  • Dylan Moran on a Norwegian chat show, 14.10.2005.
    In the intro the host says something like: Next up is Irish, Dylan Moran, one of Europes hottest comedians at the moment. He's also appeared in television series and movies such as Notting Hill. He is in Norway to do shows in Oslo and Bergen this weekend. Here is a clip of Dylan Moran on the stage.
    He is appearing together with the current Norwegian Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance and the Minister for Local Government and Regional Development.
    Sorry about the choppy sound between minutes 6 and 7 - but what she said is so ridiculous that it's probably for the best..
    Clip belongs to NRK - No copyright infringement intended

    I've never seen him more comfortable in any of his other interviews. The man breathes irony. "Too dry here"... they didn't even know what hit em!

    I'm not saying Dylan is an 'act', but its a real joy to see him never breaking character; ie. staying in the 'bit' even in the absence of laughs. You never hear him saying "That was a joke", for example.

    Oh my god Dylan was so quick and surreal in this one, it's both painful and hilarious to watch the host - along with everyone else - trying to get a hold of him. A bit like this whole thing was a show, something like the Office.

    I simply love his weird interviews and how awkward his excellent sense of humour makes other people (like a few boring politicians). They don't know what to say or how to react! Most of the time his brilliant comments don't get appreciated. Love him!

    Didn't you notice people laughing? :)
    No, we get it; we love Irish and English humor. Norwegian humor is in fact itself not that different; they're all rather dark. But the people you see here talking with Dylan are all doing it in their third language, and as such it complicates the flow and the dynamic of the subtleties. These things forces their reaction and comeback to be slow and conservative.
    Having said that, though, Dylan wiped the floor with them. Loved it. :)

    I feel so bad for Dylan Moran - he really can't break out of Great Britain or Ireland. The rest of Europe didn't really work, US didn't work - but it seems ironically he did find a home for himself in Canada. It really sucks he can't just be universally relatable. I reckon his humour is really literate so obviously non native English speakers and the US can't get into that.
    God I hope he's doing well.

    • @fearlesssockpuppet
      @fearlesssockpuppet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Ron Voldman Why is it "ironic" that Dylan Moran is a success in Canada? Our sense of humour is in some ways closer to British humour than American humour. We're drier and less punchline heavy than American comedy.

    • @fashionofthechrist
      @fashionofthechrist 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fearlesssockpuppet If you say so. I'm Canadian too, and I've yet to understand the colours of our culture. I agree that Canada is very much a meeting of American and British cultures, so we might be a perfect hybrid of that.

    • @tomwithey711

    In his show the next day Dylan talked abit about this show. I'm paraphrasing: " How does a politician become successful. You recently got your new guy Jens. I beat him up after that show. It got very ugly. There was an armwrestling match and an oyster bar. But he seemed essentially decent to me. He's got a tattoo of a geisha eating a kebab on his thigh."

    • @tomwithey711
      @tomwithey711 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's patronising only because Americans are the only people I've ever met who will insist on not understanding you, if you have even a vague accent. I know chinese, French and German non-native English speakers who are fine with this. Dylan Moran has a very mild accent, for comparison, go listen to Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein MP, or for a southern accent, Dara o'Briain.

    • @sealbones
      @sealbones 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, thanks, I have in fact heard both speak before. You're right, their accents are stronger than Dylan's (though Dara Ó Briain not _so_ much). The point is not that he has a particularly strong accent relative to other Irish people, it's that he has an accent which deviates quite markedly from SSBE or GenAm, which is what most second-language speakers will have been exposed to.
      You know non-native English speakers who don't struggle with regional accents - so do I. I also know plenty who do.

    "I hope I am" gets the best reaction from the audience. And the look on Dylan's face seems to say 'surely I can get better laugh than that?'. He's unlucky; I'm not saying that Norwegians are unfunny but they don't seem to get his humour in this instance. The amount of times he says 'em' after a joke falls flat is a shame because he's a comic genius. Ah well Dylan, we were laughing.

  • @Aramiak
    @Aramiak 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    That was just awesome, what made it funny was that it obviously wasn't a comedy orientated show... and he didn't care. He was there for laughs, and he won 'em from those who mattered... the audience. It was priceless seeing the awquard looks from the politicians and show host as well! Love Dylan!!

    Wow. Respect Moran for handling that one.
    Norwegians have a very different sense of humour it seems, and a very different way of interviewing people. The host seems to be trying to get Dylan to make jokes about Norway and Ireland, while also deflecting serious questions from the politicians. It also has a weird sort of intervention flavour to it. I mean, who says to a guest on their show 'Have you ever considered giving up smoking?' that's like something the doctor says! Madness...

  • @harryfemten
    @harryfemten 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    We use a different geographical naming system in Norway.
    For example, England for the entire British Isles.
    Scotland is Northern England,
    Wales is Western England,
    Cornwall is South-Western England,
    Ireland is Trans-Irish Sea England.
    This makes it a lot easier, we only have to say England when you people have to remember alot of complicated geographical names.

  • @iSometimesWriteMusic
    @iSometimesWriteMusic 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    The interviewer is very clumsy, which makes Dylan look even more brilliant. I like his prejudices about Norway as a country with 0 problems, that's kind of how us Swedes think as well (even though we too live in a rather privileged country). There's kind of swedish joke about Norwegians saying something unfortunate, like "my mom died yesterday." That sentence would with the melody of the Norwegian language sound to us as if it was a very delightful experience (:
