The next one (on stranger tides) is a favorite of mine, and the next two are also related to the first three. They're not better, but it it worth it, imo for the Dead men tell no tales ending and the Barbosa story ending.

Well, the next movie, On Stranger Tides, feels disconnected with the trilogy with only Jack, Barbossa and Gibbs coming back, feels like a spin off more than a sequel. It does have some bright spots like Jack and Barbossa playing off each other is the highlight of the movie. It's more comical too, it's pretty low stakes fun so check that one out if you want to see a side story with Jack as the main focus. Oh and there's Mermaids, another highlight of the movie.
Dead Men tell No Tales I only saw once and I hated it. Jack was far more goofy in this, like Johnny Depp forgot how to play him. The villain was weak compared to Davy Jones, the East India Trading Company, or even the villain in Stranger Tides, completely forgettable. It was a continuation of the trilogy, but it may as well not have been because Will and Elizabeth make such brief appearances that they may as well have not been in the story or movie. So once again, it's focused on Jack but a goofier, less clever version this time.

Not sure if you noticed, but the sword Davey Jones stabbed Will with was the very same sword Will made for Norrington back in the first film. Norrington was given the sword back by Beckett, but Davey Jones took it from Norrington after he died, and then he goes and stabs Will with it. Will was literally stabbed by his very own sword he made himself. But now Will took the sword after he became the new Davey Jones.

YES, SWORD SYMBOLISM SUPREMACY. Nobody ever talks about this. To me it symbolizes Will's final transformation into a pirate. He starts in movie one hating pirates and creates this sword to give to a captain who wants to hunt them down. By the end of the third movie, he's stabbed through the heart by it. It's like the blacksmith Will dies and pirate Will wakes up.

On another note of "touch of destiny": in Dead Men's Chest when Elizabeth hides on the merchant vessel and they find her wedding dress, the crew makes up this weird story that the dress belongs to a woman who became a widow before her wedding night... well, they became correct here: Will and Elizabeth consummated their marriage after he got his heart cut out of his chest

Beckett's quote "the immaterial has become immaterial" means basically this:
"The immaterial (magical things like myths and legends, monsters and gods) has become immaterial (worthless or unimportant)."
It uses the two meanings of Immaterial in yhe same sentence.
As Beckett's uncontested rule of the seas (using davy jones) has made his and the british navy's authority supreme. Nothing else matters but the profits they can get from global trade, not even the gods like Calypso and monsters like Jones matter anymore.

    Random facts about this movie;
-The sword Will makes in the first movie is the same one he gets pierced with in this one.
-There is a lot of references to real life pirate stuff. Brethren court for example is based on Brethren of the Coast.
-After Jack asks his dad Teague (Keith Richards) about mom and he shows him her shrunken head. Jack ends up carrying the head around his waist.
-What Calypso yells out when she grows can be translated to "Across all the seas, find the path to he who wrongfully entombed me!"
-The parrot was played by two birds. Named Chip and Salsa.
-The actors went underwater to shoot the scene where Black Pearl tips over. This also meant that Pintel's and Ragetti's actors were (safely) tied to a pole and put underwater to act.
-Davy Jones's locker scene was shot in a real place. Utah salt flats.

The song at the beginning, _Hoist the Colors,_ was written for the movie to tell the tale of Calypso, Jones, and the Court. Below is my analysis.
    *The Chorus:*
    _Yo ho, haul together_
    _Hoist the colors high_
    _Heave ho, thieves and beggars_
    _Never shall we die_
The chorus is sung numerous times within the song. It's basically telling the pirates, full of thieves and beggers, to get ready to set sail. The lyrics here are obvious in meaning.
    *First verse:*
    _The King and his men_
_stole the Queen from her bed_
_and bound her in her bones_
The King was the Pirate King at that time, and while his identity is unknown, I believe him to be Jones himself. The King's men refers to the Brethren Court. The Queen is Calypso, her bed is the sea, and binding her in her bones refers to binding her to her human form.
_the seas be ours and by the powers_
    _where we will we'll roam_
The seas literally belong to the pirates due to having power over Calypso.
    *Second verse:*
    _Now some have died_
    _and some are alive_
    _and others sail on sea_
This is a reference to the chorus of the song, which mention the pirates as thieves and beggars. This part of the verse is obvious in meaning.
_with the keys to the cage_
    _and the Devil to pay_
The "keys" to the cage are the nine Pieces of Eight, which were used to bind Calypso. The Devil refers to Davy Jones himself since he's the one that told the Brethren Court how to bind her; he's also a devil of sorts, or what I like to call, an ocean-bound Hades.
    _we lay to Fiddler's Green._
Fiddler's Green is an after-life of paradise for sailors where a fiddle never stops playing, but in the POTC universe, it is a tavern located in Davy Jones' locker. It might have a fiddle playing inside to fit the narrative.
    *Third verse:*
    _The bell has been raised_
    _From it's watery grave..._
_Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?_
    _A call to all_
    _Pay head the squall_
_And turn your sails to home!_
This entire verse may refer to the scene of POTC where the pirates sing their song, and the Brethren Court is summoned to join together. A "all pirates unite" type of moment.

