Wonderful! Callas never lost her voice....the long period when she did not perform took its toll during the first concerts but while the tour went on she recovered most of her assets and if she had persisted ....well a bunch of opera singers could not have made the silly comments about her decline etc. etc. etc. even in her "decline" she was better then all of them put together....

This. Thank you for speaking the truth. Just watch out for people like "Shahrdad" who will continue to insist her voice was "Destroyed" and "lost" by the 60's. Such idiocy must be stamped out and destroyed.

Unfortunately for this wonderful lady, even she admitted it to her close friend Pippo Di Stefani who said in interviews that she cried over the decline of her voice. Maybe he should not have revealed this in interviews, but he did. They traveled together extensively. This is common knowledge

I would agree she never lost her voice, but aging and damage from taking on too much had its toll. Her top notes were never beautiful, like Sutherland's, but she hit them and they were exciting. He voice had other qualities to enchant us, but sheer beauty was never one of them. IMO.

This is one more proof Callas never really lost her voice ! Maria could have done so much more, had she continued to work on her voice, recording for instance. And Pammy you are right, that audience was Lucky, as we were all who saw her worldtour, Maria was still great !

FANTASTICA!!!! In full command without that wobble that plagued her later in life. This is historical evidence that she reignited the voice to the levels she demanded of herself.
    THANK YOU FOR THIS TREASURE!!!

MrQbenDanny Incredibly stable for this stage. But I cry everytime I hear any of the farewell tapes.. Because of the stories that I know that happened because of Onassis.. Abuse, abortions, etc.. She was like a skeleton at this point - all life stripped away from her.. She sings here not for enjoyment (it depressed her that her voice was like this) but to try and find someone who loves her, the public... trying to find support.. So sad...

thank you - this is terrific - never realized she had sounded that good towards the end.
I had the privilege of seeing her in Montreal on this last tour. The voice wasn't as strong - but who cared.
She did the Santuzza - Turrido duet and when she heard Lola off stage(the piano) I have never witnessed and actress listening to her rival as she did. She was riveted by that off stage voice and you were riveted to her standing there doing nothing but listening. Likewise she did the Habanera from Carmen and in the introduction she walked back and forth like a Panther - never seen anything like it. Never will.

to paraphrase Callas "one isn't what one was 20 years ago" Too true...Her 'technical quality' may have dropped slightly, but the interpretative and emotive qualities just kept getting better. For me, nobody has had such emotion and colour as her. Brava~!

What an artist Callas was! She was getting her voice and confidence back but I think it was soon after this performances that the love of her life died and nothing not even her art was strong enough to help her overcome this

It's worth pointing out that this performance comes almost exactly 34 years after her professional debut in Greece (at age 16). The period from the late 30s to 1947 is often overlooked in the trajectory of her career because we have no recordings from that period. Few singers have careers stretching over three decades; fewer still reach the heights she attained between her first and last performances.

It's amazing how much of her voice she got back as that tour went on. Compared to the start - it's an incredible journey.

This was the last leg of the tour with di Stefano that began in October, 1973 and found Callas sounding horrendous. But by this much later point (a year later), the voice sounds considerably stronger, firmer, and more confident. She takes the very demanding aria at a pretty fast clip, which spares her the problem of spending too much time on the higher notes. While the voice is still not what it was in 1958, she was making progress to the point where she could deliver an aria with the old Callas authority. The Callas voice remains a mystery. Did she lose it because of misuse and overuse during her prime years? Or did her vocal apparatus simply stop working because she stopped singing completely from 1965 to 1973?? It sounds here like she had begun to rescue a good portion of her voice. Why didn't she continue?? The great lady was probably petrified due to a loss of confidence as well as for other psychological reasons. She was Maria trying to recapture the full splendor of La Callas, the greatest of operatic artists.

She continued singing privately until her death and started getting confident again. She was destined to do Charlotte from Werther in November of 1977 (She obviously passed-away in September). Here is the link to her last known recording, made in August 1977: th-cam.com/video/CmrfQJTlzoc/w-d-xo.html

I've said this before on YT, but I feel that her foundational issue was a problem with her support. When she sang full time, things worked but in the 60s when she sang intermittently, the problem became more pronounced. She had developed other ways to support her voice which functioned somewhat, however after her 8 year break from singing in public, the old constrictions wouldn't work any longer. Robert Sutherland was aware of this and gave her breathing and support exercises which clearly helped. Between his help and just singing again, the improvement in her voice is obvious, as evidenced here!

I think the reality of Callas' life following the end of her operatic career was complex. On the one hand, she had not only reached the pinnacle of her profession, she created a new unprecedented pinnacle. At a certain point she lost the will to go on, that is, to continue the hard work necessary to keep performing. Vocalizing is an arduous, painstaking, and time-consuming process, and I can understand if she lost the will to continue. At one point Callas said "I lost my audacity." She certainly had audacity! She did things musically, vocally and dramatically that no one else did (or does). She didn't just sing the great roles, she presented them in a new light. As for the voice itself, I read that Callas sometimes referred to her voice in the third person, as in "she was answering that night" (while listening to a pirated recording with friends). Callas will always be a legend. People will discuss and argue about her vocal technique, whether (and when) she "lost her voice," etc., for eternity. When people say she "lost her voice" following the weight loss, all I can say is there are countless singers who would love to lose their voice the way she did.

Her voice was really in much better shape, perhaps the best I've heard from her since her best recordings and live performances in 1964. She seems to have been on the cusp of achieving the kind of vocal realibility that would allow her to have a professional career again with real excellence, even at her age. What a pity it is to think of what could have happened if she had a better mental and physical health as well as a better family support... So sad!

Berlioz would have especially suited her and it is a tragedy that she didn't sing more of his music. I wish she had done Cassandre in the 1950s or early 1960s.

If she can do like Domingo to take some (Baritone)Mezzo-soprano role which the repertoire she did in her youth like Norma, Turandot, Medea......that would be very very interesting. But sadly ~
