It's true. It's all about to figure out how to play this "4 to 3" rhythm. If you did, it's only a matter of practice to speed it up. This piece is really not that hard to play with only one hand at high speed. The rhythm is the thing that makes this piece as difficult as it actually is.

YES, leaving the joke aside, playing at half tempo makes you realize so many bad habits. I used to just touch notes when they were 32ths or 63ths in relatively fast pieces and only realized this was the case when I started to practice them at half or 2/3rd of the speed. It also helps get specific chord progressions in mind and muscle memory better

I had always heard it played fast, but didn’t appreciate the beauty of this magnificent piece until I heard my dad play it slow. He practiced his technique to this. Dr. Hall - your videos have been extremely helpful and fun to watch. I've been playing less than 2 years and have no business learning a piece this complex so soon, but I honestly couldn't help myself. I've finally learned how to play up to measure 40 after a lot of heard work over the last few months. My extremely patient teacher and your polyrhythm video made it possible. I am still trying to work up to the "SUPER SLOW" speed you are playing here and still find myself having to say the polyrhythm out loud (T RL R LR) during certain parts. Also I might change up some of the fingering after watching this. I've followed the sheet music fingering suggestions where it is noted but there are a few spots where I'm using 4 where you are using 5 in the right hand. Thank you again for making these videos! You are an amazing player and teacher. Love the Steinway too!!

Now, I'm a senior in high school that's gonna major in music composition, and I'm learning this piece for my last recital in my hometown. It's challenging to play, but I am at the level to play it now. I'm an example of someone who didn't believe in herself but ended up doing it! If I can, you can too.

After playing for 31 years, I finally comprehend the timing of this song now that I see it played
slowly. The trick is to understand that the triplets (or, rather sixtuplets ?) on the left hand for the second and third measures are timed differently than throughout much of the rest of the piece. For example, the sixtuplets on measure four begin a change of pace quite differently from the beginning as the first, fourth, and seventh notes of the left hand in each measure garner slightly more value than the second, third, fifth, 6th, 8th and 9th notes of each measure. To put it short, MIND BLOWN!
    Thank you!!

    • @simple7628
      @simple7628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There is no such thing as “wrong fingering”.
There is stupid fingering (eg playing only using finger 1) but technically that is not “wrong”.
What some people call “right fingering” is just more efficient and natural fingering for the person playing.
Any fingering of your choosing is fine as long as you are comfortable with it and you can play whatever piece clearly, with dynamics and at the desired tempo.

Thanks a lot for making this recording.
My father used to play this piece, so I know more or less every note in it, but my own ability to play the piano is very limited. I have a dream though to one day be able to play this piece.
    A tip for everyone:
In case you did not think of it yourself, with TH-cam's settings you can change the speed and still have good sound, except if you select 0.25 of the original speed (in which case the sound is turned off). So if you take it down to 0.5 you basically have the piece at a 4th of the normal speed, really useful for checking and following all the notes. If you take it up to 2 times the original it sounds more or less as it is usually played.
This is the best "tutorial" I have found on TH-cam for this one.

To be honest it sounds like Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement because it has the same idea.
A dramatic start, and then the beautiful melody after that, and then repetition of the first melody, and then slowly transcending into a slow and beautiful middle section. And after that, the piece comes back to the 1st melody and ends with a little bit of twist in the end to make it more dramatic.

If I may make a request, I'm by no means a skilled pianist so I'm not sure if it's appropriate for this series, but I've always had trouble grasping the mechanics behind the transitional section in Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, particularly the repeated C#s in the right hand spanning two full octaves. Perhaps it's simply a matter of me overthinking it!

Also I'm dumb as shit when it comes to music theory LOL. Like, sure, I know it's not supposed to fall together, both RH and LH, but I'm just talking specifically about the LH. The LH iirc is a group of 6. Doesn't matter if it's a group of 5 or 7 - should be played evenly within a beat.

Low key though, this is actually harder than full speed. Having to play those 3 against 4 rhythms with proper articulation must be a pain in the butt. My piano teacher told me when she plays this piece she pretty much just makes sure that the notes in the left and right hand that are supposed to line up are lined up, and let everything else fall in between. Girl has a Doctorate in piano performance and she's saying this. Not that she couldn't play it properly, but I guess everyone wants to be lazy with some things.
