- The Nikon Z9 (our best camera of 2021) continues to get better with the new 3.0 firmware. While 2.0 brought out a lot of headline grabbing features to encourage more photographers to buy the camera, firmware 3.0 seems much more focused on improving the shooting experience for existing users.
To guide you through the latest improvements, we used puppets. No, we don't need give you a reason.

No, actually I think it’s just that they forgot to mention the new “smooth skin” mode as one of the features of the 3.0 upgrade. Apparently, it teams well the brand new AF Mode-Puppet AF.

I thought the Z9 was the new camera that everyone was waiting for? It's apparently almost perfect in every way, one of the best cameras ever produced in history (last reviews I read). I don't know if I'd ever buy one, so I'd like a cheap model that has very very low resolution like 12 megapixels, and extremely good low light video performance for podcasting and TH-cam. I feel like most people today need video features a lot more than photo features. The Z6 is just not ideal for video unless you are good at video editing because the image is too digitally sharpened and it ruins the 24 frames per second "cinema" feel to the footage.
Yeah, Nikon needs to be releasing updated midrange bodies ASAP. As incredible as the Z9 is, the rest of the lineup looks iffy in comparison.

High Speed Zoom is so fun !!! It just made my 3 S primes into 1.8 and 2.8s zooms for video. Stoked ! And mapping to rings is where the real fun begins - feels and looks good / dynamic !

The biggest feature on all Z9 firmware updates will presumably be "raw video still present"... especially if they can nuke (almost) all the bugs and add many enhancements before it becomes a (possible) issue...
So far the only site to uncover ankle roll detection on the Z9. This is the reason I prefer to get my camera info from Dpreview Nikon should also update their firmware release note! 😆

Great video - love the Puppet Muppet Blog and the good speech at 1:10 Lol - some say thought it was an actual human, seriously great video and love the 2 x Digital Zoom option on 1080p - 4K video and my only wish for the Z9 is a pixel shift (still 9-20 fps into 1 combined mega MP) mode. Z9 is really an amazing camera that is getting better from Nikon - lets hope they release the 3rd Gen of Z6 and Z7 shortly along with a Z70/Z90. Quick Q why were puppets used in this blog ?

One of your best videos in a long time... but I can't put my finger on what made is so much better... hmmm.... what could it be?
You know how many years I been asking nikon to allow for real time ambient exposure while having using a flash or trigger and now this is the update we finally can do that?!?? So far the Z series cancels live view exposure preview when the camera detects a ttl contact in the shoe but now we can over ride that finally. Mixing ambient and strobe without a work around to preview the ambient …very happy here hopefully the rest of the line gets this

Jordan, I'm not sure what you did for audio here, but the puppets sounded awfully muffled. Maybe it's just that way because their heads are fabric, but it was pretty weird sounding.

Loved the puppets. More interesting than talking heads. There's an opportunity to use puppet hands to change the controls and caress the lens. There's a free idea for you next time.

It would be nice if they supported cameras like the Z6ii in the same way… I am hopeful that they have some firmware updates in the works with AF improvements for the Z6ii and would be disappointed if the firmware stopped at 1.4.
i pretty sure z6ii will go till 3.0, may be not at same pace
Definally gonna get more updates for z6ii. The Z6 just got a minor update, which Z6ii dont have yet. If they are not planning on more updates for Z6ii, they could just gave Z6ii the same update along side with Z6. So it is very likely that they are making a major update specific to the Z6ii and z7ii, just not ready to release yet. Hopefully before the end of the year. Could be af improvement, maybe even 10bit internal recording.

Yeah man I was laughing out loud. This was a masterpiece. Masterfully done. Like WOW. I never knew you could make such a good video with puppets. The movements and the slightly muffled audio were absolutely on point, and looked very professional. I don't think the audience realizes how hard it is to time all the mouth movements and body movements, they did it perfectly.

All I need is Z9 features in a Z6 body. Cut the frame rates in half, cut the 8K to 4K, and I'm set.

Lots of nice updates but still no way to quickly adjust Auto ISO minimum shutter speed via control dial or FN button + control dial.
Aperture priority, auto ISO, quickly adaptable lowest speed. Ability to freeze motion as needed AND transition from dark to bright ambients instantly.
Please Nikon listen to us!
Could you just use a program mode or a camera profile [A-D] for this? Honestly I haven't ran into this issue. Aren't usually switching dark to light and freezing motion in the same few seconds

Two issues: 1) To get a 2 times digital crop it would need to go down to M43 size, not super 35. 2) Do face and eye detect AF work reliably on puppets?
Yes it does work reliably on puppets. See my community post lol.
You only need 12 mp for 4k; you are conflating sensor size and resolution.

@@rpgroome I think you are. This feature uses the 8k sensor, down-sampled to 4k to achieve 2x pixel density in the FX container. From there you can do all kinds of tricks using that container w resolution. Most of the time this is done in post, though.
I think allusions to Super35/M4:3 are mostly for convenience BUT if literal than the Z9 is a 3 for 1 camera and not a 2 for 1: 45/19/12; nice !

Seriously why is it so hard to program changing the color of the AF box. Seriously. Z9 keeps getting better but the other cameras are left behind. I hope this is a set-up for lower level systems soon to come out.

I tried to set up the Zoom feature and it is grayed out. I get a msg. that says I cannot use it in my cameras current configuration.
I have no idea what I need to change in order to use the zoom feature.
You need to be recording 4K in full frame mode for the HiRes Zoom to work. If it’s still greyed out, let me know.

Nikon fucking showing everyone who's the real king. Wish they would make a z8 & z8a(astro). & give it almost all the hardware & software features of z9 in a smaller body (ofc except battery & extra buttons). That would be such a sony killer.

I think as a photographer we owe the companies nothing but the money we pay for the gear. Likewise the companies feel absolultely no loyalty towards you regardless of what you feel towards them, they only want your money.
@@phelanwolf6747 LOL Nikon makes lighter cameras than even sony even z7ii is lighter than any sony ff body. I'm a nikon shooter. Yeah sony has much better cheaper lens options. But I can't stand the fucking type a proprietary obscenely expensive cards[especially for my burst shooting needs] much prefer the much faster, much higher capacity for money type b's. also sony has become more apple like.
& ofc they only want money that's what any company's goal.
