Good choice for No.1, Tim. I've kept a beady eye on PSDT for a number of years now, and he has grown as a player in leaps and bounds. He plays his guts out. Keep up the good work.
6 is probably a weak list because its a non-specialist position, so many of the best blindside flankers will be specialists in another position. A list of the 10 best blindside flankers could include Doris, Kwagga, Christie, Cros, Kremer, and Mostert, but you can't include them because you have them on other lists.
Thanks Tim. Your podcast is "numero uno" for me! Your love for the game shines through! No discernible bias! Keep up the good work. You are a credit to the game!
Hooray Peter is still there! Yeah I think it's fair to say time has come for POM but I'll be interested to see what he does after. Honestly he could do a cooking show and I'd watch it.
Can you imagine PSDT and Jerome Kaino playing on the same team? You wouldn't need a Bomb Squad. The opposition would quit after ten minutes due to GBH and PTSD. I'd pay to watch the carnage! Also, Tim, interesting idea to sometimes use PSDT at #8. Wouldn't be the first time. Springbok Coach Kitch Christie moved the great #4 Mark Andrews to #8 in the '95 RWC final. We all thought he'd lost his mind, and it worked! The jaw dropping disbelief regarding the Andrews move was as big as when Rassie first pulled a 7/1 split, and then against France calling a scrum in our own 22, and I'm not kidding, Bok fans were wide eyed. And it worked! Glad you had a great time in SA, we'll see you back here for the AB's Tests!
@@granvilleheights3411 NO-one would survive that loose forward line up! NO-one! Even Schalk said Collins was the hardest he'd ever played against, and Collins said the same about Schalk. Now add in PSDT and you can write your Final Will and Testament if you're on the opposition side.
That's a fair list. As a kiwi, I'm disappointed that we don't feature on this list. This will be one of the positions that our coach will want to see improvement from as we go through a rebuilding phase.
I reckon that if the AB's (and Crusaders) had better depth at lock in recent years, Scott Barrett would be on this blindside list. He's in the AB's at either 4 or 6 depending on the quality of the alternatives in those positions. If he hadn't spent so much time playing as a 4, he'd be near the top end of 6's. (I'm from across the ditch.)
Thanks Tim, think this with the way the modern game is played and people moving all over the back-row, this is a very difficult pick, as is locks, backrow and the open-side flank. So kudos for giving us a quality list. As a discussion point, I would like you consider some of the other tier-1 and tier-2 nations as well, like: - Tornike Jalagonia from Georgia - Sione Havili-Talitui from Tonga - Michael Leitch from Japan - Martin Sigren from Chile instead of choosing two or more players from some countries, as it means one of them plays more than the other one, whereas the ones mentioned above plays most opf the games and most of them for 80 minutes. Plus I consider Gonzales as an openside flank, as I would put Marcos Kremer (who has played there a lot for Argentina, but has also played lock and backrow, which makes it difficult). But I can still not complain too much on the rest of the substance of your list, as it is you who do the work to put this list together. What makes all of PSDT performances even better is that at a point in his career, he could have lost his leg in 2020, when he contracted a haematoma which developed into acute compartment syndrome, meaning the injured tissue in his muscle had swollen to such an extent that it cut off the blood supply to the rest of his leg. The fact that they identified this early enough saved his leg, as half the known cases (which is rare to begin with), ended up in amputation of the leg. Considering that there are still nerve damage in his leg, is a lesson to us all never to give up, and think that is why he is who he is. He never gives up and will just continue to be one of the best. He also showed us, that tackling hard, does not mean you have to tackle high or use illegal tactics to stop opponents. His tackle height in the World Cup final of 2023 was and is one of the best individual performances in an absolute crunch game. Thanks again Tim
Peter O'Mahony, the 'War God'!! There's a title that any flanker would be happy having. We are going to miss him (yeah even as a Leinster fan) - what a leader.
Agree on PSTD moving to 5, Tim. Was busy typing my message, "wondering if I was the only one thinking that," until you mentioned it. I see him replacing Franco Mostert in time. They're really very similar players, with BJD coming in at 7 for the Boks.