Still, one of my favorite subtle stories in this trilogy...Will's ceremonial sword.
In the first movie, he crafted it and presented it to Commodore Norrington, with it being credited as the finest sword. Norrington held onto it until his resignation.
In the second movie, it could be seen in the background in Beckett's quarters.
In this movie...Beckett returns the sword to Norrington as a gift of his reinstatement. Norrington attempts to use it to stab Davy Jones, quite futilely, and it is given to Jones's crew. In the midst of this maelstrom battle, the sword is dropped and picked up by a random East India Trading Company crewmate but is taken by Jones who then uses it to run through said crewmate, Jones then holds onto the sword for the remaining battle. Finally...Jones uses that sword to stab Will, technically killing him.
The finest sword in the franchise, crafted by Will...is the very sword that killed Will. Such an easy to miss but very poetic detail.

Capt. Teague is none other than legendary guitarist himself Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones, one of the inspirations when Johnny Depp was developing the character of Capt. Jack Sparrow as Johnny is a huge fan of Keith growing up. Btw, Johnny has his own rock band and is pretty damn good, and again a big Rolling Stones fan, so this collaboration with Keith is perfect for the Pirates franchise.

I love this trilogy and the attention to detail is great. First off Elizabeth asking Barbossa to marry them was set up in Dead Mans Chest. Jack told her Captain of a ship can preform a wedding on board. So she knew they could get married. Secondly, again set up in Dead Man's Chest is Will becoming the new Captain of the Flying Dutchman when Tia Dalma said "A touch of destiny." My favourite little detail is Will is stabbed by the sward he made and gifted to Governor Swann in the beginning of Curse of the Black Pearl. The next film is decent as for the 5th one. I genuinely can't remember anything except the opening I think. So yeah says a lot really, but hey up to you they will hopefully make good reactions.

A little extra lore from from some deleted scenes (pls correct me if im wrong in the replies). There was a time when Jack actually tried to go straight and work for Becket. However becket wanted Jack to start shipping slaves, which Jack refused to do and set them free (these might be the ppl on tia dalmas island iirc). This is what earned Jack his pirate brand. He tried escaping but becket caught him and burned/sunk him and the slave ship. Davy Jones raises it up and it becomes the black pearl. This is also why Davy taunts Jack with his 100 souls request in movie 2, as the 100 slaves he freed got him into that mess in the first place.

And That's what The Black Pearl's doing exactly.. Jack found "up is down " situation to go to living world from the dead's world.. After they managed the "up is down" condition, The Black Pearl appeared from under the sea and came to living world.. So, Davy Jones' ship always comes from the world of the dead as it appears (14:00 moment)..That means, the Black Pearl used Davy Jones' entry method only once. action of 14:00

I love to watch how people who have no clue about history react to the whole concept of "rights suspended". Yes, such decisions by the rulers was a common and even normal thing for centuries, millenia even. Slavery was something normal, the divine right to rule of kings and emperors was something normal, theocracy and religious persecution was something normal. Universal constutional rights is a fairly new concept in human history. I m not judging Angelina here, I m just amazed by how people in general have no perspective of how human societies were governed for the vast majority of their history. I ve seen it in many reactors in historical movies. And as a history graduate, it triggers me...

