What is heart rate variability? Should you measure it?

  • Heart rate variability is a non-invasive metric to identify anutoninic nervous system imbalances.
HRV heart rate variability is good when you are in a more relaxed state. And HRV heart rate variability is bad when you are stressed, not sleeping well, or overtraining.
Tracking HRV heart rate variability is a nice motivational tool to change behaviour.

    High PNn50 values are…good?

Here's what I don't understand. They say higher HRV is good and low HRV is bad. If we're talking about variability wouldn't it make sense that you would want low variability, meaning a heart rate that is more consistent with less variability? I can't seem to find any explanation on this in a way I can understand it.

From what I understand a heart that reacts to your surroundings is healthy. If you stand up and walk upstairs then sit down. A healthy heart goes from many 60 bpm then hits 100 bpm really fast. In the stairs. Then as you sit down it goes back to 60 really fast.
A health heart also reacts if you take a deep breath the hr goes up and as you exhale hr goes down.
Just think of the days where you’ve had a fever. The heart beats like a steady machine. Even if you try to sleep. If you have a panic attack it beats hard and steady too. If you are super stressed and have high cortisol your heart beats steady like a drum machine too.
If you relax. Seep well. Meditate. Are present etc. even creative etc. your heart will be with your moves like a companion. And react to whatever you are ding. Waiting two three or four beats the heart follows you.
A health heart follows your moves within seconds.

The idea of HRV measurement was primarily designed for 24-hour-long ECG records. Generally speaking, when a heart is in constant modulation from the sympathetic nervous system, it is losing its' resources and has a higher chance of arrhythmia. And it can be detected when the heart has low HRV.

Hi what should your heart rate variability number be,I wear a Fitbit and it says my heart rate variability is 26ms to 47ms it varies, can you tell me it should be.I am a 45 year old male.

What is a good heart rate variability number for 45 year old male,I check my Fitbit when I wake up in the morning

You want the number to be closer to the 47 rather than the 26. If it’s closer to 26, it means you are stressed.

But is higher variability healthier or lower and if so, why?

Thank you for your comment on heart rate variability. There are lots of options out there to look at heart rate variability. You do not want too much variability in between heart beats.

@@HeartfitclinicI Err .. In general, a higher heart rate variability (HRV) is considered better as it indicates a more adaptable and resilient autonomic nervous system, which can respond effectively to different stressors .

My understanding is - there is no “normal range”, everyone is different. Your device, if worn correctly, will provide the normal range for you and provide a score of 0-100 based on breathing, recovery, resting heart rate and sleep. If I am at 79% and higher I am happy

This is a fifth grade explanation. Not detailed enough. Whats a good range? Whats a bad range? What indicators do i need to be keen to? What things specifically help HRV?

Hi if you’re already in sensing questions you should take time out to answer them it was a good question does it matter if your rate for your ability is high or is it better to keep it low you never answer the question if you’re going to give information people are going to respond with questions you actually should take time out to answer them.