I'd probably have Gonzalez and maybe even Matera at open-side. As you say, Gonzalez will likely become an 8 along the way. As a mobile mountain, I'd have Marcos Kremer on this list, as he epitomizes the concept of an enormous man smashing people and things like the Hulk. Just a huge man with remarkable mobility, I suspect you'll have him on your next list. ;^)
I am neither sure where to place our French player in the back row comparing other teams, so fine to have Ollivon here ^^ I tend to agree with your ranking, even if I am not sure Ollivon was that good this year
I would venture moving Psdt to 8 for the world cup. But he has played a lot on the locks provincially. How he age the next few years will determine that. He is the 🐐
I can’t see PSDT replacing Sous, he’s second only to PSDT in tackles made with great technique and 100% completion rate in RWC 23. The greatest competition in the bok loose forwards atm is at no. 8
I was a bad 6 when I played . . . . in those dark old days we had only 2 jobs (1) tackle tackle tackle until you are either injured or dead (2) do not on any terms touch the ball unless it's to pass it to someone better than you after you have crushed someone in the tackle! . . . .I have watched rugby change so much in the years after I played around the skills and mobility of the backrow forwards I am now glad I'm a supporter rather than a player!
Glad to see Peter O Mahony still there. Some servent to Munster, Ireland and British & Irish Lions. Good picks on the whole Tim. I have really enjoyed watching PSDT over the last few years, I was a bit disappointed how he reacted at the end of the match in Durban against Ireland, thought he came across a sore loser, but he is still a great player.
Very often (not always) being sore about losing is what drives top sports people to become champions. They really hate losing. They don't just shrug and hope things go better next time. I know it's only been one game but as a fan it's what I want to see continue and I hope Schmidt rolls with it. A back row of McReight at 7, Harry Wilson at 8 and Bobby V at 6 looks the business. If it does carry on in TRC, I fully expect to see Bobby V transfer from the top ten 8s to this list.
With McReight needing to get his thumb fixed (he played the last 3 tests with it busted) it will be interesting to see how Joe sets up the Wallabies forward pack. We'll find out in about half an hour - I think squad is announced at 2pm AEST.
@@Hiltok Yeah gutted that him and Liam Wright are going to miss the 2 bok tests. Would kill to have Pistol Pete back in the country but will probably be Tom Hooper (unless the other more qualified Hooper can be brought back somehow 🤔)

Yes he is on the decline but you need nastiness at the blindside flanker spot and your not getting nastier than lawes and the war god. I would start Beirne at blindside against Australia and have Itoje and McCarthy starting just for sheer bulk and physicality. Having Lawes come off the bench against the Aussies would be epic.
Matt Fagerson will be this generations Richard Hill, the most sung unsung hero. And I think he should swap with Matera and possibly Gonzalez but I do love both of them. Can’t argue too much with that list though
This is my argument for being the goat. World cup final time, who would you pick to play if you could choose anyone from any team, from any era and would play better than your current players. Du pont or Carter? Me, as a saffa, PSDT, Schalk burger or Malcolm Marx. I feel they would win you games when it matters.
I think Dupont is just as, if not more, game breaking than DC and is a jackal threat on top. The only thing DC has over Dupont at the moment is a larger body of work and being in one of the greatest teams to ever be assembled.
@D4N1CU5 DC could still win games, even if his pack was going backwards. Not taking anything away from du pont. He is phenomenal, but as a coach I could easily take fourie du preez or Aaron smith or faf de klerk, with dan Carter, not the other way around. But that's just me.
I agree with your list and also that BJD will be on your list, add Elrich Louw and Ruan Venter. This is one position the Boks are going to dominate the next 12 years.
Egg Chasers my guy, you came to our country, saw beautiful landscapes, got offered ice-cream and all. You mentioned the young English players, who have been fire 🔥 even going down to the u20, Eng has plenty off talent. I'd like to know how SA stacks up against. It's intriguing even with the other nations, but for Fcuk sake which country has the best U20s 😅? Or even younger
It would be interesting to see at the end of your scoring system, which team overall has the lowest total, adding up the the number rankings you assigned the players. Then to see the total team gap between the next teams. Theoretically the team with lowest total would be you best ranked collective but how does it compare to actual rankings...?
Baird's problem, is he's very useful off the bench, and hap O'Mahoney is captain, and Ireland will probably start Doris there next with Conan at 8, or Beirne there and Ryan in the 2nd row,.
