  • Many people ask for an electric bike that can shift automatically and historically there have been very few on the market. I think this bike It’s going to be a game changer. It’s already been very popular in our shop and the response has been really positive for those who tested it.
    Sure automatic gears are not for everybody. But the idea of automatic gears on a bike for utility makes a lot of sense from my perspective. I anticipate that will save many more bikes in the future with this drivetrain.

    Just bought one today from local Tern dealer. Should have mine by this weekend, so my dog Max and I can go on adventures together. Thanks Chris for all you great Tern videos. Very informative! Thanks for the tip for riding in the "manual" mode. I live in Colorado Springs with many hills, so it allows me to even pedal downhill, rather than coasting. And also note, I'm 62 so electric peddle assist is going to allow me to bike in the Rockies with my aging knees. And I'm just barely 4'10" tall and shrinking and the Tern bikes accommodate my small stature as well. Highly recommend any of the Terns to anyone of any age or height. Enjoy the road and be safe!

    What happens with shifting when the battery dies? Will it still shift or it’s stuck to the last gear used before the battery dies?

    Another great review. Interesting bike because yesterday I was wondering whether any manufacturers had developed an automatic gear shift system; well done Tern for doing this, great looking bike.

    Looks like a good commute bike. Compact enough to store in a hallway if no garage, and the same at work. I could have kept one in my office during the day. And love the fact you can get the Tern accessories for it. Good all round bike, like it.

    Nice and compact. Perfect for city and travel.
    This bike with a car trip or bus trip to some weekend trip can perfect. Imagine this bike on a the combo of train + weekend trip.
    Also it's much more friendly to urban pedestrians, because it's lower and more compact on the sidewalk.

    Finally!!! I was wondering when an Ebike would have an auto gear switch, Would love to see a Haibike eMtn Bike with this feature!!!

      I don’t think this would function so great on an eMTB but maybe that will be a future development.

    Once about 10 years ago my brother bought a mountain bike but he wasn’t aware of how to use the gearing system because I think before that he had only ridden grip shift when he was a kid. He hadn’t ridden for a few years. I tried to give him some pointers but he basically clicked everything at once and broke it after about 10 minutes. He had put so much force through it that he had ended up with the chain on the outside of the bottom part of the derailleur. So he bent the metal and it bent back afterwards.The bike shop mechanic said he had never seen anything like it :) After that he bought a single speed for commuting. So maybe this is his next bike XD
    For me, I quite like riding totally different cadences when I’m on a geared bike so it’s probably not my kind of thing. But it’s definitely cool and I love tech like this that moves the industry forward.

    Excellent review! Out of curiosity, is there a reason why Tern chose to outfit the HSD with a suspension fork but not the GSD? I'm a GSD owner and due to the extremely poor quality roads I'm always wondering how much difference having that suspension fork would have made.

    How do you find the automatic shifting when going downhill? Does it always pick up that you're going downhill and shift to the higher gears?

    Hi Chris, could you please elaborate further on setting cadence on displace for the automatic gear? I don't like loose pedaling (like riding down hill on low gear) and would like to have a bit of constant resistance as I pedal regardless of train and modes of motor assist. With other types of gear I always shift constantly to the right level so I maintain that little resistance. But With Tern HSD S+ I can't seem to be able to figure out how to establish such control. I am aware of the two functions of setting cadence and shifting the gear on display, but am struggle with setting the two variable at such numbers that gives me a pleasant continuous resistance. Any tips?

    Its like the rival of the RiesenMueller Tinker. Gen3 Bosch is not bad its just it came and gone too fast imo now that gen4 is even smaller more powerful.., idk what took Tern too long though.
    Now the Tinker is on the Performance Speed / CX lines and now with the Cobi support update for their cockpits. With only those specs, it is already outperforming the 2020 HSD s10+ as a 2017 ebike.. if you dont purchase the Smartphone hub Cobi but get the Suspension seatpost on the Tinker, it puts them both this HSD s10+ and the Tinker at the same price: 5200$.
    The Tinker is a much cleaner looking more aesthetically refined Ebike, notice the internal cable routing of the cables in the Tinker compared to the HSD. Just perfect.
    Tern insists keeping the Valo front light, however imo they should retire their light and give space priority for a better cockpit design with the Bosch Kiox and now Smartphone Hub option, and with Supernova mini lights it would be perfect. Dont get me wrong i like their Valo light too, id keep those lights in their non electric bikes since it is Dynamo, but that light is Married to the handlebar! lol, making the position of the big Intuvia display a little awkward.
    And lastly the Tinker has 2 more Metallic color options , makes it a sexy little ebike.
    The HSD is still a good option for its cargo but at that point you might as well consider the GSD and have the option to have dual battery.
    If there is one thing the Tinker should have had from the HSD is the Magura mt4,5 brakes, especially for the HS version, other than that the Tinker wins, and thats not even a Gen4 Tinker that i hope they make soon.
    At 5200$ for the above reasons, the HSD comes out overpriced even with those premium specs, its real price range should have been 4000-4500$. Just my thoughts.

