believe how big he’s gotten I remember when people were suggesting you get a guard dog in the comments and look at him now 😮
I love to watch you let the animals in the mornings. You're vlogs are fun for a city dweler.
Thank you. :)
“He went from being kujo to boomer the land cloud” 😂
the best part about these videos is i get to see your daily routine.. very peaceful to me. also i just love how the roosters don't crow until they're released 😂
you aint foolin tobs ha lol. looks like pablo is doing the outside round while tobs does the inside ones lol
This is quickly becoming my favourite channel on TH-cam
The animal tracks are super interesting, I guess everyone loves a mystery, or a little curiosity
Your little adventures in the farm are always a joy to watch.
Looks like that blood was for a owl or hawk kill those scratches are from wings.
Yes this!
Yep. Came here to say that.
Around 15:20 looks like another, smaller bird’s wing marks too.
ha ha Toby is Happy something is Really out there ! and Pablo came out to see whats going on
Northern Vermont: what you lose with the cold weather, you totally gain back by having all that non-irrigated but still usable land.
Toby's response to your first growl was only a few seconds. Got to love Toby The Wonderdog..❤
Did anyone else notice the goose slipping on the ice when he let them out? Lol
Yes!!!! So funny!!!😁😁😁
😂👍
My first GP would NEVER sleep in the doghouse--I think it interfered with his security job. He also hated coming in the house--he got too hot.
Pablo knew you were up to something. LOL Guard dog, how about guard cat is early warning system? LOL
Glad you found the problem with the fence. Lovely wing prints there near that blood. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
Toby: My master is always speaking to no one, even after he sneaks up on me at night.
Toby boy is so loved 😊
It's the acoustics on the dog house. He can't hear what's going on around him.
Neat trick with a transistor radio. Will hear audible clicks while walking the fencelines with a portable radio tuned off the station and on high volume. I's a quick and easy way to locate any electrical leakage. Feed Toby in the Dog House to get him to feel it's his house.
chickens were busy playing the floor is lava :o
It's funny because my chickens sit in the rafters too. I don't even know how they get up there.
I wonder if Toby objects to the acoustics of the tote. Maybe he feels it gimps his aural guarding abilities in there.
YAY for Toby Dog finally warming up to his new igloo. It's SO FUN to watch you farming poultry. I hope you have a GREAT new year.
I think Toby doesn't like the echoey sound inside the cube. I know my dog hates any kind of echoey weird reverberation kind of sound.
That could be attenuated pretty early by putting some sort of insulation on the walls
I wondered that too. Maybe some hay flakes stuffed in between the container and wood?
@@WakehurstYew I was thinking glue some felt or something to the inside of the plastic
Such a good boy 😊 doin his job like it's his life's work
I have a Maremma/Great Pyrenees cross as my LGD. I have 2 strands of fence at 15 & 36 inches that are hot. If the cattle decide to stroll, she puts them back. Paid to have 5 strands put up on my first 20 acre pasture. Pulled 3 wires to fence another 90 acres at 15 & 36. I’m a cow/calf operation with pigs & poultry on the side.
doggo sense of smell is unbelievable even if he cant see you he can smell ya
The first thing I thought is, I hope he told his neighbour what he's doing
Toby looks such a sweet dog.... Those eyes are so beautiful. I really do love your dog! New to your channel but I have subbed and will be getting my daily fix of Toby dog and Pablo too! 😁
For your fence spacer: how brittle is the plastic at 7f? If it has passed the glass transition temp it won't be too useful.
Anon, That's what I was thinking. If it was that cold and brittle, just a stiff wind could break it
Congratulations on 200k!
I did this with my dog to see if he would guard the house. i had a mask on.... and the asshole ran jumped behind the couch and hid hahaha!
In my experience with my great pyrenees he never slept in a house id come home hed be asleep on the trampoline watching over yard i think he just wants to sleep whereever. I love your show we just got another pyr puppy i watch your show religiously and love it ive started with 5 chickens...thanks. For these videos much appreciated..even during snow storms he'd be chilling on top of a drift .
The dog house may have a lingering smell from it's previous use, maybe that's why Toby isn't too big a fan? Dogs are more sensitive then we are.
True and Morgan just left HIS scent in there also.
This is my vote. Those container are used for chemicals and Toby doesn't like the smell of it. I can't blame him I wouldn't like to smell roundup or 2-4 D all night either.
@@weston8963 I think it was used for molasses earlier, so that's not the worst smell in the world.
The container is too smelly for a dog to sleep in. I wouldn't use any sort of plastic to make a bed for him.
@@weston8963 The container have being wash and was use for food...I don't think a dog will not like it ;)