Agree that this is the poorest quality position, Du Toit and Ollivon aside who are both absolutely world class. The former has a claim to be the best ever blindside flanker.
Pablo Matera is a rugby god. Despite his bigotry, ive always been a fan. When he captained the Pumas, he was sublime. A great player, despite possibly being a shitty dude. PSDT, certainly is the Standard.
As a Scottish fan I think Ritchie is overrated here. You're bang on saying he will be fighting for his place, because Andy Christie in the 6 nations was the best back rower when he played. Scotland shoukd finally embrace a larger backrow with Christie, Fagerson and Dempsey
It’s funny that French players have consistently topped these rankings yet their performances on the pitch don’t seem to correlate. I can’t help but think that they are collectively quite overrated. DuPont is constantly touted as the goat despite only winning one six nations, never getting past a World Cup quarters and never winning a test in the southern hemisphere. The counter argument is that he can’t be judged for the quality of his team but then his team mates are also ranked incredibly highly on rankings like this. Is DuPont overrated or are the French players generally?
Maybe take a look at how things happen, dupont didn't win in the southern hemisphere? Maybe because the french staff choses to take développement teams on tour, and he can't win games he is not involved in. He didn't win this year's 6nations, maybe he wasn't there either, being with the 7's squad... didn't win à world cup... got out in Japan after dominating wales depsite an early red card on a very disputable last minute try awarded by M Peyper in bit of à hurry. Also this year à single point defeat to the WC winnners while playing with a face fracture... so ok you can donwplay his achievement all you like but he still has a grand slam, 2 european/ south african club titles and top 14 titles to his name...and France won against every major countries across the last years when they had their A team... i guess some just look at what suits them because they don't want to remember that they got very lucky even if they were not actually the better team...
@@clementbatut4053 No he has opportunities to win games in the southern hemisphere and hasn’t. He may have missed this years six nations yet has had plenty of chances yet only won one. He may have got injured in the World Cup yet I thought in the game agaisnt New Zealand Aaron Smith looked better. Besides Barrett had far more clams to being the goat than Dupont.
Having Cunningham South at 6 after he's only played 6 matches at international level is a bit of a stretch especially when you say for other players that them not having enough experience at international level excludes them from the list(which is correct).
According to the England Rugby website. Cunningham South averaged 18 mins per match for a total of 72 mins played for his first 4 matches. How is he so high up here? Higher than Ritchie and Baird is crazy in my opinion. Maybe its because im not English :p
POM contributed absolutely nothing for munster when they were dished by Glasgow in the URC knock out rounds. Ritchie has been excellent this season in a poor Edinburgh side.
O'Mahony isn't even the best 6 in Munster, much less top 10 in the world. Baird doesn't yet deserve his place on the list either, but hopefully he'll get there
@@EggchasersRugby I'm shocked to find any player list without at least one Kiwi in the top 10. International Rugby is the most competitive ever and I love it.

No way the Italian is above the Irish duo. England will start to reap the rewards of great youth teams. I’d like to see them testing their youth though. Maybe it is time the rest of the rugby world start to test juniors… just saying (whoops).
Unlike soccer it is a harder jump. The way to get youngsters on national team is good playing time in top clubs. Most national teams do not have that control all it is an option for Ireland and new Zealand.
Why people says antonia dupont is the best player ? can he side step pass a single player? kolbe and arense have done it million times against New zealand and Ireland including france in world cup. when you say a player is the best in the world he must perform in the biggest stage and for me he hasn't. He is the best in perhaps northhemisphere not in south hemisphere. he isn't scarying us in south guys.

That won't work .But assign no 1 as 10 points ....,no 10 as 1 point then it will
Baird's problem, is he's very useful off the bench, and hap O'Mahoney is captain, and Ireland will probably start Doris there next with Conan at 8, or Beirne there and Ryan in the 2nd row,.
Ireland know that they need to play when pom is gone.
Something that they do homework on.
Bod
Sexton
The closer he gets to number 9, the more I fear for the channel 😱😱😱
Agreed on Fagerson and Dempsey. And Christie V good. But Darge...love him!
@EggchasersRugby darge is a tough one. I'm a huge fan but he needs to get to prime Hamish Watson's Jackling threat before he's nailed on.
The fact nz dont have one 6 in a world top 10 is ridiculous. We just can't find one since Kaino left 🤦
Where would Jack Willis be if eligible?