      Good perspective for sure, but I think both of these bikes have their own merits. Autoshifting is a big deal for many people, but some prefer the manual version. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. They are definitely well received.

      Thank you for the info. One thing I like about the hsd is the ability to stand vertically as I need that functionality to (more) easily use a lift. Do you know if you can put a Tinker in an elevator without scratching the mud guards? What would you recommend for a commuter that needs to store its bike indoors everyday? Thanks

      Maybe I’m wrong but, and even if I can understand the comparison, the tern is kind of middle size long tail cargo. What I know about the tinker is it’s a great bike but not a lot of possibilities to carry stuff. So my point is both of those bikes are very expensive, one have better specs for you, but to me the frame of the HSD makes the difference, it opens a lot of possibilities. And personally having a bike above 4 000 euros without good carry capacities it’s a deal breaker. I got my track bike for that, it’s very fast and much cheaper... so the way to go with electric bike to me is cargo. (Excuses my English I’m french:) )

    I am seriously considering buying this bike. It has everything that I’ve been looking for on a bike of this style. I do have just a couple questions:
    1. I don’t really have any use or intentions to use the back rack, so is it capable of being removed to give the bike a more sleek look?
    2. Which version of the Bosch Performance Line Motor is included on the bike (Cruise or Speed)? Also, does the motor have the same footprint as the Performance Line CX? I’m just curious if it would fit it’s possible to switch out the motor if I wanted to upgrade.

      Cool. Real quick. 1, this is possible, but you’ll need to find a place for the light. 2, it’s a different footprint and you can’t swap unfortunately. I don’t think it’s needed though.

    This is a very nice bicycle...
    If they install a belt guard, and make a more adjustable hand bar(to allow low height), it would be near perfect.
    And I wish there were a 24" version.

    So, what happens with the Enviolo automatiq when you run out of battery power? Do you stay in whatever happened to be the last gear that you were in, or does it default to some gear ratio in between? Can you even ride?

    Awesome videos, thank you. I have a Riese & Muller Tinker Nuvinci Vario and love it but it is super heavy. find it hard to balance when riding slowly...I Do mostly city riding in SF with lots of hills and traffic. Test rode the Tern s8i and really enjoyed but the s+ is not available for awhile..can you compare both bikes for me? I didn't mind shifting the s8i and worry the Enviolo automatiq will be too fussy if I'm in traffic and need to climb a hill on demand and won't be ready because I need to change the cadence. At the same time, my Tinker is so easy to ride, I don't think about shifting and enjoy but I do shift. Also is the Tinker and S+ comparable in weight when riding? the s8i felt so light and just loved it. Thanks for your detailed and insightful videos. Really enjoy! Thanks! Barb

      @Jane Thorson if you’re able, ride both. The tinker shifting System is hard to beat. The tern is a more affordable price. I’m also only 5’0. If you’re over 5’3” you could easily ride both.

      From what I'm reading, this Tern HSD S+ is 59 lbs; the R&M Tinker is 55 lbs.... I too am looking at these Tern bikes as compared to the R&M Tinker..the HSD S+ is about the same price now as the Tinker at $5,500....

      Thanks Gregg! We were experimenting with some new techniques on this video so it's possible that we had some issues with the focus. This bike is made in Taiwan as with all Tern bikes if I didn't mention it.

    I couldn't find this bike listed on Tern's website (6-17-23). Have there been problems with the "automatic transmission", or because of the automatic shifting being dependent on the bike's battery (main power supply)? That is, when the battery power is depleted, are you stuck in whatever gear the bike happens to be in when the power died? That would be hard to pedal back home!

    It's a very interesting bicycle. If the handle bar height were adjustable would be perfect. Climbing steep hill with a high handlebar is not easy.
    Also, there's a need for a belt guard...somebody might get the pants or skirts caught .

    I've been waiting to see what the passenger kit for this bike looks like... This is the first glance I've seen (and it's barely that). Any word from Tern when that might be released?
    Also, is the HSD S+ available now, it is it just trickling slowly into the market? I haven't seen any dealers that carry it yet.

    Thanks for a useful video Chris. 2 questions:
    Do you think Bosch will software update the power on this new Gen 3 motor like they did with Gen 4 recently? 65>75nm or whatever - heard any rumors?
    and
    How does the Enviolo Automatique manage going downhill? Does it recognise you are coasting yet accelerating, and put you into a higher gear?
    Nice bike (shame they couldn't internally route more of the wiring - would look better for that)
    Feel this top-spec model should be $4795, or $4995 max to get more folks onboard. But... that's me.

    Hi Chris, do you know if the gear interface eg. the automatic part is compatible with the N380 hub and is it retro- fixable?

      technically it is, but not all frames are compatible and it can be tricky to integrate into the eBike motor system if that is of interest.

      This bike is made of Aluminum. The battery is warrantied for two years, but most people see 1000 charge cycles out of a Bosch battery.