1:58 you know, in the italian dub this scene is completely messed up because when Lord Beckett says "finally" it's translated as "infine" which is not the same as "finalmente", but rather a way to continue a story ("infine we went to the park" almost like an "in the end"??) while finalmente is like "finalmente you showed up! i was waiting for you" so it doesnt make any sense when the soldier says "they've started to sing, sir" and he says "infine" and not "finalmente" but i guess it's because it means like it's the last thing they'll do?? i dont know i understanded this scene only when i watched the movie in English
They actually messed this movie SO BAD bc they changed completely the meaning of the song, here is the "hoist the colours" song i grew up with:
"The king struck her, that lady he kidnapped.
In the sea she came to life.
The most intense sky in the immense sea,
    Those thieves here led.
Yo-ho, glory runs in the afterlife
In the face, alive or dead, she will follow you
Yo-ho, there is no truce, that that glory will live.
In the face, alive or dead, she will follow you.
There are those who are dead and those who do not live,
    Others go to sea.
There are those who already know, death is here,
But they do not care at all.
The beautiful hopes empty my heart.
I always know who I am
    the bell here rings
    here in front of us
yo ho glory runs in the afterlife
in the face alive or dead
    she will follow you
yo ho there is no truce
in the glory she will live
in the face alive or dead
    she will follow you"
    6:33 she's actually a voodoo priestess!!
7:10 i like to think that the phrase "the immaterial became immaterial" it's because davy jones it's a legend and Lord beckett used this phrase to tell him that he's like fruit of the sailors' imagination, while we see that instead davy jones is very much real. with davy jones not doing his job bc at the service of the Company, people might start thinking he's really just a legend, therefore becoming immaterial, disappearing
9:23 he's in davy jones' locker, which means he's in a place worse than hell. in fact, the Black Pearl is stranded and there is no way to take it out to sea and this is the worst nightmare of any pirate
15:37 and im sure someone already pointed this out, but jack became a pirate when he freed a slave ship. that's why his soul is worth a hundred, because that's the number of people he freed. the ship then burned and he made a deal with davy jones to bring it back, that's why the black pearl is black.
there's a deleted scene where lord cutler beckett does this to jack and jack replies "people ain't cargo, mate". unfortunately this scene was deleted, but i discovered it because i have the book with the transcript of the first three films with all the original scenes.
however, this also means that the fifth film doesn't make sense: SPOILER ALERT
if jack becomes a pirate by freeing the slaves, it's incorrect that he's on a ship when he's young and that he becomes captain after winning against salazar
    19:44 LMAOOO IM CRYING
26:53 this is a reference to the first movie when will bails him out of jail :)
34:33 this is a reference to the first movie too! when elizabeth says her surname is turner!!

What's really cool is that the third movie ends with the characters being in similar positions they were in the beginning of the first movie. Barbosa once again steals the Pearl from Jack, but is cheated from his win, Jack may have lost his ship, but is still able to sail in a rowboat, Gibbs once again sleeping on the job, and unfortunately Will and Elizabeth are separated for one reason or another, but every character still has some sense of closure.

At 25:41 Will is down bad for Elizabeth. That guy started off being into her because she's the prettiest unattainable woman that he ever woke up to, so I think it's pretty nice to see that by the end of the trilogy he's very clearly into her as a person that believes in things he respects.
We also often overlook that Elizabeth is SUCH a pirate nerd. In the first movie, she knows weird nautical maneuvers, pirate-style parlay, pirate songs and the obscure exploits of a guy like Jack Sparrow. She starts off being into Will because he's the closest she ever came to her hot pirate fantasy and ends up in love with him because he's just genuinely a good dude.
The mid-fight wedding is some cheese I didn't need, but otherwise their relationship actually is a lot more interesting and well written than people give it credit for.

Fun little lore-factoid: The reason why Beckett said 'Finally' when the pirates started singing... is because he was holding one of the Pieces of Eight in his hand at the time. He knew that the Pieces were charmed by the first brethren court. When the 'Song is Sung' it means that there is a crisis for all pirates, and thus a court must be called. Beckett wanted all the pirates in a single place, so he forced a crisis, and waited for the song.
edit: Also, aside from all the magic stuff, this mass murder of 'Pirates' actually happened in history, and yes, they did in-fact, suspend all rights. If you were accused of Piracy, all rights were gone and you'd be immediately sent for execution, whether you were innocent or not.
