Now, if you're like me, you know the importance of prepping your walls before painting or wallpapering. And that's where Gardz comes in. This stuff is like magic in a can! It seals in any leftover wallpaper adhesive, which means you won't have any bubbling or peeling paint down the line. Plus, it helps create a smooth surface for painting, which means less sanding and a more professional finish. And let me tell you, as a professional painter, Gardz is a game-changer when it comes to prepping walls.
But let's not forget about Peelstop. This is another great product for prepping walls, but it's a bit different than Gardz. For one, you can use Peelstop both inside and outside your home, which makes it a versatile product to have on hand. Plus, it's more of a bonding primer, which means it helps the paint adhere better to the surface.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "But what about PVA? Can't I use that as a wall sealer?" Well, here's the thing - a lot of people who don't know about PVA seem to think they can use it as a wall sealer for painting or wallpapering. But the truth is, PVA is not alkali resistant, which means it can cause problems down the line. Trust me, I've seen it happen. That's why I always recommend using Gardz or Peelstop instead.

Always in my van a tin of both, simply marvellous also always use peel stop in cracks previous filler and boom 💥
Good advice Phil thank you. Had an issue like that here where there was a couple of layers of paper up possibly over lining. Decorators said no chance, the walls will need lining to get a good finish or a skim, possibly get away with a Mirka. I took what I could off dry and used hot soapy water for the rest then gave the walls a clean down and a coat of acrylic primer followed by fine surface filler, more primer, another fill (bits I missed), sanding in between, and a final coat of primer to seal the filled areas. At the moment the walls look like freshly painted white emulsion but the plan is to coat up the ceiling then then add some colour to the walls. I know this will highlight some imperfections that’s weren’t visible before but I’m happy with the overall finish considering I’m no pro and have saved a couple of grand. The rollered primer has added texture to hide some of the more heavily sanded areas and hopefully the top coats will add more. I wish I knew about Gardz earlier but so far touch wood there are no areas of peeling or flaking despite the lightly artexed ceiling and the coving being a silk finish 😬 which got a couple of coats of primer as well as I’m not sanding artex. Looking forward to getting it all finished eventually and couldn’t have done it without your help and advice 👍

Hi Phil, I've been using 123 to seal my walls after stripping. I even use it watered down to seal the walls before papering, it give you a good slide and ive had great results with it.
Hi Mark, I'm not sure it was really designed for that application.

Both great products Phil. Always have them in my van for whenever they're needed. Both are underused and under estimated in my opinion.

I prefer Peel Stop, it's a fantastic primer sealer. A coat of Gardz is great after stripping wallpaper or for damaged plasterboard.
Hi Phil, loved the video. Got a 1970s house and just stripped wallpaper off our hall and landing ended up with similar mapped paint in quite a few places. Going to give it all a good sand down then cover with gardz, but after im guessing I'll still have some slight edges, what would you suggest as next steps?
If you have the mapping... Go with PeelStop.
Skim out with filler the beat you can, sand. See what it locks like .
Great video zinsser are a great product.
Some of their products are good but conversely some aren't ..wouldn't use 123 as a stain killer as it doesn't deal with stains...is ok as a primer but thats about it..

Hi Phil, thanks for doing all of these educational videos. They've helped me out so much and this video in particular has came out just in time where I need it the most 😂 ... Basically I have sanded back all of the walls and they have left pitted marks like what you have shown on this video. However, whoever plastered the walls looks like they learned from stevie wonder and arent the most flat 😂 My options are to to either just fill up the pitted holes, or go over the whole wall with a skim coat of toupret skim and fill. I would also cover the whole wall with gardz once dry. Do you have any advice/ recommendations?
You're correct. But if it's a load of filling and sanding.... Lining the walls would help.
Hi Phil. Since your the expert 😅 How do i go about painting my two spare wheelie bins. I need them for a camping festival in the summer. Those trolleys always break. Im going to lock them with a tie wrap, so rubbish is not thrown in them. We are going to chain them together so they are not rolled away.

Hi Phil, I have some 1960s walls. Stripped many layers of wallpaper off. It has left some old glue. When I tried to wash it off it just turns to a gummy mess. It also just clogs my sandpaper. Can I just let it dry then guardz over it all? I am then going to wallrock insulation outside walls and wallrock fibreliner inside walls.
So is it ok to apply guardz over old wallpaper glue?