    Excellent video. Ive owned a S+, bought as new from our local dealer in North devon UK, for about 2 months. Within the first month the bike kept showing error 596. The dealer said its nothing to worry about. Then the rear hub felt ‘gritty’ when pedalling and finally it seized all together showing error 761 - return bike to dealer! It had only done maybe 50 miles.
    The rear hub was replaced under warrenty, no problem and off we went. We cycled 10 miles today and the bike was like it was stuck in 1st gear. I had to pedal furiously to make any ground and the bike just would not shift up. It’s exhausting rather than being pleasant. The Cadance is set to 30, the lowest it will go. This makes absolutely no difference. It was interesting seeing the tip to change it to a manual electric shift, thank you for that. I’m going to try that tomorrow. Meanwhile, any idea why it should be seemingly stuck in 1st gear? 👍

      It's possible the overdrive on the hub needs to be reset. I would recommend always using a cadence over 45 because using a low cadence can over stress the shifting mechanism.

    Hi Chris, good reviewr as always, but this time I missed soem information. Automatic shifting is not a common feature and I would have liked to hear more about how it feels and how it performs.
    Different to manual gears the speed is no longer a function of cadence but a function of the pedal force - am I right?
    How does that feel? Is it intuitive? Does it make a difference if you ride in the plain or in hilly terrain? Can you override the pre-selected cadance quickly?
    Would be great if you could do an „automatic transmission special“

      Great feedback. I will try and make a video specifically on the Enviolo Automatiq. I will say it feels very natural and intuitive. Some prefer keeping the manual control and it is possible to override the auto shifting with a 9 predefined steps and that’s nice, especially in hilly areas where you might need to preemptively shift into a lower gear. You can also quickly change the cadence on the fly which is nice.

      @@Propelbikes I think you're making a lot of random statements which makes it hard to keep watching the video. The automatic shifting is there for the bike being an electric bike. You don't feel the pedal force feedback. And why does the chain last much longer??

      Sorry that it’s difficult to follow. The bike still has plenty of pedal feedback as you need to pedal the bike. It doesn’t have a throttle like some electric bikes.
      The bike doesn’t have a chain, or has a carbon belt which lasts several times longer than a chain and it doesn’t require oil.

      @@Propelbikes It may be the case that a carbon belt lasts longer than a chain, but normally a chain of good quality never wears out so who's to say which one is better? Found it so random. Nothing wrong with the video.

    Can I take on flights? I'm thinking of selling all my bikes and get an ebike.

      The challenge is that you can’t take a battery this size on an airplane. The batteries on this bike are usually easy to come by if you are regularly traveling places, but it’s not so easy to just take the bike on the plane unfortunately.

      It did, but it’s not appropriate for all applications. This Gen 3 motor is very well suited for this bike.

    the mileage for that small battery is not accurate that it would get....maybe if you use it on pedal assist it would get closer to there claim but even that way it would not get that range.

      It is pedal assist. The claim is clearly stated on the display and it’s actually really accurate.

      @@Propelbikes like i said i seen much larger batteries that even with pedal assist they don't reach 80 miles so smaller battery i mean you can't get juice from thin air.

    these bikes are amazing but seriously, how are people able to use 5k bikes on a daily basis? i just cannot trust people to not steal or destroy something like this when i lock it up in public. I live in melbourne too, a decent city.
    I have a diy ebike kit, i would definitely upgrade but every time I think about it, I cannot get past this.

      We know countless people who do this. Good locks and insurance. Bike theft is being taken more seriously in many areas and it’s not an issue in many places. I respect your method, but I’m not going to limit my experience or enjoyment because of this risk. I’d rather plan for it and enjoy my life to its fullest. Fortunately I’m not alone here or I’d have a tough time with my business.

      It’s always risk vs reward. I have this bike’s big brother, the GSD, and it’s a matter of using commonsense and securing as best as you can. A wheel lock with plugin chain is optional, and Abus have locks with an integrated alarm, with motion sensing to discourage tampering.
      The latest generation of Bosch motors and controllers have some security too, the motor can be coded to a removable display which locks the motor when not on the bike.
      The other factor is that as you can stand it upright on the rear rack and fold the handlebar, you can often put them in more secure locations than other bicycles.

      This bike doesn't have a throttle, but I don't think you need it. It can get 50+ miles on the low assist, but closer to 25 miles on the higher level of assist.

    Who edits your writing? (an electric bike that can shift "it scares" automatically), (It’s already been very popular "and" in our shop and the response has been really positive), (the idea of automatic "yours" on a bike), (I anticipate that will "save" many more bikes) Come on, those are rookie mistakes one proof read would have caught, I suggest turning off the spell-check, You'll have much better results without it, or at least read over what you've written before hitting the comment button.

      I appreciate it. I don’t use text to speech too often, but it’s been helpful as I do have a lot to write and I’m not always so fast at typing my thoughts. I’m working on getting some better workflows down. The video thing keeps me busy with an already very busy life managing the business.
