    Thank you Professor! We enjoy your experiences, skills and useful opinions. A friend formerly flew a Cessna 205 in Haiti, around the country on a regular service route. Plenty of skill challenging situations. I first enjoyed flight year 1947 in a Stinson out of a town called Vernon, B.C. -very small strip but able to take DC-3s. Thanks for your wisdom! Watching you!

    A couple considerations. #1: Most of us don't own two or more airplanes, so we need to do everything with whichever airplane we do own. #2: Those of us who explore and land at new places in the extreme boonies that we (or anyone else) has never visited before cannot be certain what rocks, boulders, logs, holes, ditches and other "irregularities" we may encounter when we land for the first time. This is true no matter how many low and slow passes we make over the potential landing spot before we actually land, because the kind of "irregularities" that can tear off the wheels or flip/crash the airplane are very similar in size and shape as "irregularities" right at the boundary of being visible or invisible during diligent low, slow inspection passes.
    Which makes me think the following. I know many bush pilots who would never land anywhere that hasn't been explored and "opened up" by those other "crazy" kinds of bush pilots who do land where no pilot has gone before. So they can (assuming they are prudent and diligent) know in advance whether they can land their nose-wheel airplane with relatively small tires at a given place or not, then limit themselves to those spots they know are compatible with their plane. And in most cases their nose-wheel airplane will work just fine.
    But those bush pilots who open up new spots and/or want/need to explore [extremely] marginal locations need to have an airplane that [hopefully] *NEVER* gets destroyed when they land at a location with severe "irregularities" ... whether known in advance or not. Landing at even one bad spot is enough to destroy your airplane, so owning an airplane good enough for 99% of marginal locations is insufficient. And as those bush pilots in this category know, more than 1% of new spots are too marginal or "irregular" to survive.
    The bottom line is: which kind of bush plane you need depends upon what kind of bush pilot you are, and which kinds of places you plan to explore. Unless you are rich and/or lucky enough to be able to afford two or more bush planes so you can have one suited for every mission.

      600x6 Nose gear is a must. A tail skid is useful.
      ALL bush flying requires comproises to confort and convenience.

    A comparison to a c-180/185 with stol kit and bush tires like the 170 would be interesting too. The extra weight of those two models would address your issue with winds in the 170. It could be the kind of question asked by many potential buyers would ask if choosing between a more expensive c-180/185 and a 182 modified like yours. There is a company in the Seattle area doing amazing work remanufacturing c-170s, 180s and 185s. Have you heard of them? Personally, I would choose your 170 any day‼️😍.

    • @motoadveBackcountry182
      @motoadveBackcountry182  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bushliners, I go land at their place often and visit, I choose the 170 because it is more fun to fly than a 180 or 185, I dont need to carry much weight

  • @hotrodray6802
    @hotrodray6802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    With normal tires each airplane climbs better at VX with flaps UP.
    Even slightly better with flap gap seals.... which do hurt slow flap down approaches slightly. Of course, getting out is harder than getting in, so is it significant? 🤔
    Popping 3 notches on takeoff significantly reduces accelleration.
    Aaah, yes... Ive tried it once or twice. 😁

      Robertson STOL kills your ailerons at slow speed. It’s ok on a 206 but terrible on 180/185 wings

    • @hotrodray6802
      @hotrodray6802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At low speeds cranking those ailerons will get you a stall spin.
      Going slow requires RUDDERS.
      JME, JMO.😎

    • @hotrodray6802
      @hotrodray6802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No offence intended:
      You modern poorly trained low time pilots need to realize that when the horn is blowing you better not be deflecting ailerons. Sooner or later you will get an aileron stall.
      Forward slip landings require a little more caution.
      Ever see those STOL contest video where the guy with 6,000 hours stalls the left wing at 40 ft altitude and spins in???
      When a wing drops the normal reaction is to pick it up with aileron. BAD.
      Slow requires RUDDER ONLY

    • @hotrodray6802
      @hotrodray6802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A classic case of popping an aileron. zoom in and watch the aileron spin.
      Look up
      "Talkeetna Fly-in Crash" on YT.

    • @hotrodray6802
      @hotrodray6802 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Talkeetna commentary blames the spin on left wing drag.
      NO
      It is the increae of ANGLE OF ATTACK that stalled the left wing.
      Note right wing... the instant the left wing stalled he skammed in FULL right aileron.
      Classic stall spin.
      At least he was ok.