Hi yes.
You could always try washing a bit more paste off with hot soapy water again. Allow to dry. Then Gardz it.
If you have cracks that need filling/sanding, you can do that before or after the Gardz
If after, it's good practice that you spot prime the dry filler with the Gardz once it's dry.
You don't need to size the wall once the Gardz is on. As the Gardz is acting as the wall size.
Just come across this video and now Im in 2 minds on how to proceed. In the room I'm decorating old owners didn't mist coat and painted walls with paint but it bubbled etc. We didn't tackle it at the time so lining papered it. Re doing said room and I've stripped 3 walls back to plaster, skimmed with filler and used peel stop on some edges of paint we couldn't shift. The 4th wall would not come off so I've sanded and used peel stop on the peeling paint but not sure how to proceed.
Do I paint the whole room with gardz then emulsion or do I mist coat, then use zinsser 123 then emulsion

Now just lightly sand over the walls and coat them with Gardz. You watched my Video,
That will give you a good surface to paint over. or line.

I'm looking to invest in a dustless sanding system and been looking at Mirka as you seem to rate it. I'm wondering what would be most useful mirka as they are expensive. It would be mainly for sanding down walls and ceilings prior to painting. That 'wand' type one you have seems to be the business!🙂
The Mirka Laros is the one that's ideal for walls and ceilings... It's expensive. But weights less than cheap alternatives and the time saved will pay for itself.

Hi Phil, I've stripped woodchip off an old ceiling that also has a lot of cracks with what also looks some sort of paint peeling off. Should I use peel and stop and then finish with a coat of gardz?
If there's not much peeling.. sand over so any loose stuff come off, dust it over and. Just coat the whole lot with Gardz.
Fill anything one that's dry.. the filler I'll go on well to the Gardz.
After you sand the filler. You can Gardz the bare bits or spot prime with some thinned down emulsion if you're painting it.

Ive got a job coming up where it looks like the walls have been touched up with silk, yes silk paint 😱 what would you suggest putting over the silk to enable me to use emulsion? Or should i just sand it back? Thanks in advance Laura

You might want to consider either Gardz over the previously painted walls (as it may be cheap contract emulsion) or use Peelstop if you have peeling edges.

Just got some gardz to got over stripped wallpaper. If I apply gardz should I sand it before applying emulsion?
Strip the walls, clean them down. Rake out and fill, sand over and Gardz it all.
If you see anymore filling, do that, sand and touch over the filler with Gardz as spot priming.
Can I use guardz to seal a plaster wall that's had minor damp from external issue which is now fixed,,only as I need to paint the wall and don't want wet stains coning through or any excess damp in wall make the paint bubble ect..missis has had enough waiting 😅😊

I have a problem with an air bubble, the plasterer has gone over some torn paper on the plasterboard. What's the best way to tackle it ?
Can they be cut back, PeelStop. Then filled over?
Or are they just enough to sand out?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator so I cut out the bubble, removed the mushed loose paper backing so it was all neat. I used some Zinsser Guardz on the raw plaster which should toughen it up. I'll use some Toupret filler to go over it.
I have one small section of the bathroom wall that the sheet rock paper is stripped off of and I plan to put guards over it for ceiling. The rest of the wall has been scraped and sanded between various coats of peeling paint and I would like to usePel stop for that. My question is is it OK to put the peel stop over the section with guards?

hi, you only need to use Peelstop on that then, it will work fine.

Freshly plastered wall,waited about a week,mist coated then emulsioned.paint now peeling when applying/removing masking tape to paint skirtings.would you recomend gards or peelstop?

It's not ideal to apply a wash coat with hvlp.
Are you applying masking to the walls to spray the woodwork?
@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator the erbauer eps800,not using the hvlp for skirting,decided to use brush/roller but that is when i masked the wall.after the paint peeled on couple walls i just used straight edge on piece of metal to protect wall

That a silicone based paint, which can go on K render?
Best just check the Data sheet for it.
If bare render/brick in good condition and you were using normal masonry... You thin down the first coat to soak in.

you only need to stabilise old, friable, powdery surfaces.. no need to use it on sound surfaces.

Yes. It makes it's easy to fill over.
Just found your video and now I'm panicking I've done it wrong after hours and hours of work. I've fully scrubbed, filled and sanded a whole room that's had wallpaper and all sorts of weird green and yellow flaky paint, along with thick glue that was a nightmare to remove. The walls are patched all over and now lovely and smooth, but should I have sealed first and not after filling 😢 I've just bought the gardz, is that the right thing to use?
Clean it all down.... Gardz before you fill... It means the surface is nicer to fill over lol
Then spot prime the filler with Gardz after.
Or clean it down. Fill up. Sand. Gardz all of it at the same time.