Surely Kremer can be considered as Argentinas blind side with Matera at 7?
As Beirne is likely to be a 6 going g forward where would he come in this list? I’m guessing 2 or 3?
France and Argentina do not play open and blindside. They play left and right exclusively.
PTSD🇿🇦💯🔥
Do you think Jodie Barrett sees psdt in his nightmares?
It’s funny that French players have consistently topped these rankings yet their performances on the pitch don’t seem to correlate. I can’t help but think that they are collectively quite overrated. DuPont is constantly touted as the goat despite only winning one six nations, never getting past a World Cup quarters and never winning a test in the southern hemisphere. The counter argument is that he can’t be judged for the quality of his team but then his team mates are also ranked incredibly highly on rankings like this. Is DuPont overrated or are the French players generally?
Don't see lots of french on the list.
I think french individuals play well but national team is way beneath sum of the parts.
@@knoll9812 Look at the lists so far. A French player is consistently near the top.
Where is Ned Hanigan?
Negri is some player, id probably place him a bit higher than that.
@@aManAgainstTime Being a stand out success against the AB's playing in NZ is a good hint that the guy is top quality and worth his spot in a top 10.
@Hiltok yes. I don't doubt that he's a good prospect but to put him so high up the list after a couple full matches feels very premature.
@Hiltok if he was 10 or 9 I wouldn't have thought twice. Maybe I'm splitting hair, just seems a bit high.
Baird, CuningSouth, Negri and even O’Mahoney all better than Ritchie currently.
POM contributed absolutely nothing for munster when they were dished by Glasgow in the URC knock out rounds. Ritchie has been excellent this season in a poor Edinburgh side.
@@knarf3076 race to the bottom in both cases
Dutoit is openside ??
South African opensides wear 6 and the Blindside flankers wear 7.
Jamie Richie lol
Wouldn't have Ollivon that high think hes a bit meh
I'd love to know where you had Duane Vermeulen in the 8 pecking order before he retired..... He should have been world player of the year in 2019.
O'Mahony isn't even the best 6 in Munster, much less top 10 in the world.
Baird doesn't yet deserve his place on the list either, but hopefully he'll get there
No kiwis 😵
Indeed. No Shannon Frizell.
@@EggchasersRugby I'm shocked to find any player list without at least one Kiwi in the top 10.
International Rugby is the most competitive ever and I love it.
As a Scot I think Ritchie is overrated -Christie and even Bradbury are better options for 6 -hard to argue against 1&2
lad*
Baird is a better individual player. Mahoney drives the team
A good list I agree with them all bar Cunningham-south there 2 Welsh players ahead if him
who?
No just no let's not entertain such nonsense
You're absolutely dreaming 😂
If you play rugby and have "Du" in your name.... great things can be achieved 😂
How many games has Chandler had for England....way too high up
Every match since the rugby world cup. 6 Nations and the July Tests.
@@EggchasersRugby Tim, CCS is worth his spot in the top 10 just on the two tests against the AB's. He showed there that he's the business. (Although he did get smashed and turned over the pill when Ben Earl tossed him one of his slow, high passes.)
@EggchasersRugby so that few games and he is No6 in the world?????
He is incredible at Club level… So hard to stop!
Ollivon has been far from his best for a while now
François Cros, robbed as always
Not a great metaphor at the start, makes it seem like the blindsides are all rubbish
You can't have a single video where there is not at least one comment about how Dupont is overrated because he hasn't won a world cup. SH fans are so insecure it's funny.
He's also a bit slow.
@@3noLiVenothing you can do about that
You can tell SA have the top three dozen playing the world and they would go after the non da overrated player at 47.
To be fair he smashed cheek bone and removed from world cup.
Would have made an excellent world cup even better.
He sidesteps guys all the time.
@knoll9812 bro am talking about south hemisphere. why do you say he is the best? We played france twice before world cup though we lost by 3 point he was fully fit with no excuse of injury but not visible. When I talk about kolbe, and arense they do it on world cup twice world cup they played crucial part that defined losing and winning that is a play you can put in that brackets and kolbe he is also doing it in club rugby.
PST is overrated...
Kano > PSTD
YOU MUST BE A NZ😂
Hahaaaaa! Not even remotely close. PSDT is leagues ahead.
