  • Custom-made, bespoke, carbon fiber cycling shoes are being used more and more by pro cyclists looking to perfect their pedalling technique, efficiency and power output. But these gains don’t come cheap, costing up to $3000 per pair! Ollie went to London to meet biomechanical podiatrist and creator of these shoes, Mick Habgood, to find out what they’re all about.

I can't wait for the update for two main reasons: (1) How was the adaptation - how long does Ollie think it took him; and (2) Has Ollie become painful in other areas (eg, inner thigh, etc) due to the orthotics correcting his tracking / ride posture (as different muscles adapt to the new tracking/body movement positions)? And consequently, how long did it take for that pain to subside (as those muscles adapt and get used to the new position)?

I had orthotics made by this chap. After a short adjustment period, my shoes no longer rub against the cranks and my knees track straighter. My feet are particularly pronated, so the shoes are pretty tight with the orthotics, but I’m very happy overall.

I've been using Ice Hockey moulded insoles, since my first pair of clip-on's. Just heat them in an oven, install them in your bike shoes, and let them mold to your feet. Affordable and it works!

I had a lot of trouble with foot pain, especially on the outside edge of both feet. I would get terrible cramps.
I know I have quite flat feet, so I applied the same thing I do to walking and running shoes and supported my arches better.
I also had to get a shoe that fit my foot well.
It was all quite expensive, but totally worth it. I went from riding 30 miles at a time to doing my first century in a few months.

I’ve used orthotic inserts for about 5 years. They’re pricey up front, about £400 for two pairs - one full length pair for my cycling shoes and a half pair for my daily shoes. I’ve been very pleased with them.

I have "SuperFeet" insoles in my walking boots and they help with the miles for sure. AND they are only about £40. Wonder if these would be ok on the bike too. They certainly have plenty of arch support built in and you can get them in Carbon too :) Interesting video though

It has been shown that supporting the arch in your food with shoes actually contributes to the breakdown of the arch. Its like taking a nutrient and your body stops making that nutrient.
So the come away is supporting your arch will contribute to the breakdown of your arch. No big deal? Lot bigger than you would think. Anywho good stuff, and that's no reason to not keepemcoming.

Given that the videos are made in the UK, with UK presenters, it seems reasonable to assume they might focus on a business based in the UK.
However, the guy running it sounds like he’s Australian. Stefan Bisseger (whose shoes were featured) is Swiss. And a number of other World Tour pros seem to be using either the shoes or just the orthotics.
So to answer your question, ‘Who (is) willing to spend?’, quite a lot of people.

The most expensive cycling shoes I've ever bought retailed at over $400.....But I got them from my team's shop, below cost, after they sat on the shelf for over two years. Good things come to those who wait.

@@gcntech Yes, worth every penny. I've had shoes start to fall apart after 5 years. These still feel like new after over a decade.