Phil can I use peel stop internally instead of gaurds on a plastered surface... I've just sand back to plaster on a hall stairs and landing.... we are emulsioning later....?

Was it wallpapered before?
If so, stick with Gardz.
If not, you shouldn't need anything other than a thinned coat of emulsion on the bare walls, then do your filling and sanding... then spot prime the filler... and remember, thinner coats are better than one thick one.

I have two tins of zinnsers peelstop and thought I could use it in stead of the gaurds....
I'm just second guessing it really. It's my first time decorating... I just thought while I had the peel stop just role that on and use it as a prima....?

@@9P38lightning its only a plaster surface. . Not a problem surface. So no need to use PeelStop or Gardz if just bare plaster. Thin down your emulsion for a wash coat first.

Painted a bathroom ceiling with Permawhite mold resistant paint, but right above the shower, the constant steam has made the paint on the ceiling flake away (artex ceiling) but paint twice, would Peelstop be the answer to fix the issue long term?
yes, that should be your next cause of action, make sure its all dry.. use the peelstop, aone coat will be fine.. a 2nd coat may be used to make sure you haven't missed anywhere though lol

@petra the rest of the ceiling is fine, it is just a small 20 cm radius where all the steam and moisture is at its worst, I'm hoping and thinking Peelstop in the affected area, once it has been rubbed back, removed flaking paint, should be all good then, currently using Permawhite on the ceiling.
Is it a water sealer ? I had a leaking gutter and that resulted in the internal wall near the gutter area the paint has bubbled and covered a picture I had on that wall which I found it was covered in flacky mould at the back of the picture. Rain water has obviously been getting into the wall because of the guttering. I've been looking at the Zinner products but don't know which to use? Ideally I want a water sealer that stops my painted walls bubbling. Can you please advise me.

Also a product for new plastered wall too so that is protected too. So if you advise several products or ideally one product that will do all that would be great Phil please.

The emulsion paint bubbled and started to flake off due to the leaking guttering as my guttering is near my kitchen single storey as I live in a terraced house and the kitchen was added on apparently in the 70s. If I could send you a pic so you could see what I mean it would be better than me trying to explain it to you. My worry is I don't want water coming in once I've paid for paint and finished decorating so did good advise to stop this from happening. Hope I've explained it to you clearly. Thanx Phil

@@ChrisLivingInYork if the cracks are fine hair line. You could PeelStop... Then line.
If they are bigger and needs opening out and filling... Do that. You can Gardz the whole lot as that will seal the filler nicely.. then line.

its says you can you use peel stop on plastic i tested on a plastic roller scuttle and it just feel to shit after it dried i do use the peel stop on denatured timber just cause its quick drying was reading some decs are using to harding rotted soft timber etc i can understand that cause it doesn't work for that i tried it cause i wanted it to work be cheaper than wood hardener. half the time i tell people your got salty walls some of them look at me as if im talking bollocks and trying to rip them of the other half tell me im talking bollocks and trying to rip them off.

The 2 most overused and misunderstood products. Scrape off all loose then there’s no need for peelstop. Clean the walls properly and there’s no need for gardz (although that’s not what it’s main use is for)
I used gardz over plastered walls in my bedroom and it was a nightmare to apply diy emulsion over it so I wouldn't recommend it for diy use
Probably should just give gardz a light sand over if you're going to emulsion over it. 👍
What was the problem you was having?
Im going to be sticking some gardz on a previously papered wall next week.
@@Lloyd1885It left a shiny surface and when I applied the paint it was sliding over the gardz and the paint could easily be wiped off. I also found it took loads of coats of paint to cover. You could try sanding like phill said but another decorator said they just painted over it but they used a trade paint which might have more grip.
I dont think gardz is as a good original alkali resisting primer and i dont think peel stop is as good as original stabilising solution especially for holding old paint edges peel stop is a convenient product for ease of use and quicker drying but not as good in the end
you're forgetting that Gardz is a breathable product on a surface, it's a Alkali Resisting too like ARP.. Gardz will not react with paste on a surface if going over a previously papered/stripped surface.
PeelStop is still very good outside. :)
What about isomat flex primer what one would that be like would that be good enough to use instead of Gardz would you know mate
@@craigpaulwilson8162 if you want something thats alkali resisting then just straight oil based alkali resisting primer is best that will be much more reliable than any water based alkali resisting primer with stabilising solution's on exteriors oil based stabiliser is best but for interiors doesn't really matter to much water based one will be fine but if your stain blocking use the oil based alkali resisting primer leave over night to dry as standard
