    Notice at about the 8:00 minute mark how smooth you are on the controls, nice and easy! You have an excellent touch! Love watching you fly, you are clearly "part" of the airplane! Too many
    pilots today are ham fisted and simply do not appear as though they are as gentle on the controls as you are demonstrating! I hope others pick up on this visual cue and work to be as smooth on the controls as you are! Excellent piloting!

    So, are we going to start calling the channel, back country 170?! Just kidding. Great content, always love watching the channel. I’ve owned a 1958 182a square tail with manual flaps for 27 years and that’s what I like about it. It has the light controls of a 172 with a 230 hp engine, but then again, it’s still tricycle.😎

    A tricked out 170B is no match for a stock bare bones 180 period! Sticking a 180hp engine makes a fairly decent performer but I liken it to putting granite counter tops in a mobile home. If you look at the blister on the side cowling that is because you have to turn the engine in the engine compartment to change the thrust direction of the propeller because the rudder is inadequate for the amount of thrust an O360 or IO 360 provides. In regards to fuel economy, slowing a 180 down to cessna 170 speeds provides the same fuel economy without the benefit of much better performance with the 180. (a 170b is 35mph slower then a 180)In terms of weight, the 180 carries more safely. The only advantage with the 170B is the awesome over the nose visibility on approach. The supercub in regard to take off and landing blows the doors off a 170b 7 days a week and twice on sunday. They are not even in the same universe. However slower and cramped is spot on. Does this take away from the fact that this guy has a really nice capable 170b that does some really cool back country stuff? Nope. Just don't get drawn in to believing that a 170B with a 180hp engine will do what a 180 will do.

    • @motoadveBackcountry182
      @motoadveBackcountry182  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like the lightweight feel of the 170, a 180 flies different, 170 approaches and lands slower, you can take it to smaller gravel bars , which is what I like to do.
      In STOL contests the numbers of 170s take offs and landings are shorter than on 180s, I have my 182 when I want to carry heavy loads, maybe if I only can have one airplane then probably the 180.

    • @scottnelson6293
      @scottnelson6293 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@motoadveBackcountry182 Thats because they land at min weights. The Valdez and other shows don't reflect real life performance. Take all of the airplanes that compete and make them land and takeoff at MAX weight and you will see much different outcomes.

Now I'm considering a back country airplane, and really like the concept of the "Super 170". Or would you have other things that should be considered when looking at 170B models?

      Still don't have the prop clearance and the nose wheel of the 182 is a weak point. I'm not sure there's a stand alone canard STC and only the King Katmai and I think one other specialty 182 have them. But I could be wrong. Tailwheels are better for off airport ops, no matter what you do to a nosewheel.
